basically yes it depends on the distance. Take into account you are at the distance of Sarah Connor. You are in "seeing distance" of the nuke, that is to say you can visibly see the bomb with the naked eye. At that distance, the instant flash of light would blind everyone instantly, followed by the immediate incinerating heat that you can see causing smoke, moments before the shock wave. This heat would progressively get hotter over the course of 7 or 8 seconds, turning everything into charcoal.

then the plus million degree shockwave would incinerate everything in it's path up to approx 100mile radius, depending on the size of the nuke of course. You can be blinded 1000km away from the nuke, is you are gazing straight at it.

The image of the main character and the children burning is inaccurate. In a nuclear blast wave, air actually ignites, and she would have been incinerated in an instant.

well, it depends on the distance from the detonation. If you are close enough you will be surely incinerated immediately, because the heat from the exploson is immense. But if you are far enough away not to vaporize immediately but still within the range of the bomb the heat is still enough to set everything flammable on fire befor the blastwave reaches you. (Look for "Nuclear Cannon" video, you will see what I mean) sorry for my bad english, I tried my best ^^
