The writers of the Wire brought these kids into the show in order to show us how drug dealers, stick up kids, junkies and inner-city politicians are created. Namond becomes a typical politician. Dukie became a junkie. Michael became a stick up kid. Randy becomes a drug dealer.
And this show makes you think, had there been more teachers like Prezbo, less 'role-models' like Marlo, less mothers like De'Londa and Michael's mom, more foster and adoptive parents like the Colvins, these boys would have been something great. There needs to be more fair shakes in inner city kids lives, nothing gradious just a fair shake on the world.
That said, Kenard would have been an evil little shit regardless of upbringing.
This makes you think what kind of person Michael would have been? Namond is a smart guy, but Michael was a natural leader and was smarter than the rest of the guys, hell he probably would have been Mayor of the city by the time he was 35 if he was given a fair shake in life. Same with Dukie, had they been given fair shakes in life, most of these kids would have been upstanding members of the community instead of drug dealers dying before they are 30.
Don't forget Wallace... Wallace's situation was a mix of all the season 4 kids'. He cared for kids like Michael, wasn't into "the game" like Namond, had to support himself like Dukie and in every other way he was like Randy lol
Namond made it through the whole thing, because he had the resources all along. He had the money and he had a home. His step father adopted him because he saw something in Namond. He knew he wasnt a corner boy.
The problem with him is season 4 was the way he treated Dukie. He tormented him because he was poorer than him, not only that.. it was to make himself look tougher. Like twist said, his mother was forcing him to be his father.. something that his not and he had to accept that.

Really good to see the streets not claim another. Namond was very lucky to have people that gave a shit about him and his future. Felt bad that Duke, Mike, and Randy didn't make it out but thats the dark reality that The Wire shows. The streets claims so many lives. I'm probably the only Wire fan in the world who's favorite Boy of Summer is Namond. Yes, he was a douche for most of season 4, but think about the position he was in. He was expected by his parents to be built for the streets, so he was forced to create the illusion that he was all that. The very first time we see him we know he's not interested in being a gangster. More than Mike, Randy, or Dukie, Namond was forced to lie to himself. I loved the fact he got a happy ending.

But the pressures from the environment they live in tore them all up. Even though he acted like a bitch sometimes, I was still pulling for the kid. I felt so elated, when I watched this scene. His character had so much depth. Namond might be the most satisfying character out of the whole series.

Namond wasn't a douche, really. His parents were both just forcing him into a life that not only did he not want, but he wasn't built for, so he was frustrated. With Colvin looking after him he'll turn out fine.

@rudysmustache And the lesson here is that all kids need to have the opportunity to succeed instead of being isolated and chewed out by the system. All of the kids could have turned out like Namond. But the pressures from the environment they live in tore them all up. We need to increase funding drastically to inner-city schools as well as programs that give kids opportunities to succeed in life.

@HisEmptyHouse Honestly,Dukie, I dont know if it was pressure but he honestly didn't know what his teacher had in store for him. His last chance and successful chance could of been his teacher instead he lies about what he's doing with the money. Dukie was probly just fed up but I think he lost out on his chance. I dont know why Michael just didn't stay with the aunt. Now Randy I feel really upset for hopefully things turn around. Namond is safe because he didnt go through the system.
