Having fought 3 people for my Dan I can tell you its not only not easy but if they're higher ranking students red/brown/black, not getting your head handed to you the first few minutes or seconds is almost impossible. It does get easier when you relax and use better timing but its also harder because you can't use truly disabling techniques like bone breaks. I'm grateful for the experience now that I'm in law enforcement I'm not afraid of hand to hand. I an a 3rd Dan now BTW.

Aikido is a softer version Judo or Jujitsu as Jujitsu is rougher version of both Judo and Aikido. As in those martial arts they got have good firm punch ,kick, grappling and throwing techniques amongst their students.Aikido is like judo but it doesn't have that grappling or close contact techniques, like judo it uses the attackers own force to throw them and breaking their balance.Judo is floor work [hold downs] and throwing techniques.

Apparently you people do not train in aikido...judging by the ignorance in your comments. Aikido is probably the most practical martial art there is. Take up aikido...you'll see.
yea the problem i have with aikido is it seems the end all be all defense is bringing ur hands back after ur strike which is pretty basic in any other style of martial arts.
Come at me like you mean it! And by that I mean, casually jog towards me with outstretched arms as if we were playing tag....
Everyone can toss three people around if they have no intention whatsoever of actually *doing anything* to you. Such coregraphed dance routines have nothing to do with actual fighting though.
@xFallenAngel The one thing you need to understand about how Aikido works is that you use the attackers energy against themself. If you come at an Aikido master 100mph with full intent, believe me you will be on your arse before you even knew what happened. Aikido is at its best and most effective when there is energy. The more energy you give to Nage, the more energy you will receive as Uke.
@ChuckerThe1 Those principles work nicely when there's only one charging enemy. It's a different story with three or four. When your attackers prance around like they do in the video, you've got ample time to redirect their incoming force one by one, because that's what it really is. 4 one-on-one's in quick succession instead of 1 real one-on-four. When all charge you in an honest coordinated effort, at the same time, you can deal with one, maybe two before the others will get to you.
it's well known that it's choreographed aikido demonstrations are because if the students don't go with the flip they could get hurt real bad. it's not like it's a secret.
@Expendable2010 The problems begin then when a video is presented in a way that suggests that choregraphed demonstrations accurately model reality. Which happens all too often.
true you have a point but at different points they come at him like they mean it and he reacts quickly. but aikido is most effective against untrained thugs attacking on the street it's purely defensive. in a fight with another talented martial artist this would do you no good but aikido is basically pure and simple self defense.
I love how in part one the facet of not passing your test the first time is a victory in itself because it teaches you to be better. A great teacher (I think Seagal is a great teacher through method) will attest. Look at Dan Seagal- He is not overly built, is not a roided up "specimen" he is just a master craftsman. I'd rather have a teacher like that than end up in a "contractual McDojo." His follow through with movement is top-notch.
@MITGAMESCOMPANY In addition, While I admit to the positive benefits of learning an art like aikido, I do believe that the "Martialness" of eastern martial arts has been diluted. If you want to devote your life to learning all the mysteries of Aikido then fine, enjoy. Just remember that real fighting is bloody, chaotic, ugly and quick and you would be wise not to confuse the two.
@MITGAMESCOMPANY Look bro, all martial arts, every single one of them were born of the need to protect oneself AND/OR do violence against another in a time of war. The spiritual aspects of the eastern martial arts came after.
ANY martial art wether it be Aikido or western boxing takes a tremendous amount of training to perfect and pursuing that perfection will only bring good things, discipline, dedication, etc. as well the physical benefits.
I love Steven for his movies and all he has achieved in his life but come on folks! If Chuck Liddell had to do that Randori there would be three cats laying on the floor spitting blood in less than 10 seconds. What do you think Mike Tyson would do to those kids? The truth is Mr. Seagall would never face a Chuck Liddell or Mike Tyson because he knows damn well what would happen...Aikido would be exposed...
@CheetaRevised The Rock says take your finger, shiiiine it up real nice, tuurn it sideways, AND STICK IT UP YOUR FUCKIN AYUSS!!! Shut the fuck up, you make no sense I make a statement and you come out of the blue talking about prison. The fuck you talkin about fatass.
it's not easy defending yourself against a group...the blackbelt candidates did quite well and showed their Art in a positive light. What I don't like about Aikido videos is the attackers never go this hard against the masters and what we see is nothing but choreographed theatre...I bet if the attackers went for Seagal as hard as they did for the students he wouldn't look so smooth.
The one thing you need to understand about how Aikido works is that you use the attackers energy against themself. If you come at an Aikido master 100mph with full intent, believe me you will be on your arse before you even knew what happened. Aikido is at its best and most effective when there is energy. The more energy you give to Nage, the more energy you will receive as Uke.
@ChuckerThe1 you must be kidding the only time someone will attack you 100 miles an hour like a robot is in an Aikido dojo...so really the only time Aikido will be effective is in a dojo
@alfreddegreat It seems likely that the main reason the students don't attack the masters so viciously is because of the fear of injury. In Aikido, the harder your opponent attacks, the worse they're likely to be hurt.
@alfreddegreat i don't think you realize that its not choreographed when they flip, there doing that because its a joint lock you either go with the momentum of the throw or get your arm busted off... i can see your point about the amount of aggression they use with him, as they could go much harder but i think they wanna keep there joints intact ...
