man thats insane , wow !!!! youve nailed that one ,so stoked to hear something that sounds so spot on to the real stuff , well done keep the legend of "crazy horse" close at hand .top work
Great version! You nailed Neil's sound. If you want to get it even closer to the original, just add some reverb, and maybe use slightly heavier strings.
Dude, you've done a great thing. It's close enough to that Airport Terminal scene that I don't even need to check. You must've known it was Cortez when you first heard it. And if you're like me, it completed the movie.
I'm one of probably many disciples of the original studio version, the concert film video of "Rust Never Sleeps" (much better than the Live Rust album version), and a lot of the covers. But this is one that I haven't heard in any live footage of Neil.
dude in almost famous when they are walking out of the airport, its the song natural beauty from harvest moon, not cortez the killer, though they have the same chord progression
dude in almost famous when they are walking out of the airport, its the song natural beauty from harvest moon, not cortez the killer, though they have the same chord progressions
@LostSonofZion Thanks!! You're comment has made my day; I've been searching for the original and it led me from Cortez The Killer to this video and now to the original! :)
@LostSonofZion I'm 99,9% sure it's Cortez playing in almost famous. Natural beauty is actually quite different, although they're played in the same tuning.
Hey you are really good. Wasn't it stupid that Cortez the Killer got the MUSAK treatment in Almost Famous? They shouldn't have put yours in but you were asking too much. Do more and even if you can't sing ,, try to sing and it took Neil a while to kick Richie Furray off his songs..
holy sh*t i say f*ck it sing in a lower tune on a mic and it will still sound amazing.. with a bit of mic effects and your perfect guitar and harmon, it wont really matter if you cant hit the high notes ...
Realy like your strumming, this is fine guitar playing man! Poeple seem to think its very basic to play like this but to put the feel and strum the right way for it to be sweet and musical is a long time progress
i am rediculously impressed. i've searched high and low for the live acoustic + harmonica version of cortez and there's literally like, no trace of it. i nneeverr enjoy peoples covers on youtube and honestly, you rocked my world. thanks so much for this, you made my day. xo
The acoustic version hasn't been released by Neil up to this day. You can find it (Neil playing it live) on various torrent sites though.
Cameron Crowe tried to tease us, i. e. showing us how good he knows Neil, by putting the first 2 minutes of the song in his movie. Many people where disapointed not finding it on the soundtrack.
Just great, it sounds wonderful! I like playing guitar (acoustic) and playing on a harmonica and man, I just wish I could play Cortez The Killer like you do... How did you learn it? I would really like to learn it the same way you did, it was just great!
Hey man work on your voice if you're not comfortable with it, I want to hear the rest! Your guitar skills are there and that harp is hauntingly beautiful. I would say this intro is the best cover of Cortez on youtube.
What key is that harp and brand/model. I want to learn harp so I can play more of Neils songs.
I heard this cover over a year ago but just never thought to post. I have listened to it a lot since then. Again, thanks for the great piece of art. Lots of emotion in this intro!
if you look a little bit below I already asnwered ;) I'll repeat: the guitar has been tune in "double dropped D" or D-modal. Dropping both E strings to D.
You can play it in a number of variations, i personally use the standard E tuning dave matthews version but double d sounds much more authentic. The chords are a basic play on E minor, D, A minor. Really really simple, add your own spice to the chords and make it your own for a nice sound!
I swear if I close my eyes while listening I am hearing Neil Young play a live concert! This is brilliant! You have mastered that percussive downbeat Young uses.
