The story makes only a tad less sense than Fist of the north star's which was quite above standard in early mangas (excluding anything by Osamu Tezuka)

hokuto no ken was / is a series of fighting prowess including energy blastes, kinetic and velocity in pretty much all of their moves. exploding waters... how can you not see it when you consider all the kinetic (Ki) that was used to throw him ? its like asking gokus kamehameha to not explode on impact. it would just sucks.

that said i think fist of the north star is always going way too far for no reasons, but thats my opinion. as for the game, it looks great, i might consider it.