@alfreddegreat It's a respect toward sensei because he is teaching at that moment. If the sensei wanted, he'd hurt the "attacker". Aikido in a dojo is never meant to hurt, but to teach and learn. Aikido in a life or death situation is a dangerous weapon. That's why is the way of harmony; because even if great aikidokas have such a power, their intentions are always peaceful. If not, every aikidoka would be a serial killer. That's what O'sensei thought.
@linknowmedia really, I did bjj in the army and what I know is the problem with your comment is bjj wouldn't get close enough. I have seen a ONE armed aikido practitioner more than hold his own against an mma fighter in asia. food for thought!
I like Steven Seagal and all and realize he was the first non Asian to ever have a dojo in Japan as well as the first non Asian to ever be given the title Shihan. But I have to admit it doesn't hurt to be a full foot taller than everyone else.
I'm not saying that Aikido is a worthless martial art. I'm saying that the techniques of Aikido need to be applied to an uncooperative opponent who is willing to at least throw full contact punches and attacks. This should be practiced regularly, which means that some protective equipment should be worn. Unless you're tired of your teeth and have a penchant for concussions.
How exactly are these people attacking the defender? Running at him with their hands out? That's an attack? No punch attempts, no kicking attempts, just run at the guy with your hands out. One on one, attack someone in any mma ring like that- but please wear a mouthpiece. I believe that the originator of this art had true skill, but somehow, it got watered down when they stopped using force on force training like muay thai, judo, sambo, boxing, san shou, dog brothers martial arts, mma,etc
when you learn and do aikido youn will understand that you have to be incontrol of whats going on and when your doing randori you need to be on your toes and they arnt acrobats they are martial artitsts as a yellow belt doing a randori is hard so you need to think all of the time but with who you learn maybe different but i get told every day i go is that peace and harminy is best when blending together.
@Ntre222 i would!!! and it would be a very short "fight". MMA has rules and the fighters train to compete within the confines of those rules. Mr. Segal won't duck a punch or wait for a chance to shoot for a take down. i love MMA but it is a sport.
Kempo styles aregood to learn strikes and good one against one fighting skills. Hand to hand is only used if a weapon cannot be applied in real life. Multiple attacks are a quick succession from one on one attacks and defenses, with some defense by position. some good positioning training from aikido is ideal to help with your distance to launch strikes from. Learn to fall. Weapons are essential eventually. Good strength training and endurance as well. Train harder than they do!
The concept of the school, the test, the technique, all the comments, all part ofthe truth. What really I see is learning positions, how to move between opponents, the techniques applications are all relevant. The faster, the stronger, the more easy to make technique work. train hard my friends!
everyones entitled to their opinions, but really when will you ever be rushed by three people who are trained in aikido??? The Idea of the Randori is to practically implicate the moves and techniques you have learned and do it under pressure. And those of you who think Aikido is fake or people just doing flips I only hope you never have to find out the hard way just how affective it is. All martial arts can be dangerous and effective, it only depends on the practitioner as to to how effective!
@sublimenija MMA has a refere and pads and gloves and someone to stop it if it gets out of control, also a financial gaine. I have never known a street fight have these. MMa fighters are fighting for a prize - not there life. This video demonstrates one effective approach of self preservation. I find MMA a circus act and pointless.
First 3 guys comming @ you the first thing you do I take 1 of them out 1 shot to the throut or break an arm 1 less person or kill 1 in a second that is real.Your not going to give a shot to the throut or break some arm 1 or kill some 1 in a second your fellow students and friend thats real
the guy taking the test didn't last long . What would seagal do to control those guys I thought the student would do the same thing. I wouldn't have done any better maybe a tiny bit or maybe just skip class and go to the beach and watch all the small little Bikini's walk on by with my drink .Better than getting rushed by 3 students pilein on top of me
really anyone who thinks aikido is fake go up to a aikido teacher in your area and try to fight him and see how real or fake it is for your self. my aikido teacher once told me to really try to hurt him, so did I tried karate on him, he blocked every punch and had me on my ass. then i tried to switch it up and tried some wing chun on him, only to be blocked and thrown. I literally tried everything i knew on him.
@Coyotespirit4 ok by the way I've been in many STREET fights, and trough that I have gained the knowledge that (least in MY experience) in 90% of fight's people try to grab you or run at you and those are times when aikido is very effective. but I would suggest taking a style that has more striking like karate wing chun or something of that nature (Chinese styles like hung gar go well together with aikido) to accent your aikido so that when attacked by a striker you are ready for it
@Coyotespirit4 Who thought Akido was fake bro? Shame on them. Intresting you used soem Wing Chun. I train WC and think its great. How long you trained Wing dude.
@zark212 I've been doing wing chun for about 6 or 7 years now.Yeah its great but i do admit it can leave you unguarded in some areas aikido taught me correct stance. In wing chun u usually assume a face 2 face stance but that leaves your growing open for attack.Put one leg back kinda like a karate stance.I think everyone should take as many styles as they can, and find the ones thats are similar to eachother so you blend them well together into ur own effective.
Since I ran out of text I want to make the point that I'm no Steven Seagal fanboi as he is pretty much known to be a total asshole irl. You have to respect his ability though as he is a bad mofo that knows wtf he's doing.
Anyone who knows anything about martial arts knows this is not fake at all. As many people have already said if you don't go with the flow and twist your body with the pressure being applied then bones, ligaments, and tendons are going to break. It might look like an old school chinese kung-fu movie but there's a reason these guys look like they're "flying around." The outdoor training scenes are just that, training scenes, if 3 guys run at a guy like Steven Seagal they're gonna get hurt.
