The one way I found that allowed my dog to never realize I had left, was sneaking out. They would be downstairs, and I would leave and when I came back (1-4 hours, even) and she would not have realized I left. But she has severe anxiety... To a point where she can hurt herself and I am still at a loss as to what to do... sometimes "sneaking out" does not work. And nothing I have found, works. Last resort: drugging her.
My beagle has bad separation anxiety even though we have another dog that he can play with when we are not here. We have found that giving him a Kong ball with peanut butter as well as a Pet Ease tablet helps ALOT.