all martial arts are deadly! and to all those who comment on any art being effective or ineffective or this or that...please stop because you're embarrassing yourself and dishonoring your art if you're studying any art at all. Enjoy these demonstrations and open your mind, try to understand the principles, and the movements, absorb it you might fucking learn something new.
@mondain300 "and none is a bigger clown than one who cannot see willfully through the the veil his own mind has slipped upon him"....those aren't throws...they are breaks the students are rolling and flipping because that's what is called a "counter" for the breaks....if those poor saps did not flip as they do their fucking wrist elbow and arm would get broken you DUMB FUCK!!
To all who comment, a true martial artist do just art. This means he don't try to be, he just is. He won't fight you, he will make you understand you are only fighting against yourself. Those who know can't be displaced from their center. Those who know are those who indeed are. A true martial artist will understand any attack as a question challenging his conviction. When the enemy ask him Are you now? the master answers -Yes i'm now, i was then and i will be always,
@mondain300 Ok then why did Steven train Anderson Silva a UFC MMA champion aikido? The point of this isn't to throw people to the ground, it is to counter and if needed strike back or submit someone
@mondain300 If these people didn't "fly through the air" there'd be a lot of severely injured Aikidokans and that just wouldn't be good for the art's reputation--or maybe it would, who knows?--. What I do know is, that we all want to train pragmatic and realistic scenarios when we're training to fight, but the issue with that is, if we really did simulate these well enough, we'd spend too much time in a hospital bed and not in a gym.
@mondain300 If you think that you seriously need to go learn about martial arts. In fact, everything you said is retarded. Dont get me wrong, i think aikido sucks but those those tosses are not fake, if you dont toss yourself like that then you will break your arm, ask and aikido master to do those "fake" moves on you and see what happens if you dont flip...
@mondain300 Dude....this is Before the dans..after you are teach about Atemi or strikes to vital parts of the body WHILE doing this techniques Stfu you fat dweeb I know you are one ;D
@mondain300 actually they flip so they dont break their wrists. the holds and twists that they put other people in will break bones and joints etc if you dont fall correctly.
You're an idiot saulseanz79 obviously you don't have any martial arts background for you to say that . Or if you do you're a shame like those cocky people these days who wear tapout clothes and think they know how to fight . People like you will get ktfo in the streets
I've done Jujitsu for most of my life and you can practise all the moves you want but during free sparring, its always the biggest strongest guy who has the advantage. There's this guy in my class who's only a nidan but he's got the build of a heavyweight boxer. No one can take him down, not even senior dan grades.
@moritzkunow yeah! i took aikido for a year. and once i realized that, i just started lifting weights and taking dynabol. now i don't have to worry about safety cause everyone just assumes i can fight!! simple human psychology.
haha its funny how the guys just run at him with there arms straight out....this art is called zomb-kido....the art of fighting zombies in the apocalypse haha
Very interesting. The "randori" part of the black belt test looks like a very realistic test of fighting skill. But then when you see Seagal illustrate how to go about it, the attackers come at him with much less intensity. It'd be interesting to see him handle the same intensity attack.
And this is impossible to understand for someone who thinks a martial is about fighting and denfending urself hitting someone. It's more a life philosophy than a mere fighting theory.
... aikido is not teached to fight, but to control oneself. In real life avoiding the fight always means you are understanding what's aikido about. A well trained high grade, even if he knows he may be untouchable, has no fury inside nor vengeance thirst, because he is above the mere human animal instinct since he has reached the "gods" observation level.
Okay, I have read some comments and since I am a 3rd dan I need to explain a few things about these videos. What you see Sensei Seagal doing is a demo, nothing else. Those who attack him are a part of the demo and by respect they do not act like if it was a real test. Why? Simple, a sensei of this grade trying seriously to stop the 3 attacking people would simply hurt them seriously, if not kill them. That's why for a high grade real life fights are forbidden by law. And...
to all who comment, martial arts are not about fighting, its about self control through ones self and ones actions. If you think you are going to win a fight, then you loose.
If you expect to fight someone and beat them, your blind; if you call someone else bad and dont know their way, your ignorant; and if you think your better than someone else, your deceived.
"there are many paths to the top of the mountain, but they all reach the same peak."
@sadbutbenji I never understand that saying I can throw a knife about as far as you can shoot a bullet. guns are cumbersome oh yeah one more thing if I have a knife and you got a gun you are probably not gonna know I have a knife until it is to late. Never bring stupidity to a fight.
@SECMusic yeahhhhh right.... considering very good shooters put 5 rounds into 2 " at 1000 yards I think you should really go back to relaxing on the couch and watching re-runs of above the law....
@tatertruck124 I agree with you from a philosophical standpoint, but from a pragmatic, I couldn't more vehemently disagree. There's a reason the term "martial" is apart of "martial arts." It needs to be effective, but still an expression of one's self in the form of martial combat--traditional or not--.
@tatertruck124 The term martial arts itself refers to fighting. Of course martial arts are about fighting lmao. If you want self-discipline, you can visit a therapist. True, certain arts may make for a good outlet to release stress, make you humble, etc. but the first and foremost goal of martial arts is to fight AND win
if this was in mma there would be alot of broken arms and knees so yes i would not be effective in mma because mma is a spectator sport akkido is not a sport its pretty much kill shots and street fighting your not gonna palmstrike sombodys nose in the ring it can kill

Come at me like you mean it! And by that I mean, casually jog towards me with outstretched arms as if we were playing tag....
Everyone can toss three people around if they have no intention whatsoever of actually *doing anything* to you. Such coregraphed dance routines have nothing to do with actual fighting though.
xFallenAngel 11 months ago
@xFallenAngel The one thing you need to understand about how Aikido works is that you use the attackers energy against themself. If you come at an Aikido master 100mph with full intent, believe me you will be on your arse before you even knew what happened. Aikido is at its best and most effective when there is energy. The more energy you give to Nage, the more energy you will receive as Uke.
ChuckerThe1 10 months ago 2
@ChuckerThe1 Those principles work nicely when there's only one charging enemy. It's a different story with three or four. When your attackers prance around like they do in the video, you've got ample time to redirect their incoming force one by one, because that's what it really is. 4 one-on-one's in quick succession instead of 1 real one-on-four. When all charge you in an honest coordinated effort, at the same time, you can deal with one, maybe two before the others will get to you.
xFallenAngel 10 months ago
@xFallenAngel
it's well known that it's choreographed aikido demonstrations are because if the students don't go with the flip they could get hurt real bad. it's not like it's a secret.
Expendable2010 10 months ago
@Expendable2010 The problems begin then when a video is presented in a way that suggests that choregraphed demonstrations accurately model reality. Which happens all too often.
xFallenAngel 10 months ago
@xFallenAngel
true you have a point but at different points they come at him like they mean it and he reacts quickly. but aikido is most effective against untrained thugs attacking on the street it's purely defensive. in a fight with another talented martial artist this would do you no good but aikido is basically pure and simple self defense.

@MITGAMESCOMPANY That was some wise shit my friend
ticosexy22 11 months ago
@MITGAMESCOMPANY In addition, While I admit to the positive benefits of learning an art like aikido, I do believe that the "Martialness" of eastern martial arts has been diluted. If you want to devote your life to learning all the mysteries of Aikido then fine, enjoy. Just remember that real fighting is bloody, chaotic, ugly and quick and you would be wise not to confuse the two.
tyjanium 11 months ago
@MITGAMESCOMPANY Look bro, all martial arts, every single one of them were born of the need to protect oneself AND/OR do violence against another in a time of war. The spiritual aspects of the eastern martial arts came after.
ANY martial art wether it be Aikido or western boxing takes a tremendous amount of training to perfect and pursuing that perfection will only bring good things, discipline, dedication, etc. as well the physical benefits.

@alfreddegreat It seems likely that the main reason the students don't attack the masters so viciously is because of the fear of injury. In Aikido, the harder your opponent attacks, the worse they're likely to be hurt.
Undercoverfire 5 months ago
@alfreddegreat i don't think you realize that its not choreographed when they flip, there doing that because its a joint lock you either go with the momentum of the throw or get your arm busted off... i can see your point about the amount of aggression they use with him, as they could go much harder but i think they wanna keep there joints intact ...

@alfreddegreat masters make it look easy. A black belt can make any martial art look easier than a beginner.
cheesemonkey1990 4 months ago
@alfreddegreat It's a respect toward sensei because he is teaching at that moment. If the sensei wanted, he'd hurt the "attacker". Aikido in a dojo is never meant to hurt, but to teach and learn. Aikido in a life or death situation is a dangerous weapon. That's why is the way of harmony; because even if great aikidokas have such a power, their intentions are always peaceful. If not, every aikidoka would be a serial killer. That's what O'sensei thought.

I'm not saying that Aikido is a worthless martial art. I'm saying that the techniques of Aikido need to be applied to an uncooperative opponent who is willing to at least throw full contact punches and attacks. This should be practiced regularly, which means that some protective equipment should be worn. Unless you're tired of your teeth and have a penchant for concussions.
edwards99 1 year ago
@edwards99 Good point. Thats why real Aikido schools practice with real attacks.
purplesaxark 1 year ago
How exactly are these people attacking the defender? Running at him with their hands out? That's an attack? No punch attempts, no kicking attempts, just run at the guy with your hands out. One on one, attack someone in any mma ring like that- but please wear a mouthpiece. I believe that the originator of this art had true skill, but somehow, it got watered down when they stopped using force on force training like muay thai, judo, sambo, boxing, san shou, dog brothers martial arts, mma,etc

Train harder than they do!
metaddicta 1 year ago
To anyone with a mind...
The concept of the school, the test, the technique, all the comments, all part ofthe truth. What really I see is learning positions, how to move between opponents, the techniques applications are all relevant. The faster, the stronger, the more easy to make technique work. train hard my friends!
metaddicta 1 year ago
everyones entitled to their opinions, but really when will you ever be rushed by three people who are trained in aikido??? The Idea of the Randori is to practically implicate the moves and techniques you have learned and do it under pressure. And those of you who think Aikido is fake or people just doing flips I only hope you never have to find out the hard way just how affective it is. All martial arts can be dangerous and effective, it only depends on the practitioner as to to how effective!

really anyone who thinks aikido is fake go up to a aikido teacher in your area and try to fight him and see how real or fake it is for your self. my aikido teacher once told me to really try to hurt him, so did I tried karate on him, he blocked every punch and had me on my ass. then i tried to switch it up and tried some wing chun on him, only to be blocked and thrown. I literally tried everything i knew on him.
Coyotespirit4 1 year ago
@Coyotespirit4 ok by the way I've been in many STREET fights, and trough that I have gained the knowledge that (least in MY experience) in 90% of fight's people try to grab you or run at you and those are times when aikido is very effective. but I would suggest taking a style that has more striking like karate wing chun or something of that nature (Chinese styles like hung gar go well together with aikido) to accent your aikido so that when attacked by a striker you are ready for it
Coyotespirit4 1 year ago

The point of this isn't to throw people to the ground, it is to counter and if needed strike back or submit someone
jacob12102 1 year ago
@mondain300 If these people didn't "fly through the air" there'd be a lot of severely injured Aikidokans and that just wouldn't be good for the art's reputation--or maybe it would, who knows?--. What I do know is, that we all want to train pragmatic and realistic scenarios when we're training to fight, but the issue with that is, if we really did simulate these well enough, we'd spend too much time in a hospital bed and not in a gym.

... aikido is not teached to fight, but to control oneself. In real life avoiding the fight always means you are understanding what's aikido about. A well trained high grade, even if he knows he may be untouchable, has no fury inside nor vengeance thirst, because he is above the mere human animal instinct since he has reached the "gods" observation level.
yowyOw69 1 year ago
