mariah is better. Of course minnie also better. but mariah's technique, especially on the poked whistle note at emotions, and the melisma whistle at bliss. Really impressive.
Mariah's sounds more like singing and minnie's sounds more like she's playing with her notes. I prefer mariah's. I love her control and clarity of her whistles.
@capcomfighter13 I'm not going to choose, or compare between the two of them, either. As you said, "it's 'apples and oranges,' " when it comes to any discussion of Minnie Riperton's, and Mariah Carey's, voices. Though they both used the "whistle"-pitch, their voices were different.
I prefer Mariah. her notes sounded better and they were more controlled. ALthough Minnies great, hers sounded kind of annoying and just like she was screaming with no control over the notes
Minnie is the better of the two and she doesn't have to stick her finger in her ear to sing which is much too distracting when you are watching them live.
@winsome1235 Mariah usually sings higher notes so she sticks her finger in her ear to make sure of hitting the right notes. I think that holding some high notes TOO LONG (which is sometimes annoying) is much more distracting than sticking a finger in your ear to hit the right notes. And I agree with @niltash4ever: "STARTED BY MINNIE AND PERFECTED BY MARIAH". I respect Mariah, Mariah respects Minnie so I respect Minnie. BTW, I prefer Mariah, of course!
I love Mariah but Minnie blew that bitch to pieces. You could clear hear the words Minnie were saying in that high pitch tone. Mariah's where just there to further the melody.
@MidwestFemcee765 excuse me but bullcrap1! minnie was def. praised for the whislte!!! shoot erbody thought she was the only one who cud dot it until mariah came out. sorry if i sound mean or rude, im not tryin too. have a merry xmas!!
it's not really fair to judge the two. they're not contemporaries. Minnie is obviously a big influence. Minnie broke the ground. Mariah took it to a whole other place.
I like both artist, but if you take Minnie and put her in todays music she would win the battle, everything Mariah does today Minnie could have done, with no problems what so ever. Minnie is actually one of Mariah's influences.
of course minnie wins in holding notes just because she sings the lower whistle notes...if you notice,at 08.10-08.28 mariah sings whistle up and downs...going thru the slow fluctuations...of course that'll takes more exhaling breath...
Minnie sounds great. If she was here still I would of love to see her beat Mariah Carey, she held the longest note ever and a I respect her for that. RIP minnie!
Anyone (like this numskull) below me DARE to say MC is better is simply OUT OF HIS MIND. Minnie shows more potency in all the rounds. When she enunciates you can clearly understand WITHOUT relying on the intro OR the beat. Her tones have more colors and are clearer; that's why Shanice can say Minnie is the QUEEN OF WHISTLE TONES. MC is good but she is no Minnie NOR Shanice when it comes on to strength and clarity AND hers are mostly in the false cord which has weaken her voice! So she CAN'T win!
I can understand that opinion, but I don't think there is a lot fo different between the two... not enough for a major arguement. Actually, i think it is easy to pick Minnie out of respect or nostagia, but in terms of sound, this is a waste of discussion. Even if you give Minnie the nod on the high ranges (maybe), overall Mariah has a wider range from top to bottom. But both or good, and that's good enough for me.
@simple1for1, If that's good enough for you, why the need to point to Minnie's sound as inferior? Minnie has a natural ethereal sound that she can easily alter. Outside of the airiness, MC doesn't have much alteration to her whistle, but that fine piercing sound. Also Minne's recordings reflect her true voice, MC is enhanced.
@Kumtekmeon Actually, I didn't say Minnie's sound was inferior. What i said was, Mariah has a wider vocal range, which does not say a thing about vocal quality. That was just pointing out a difference in their voices the way some focus on differences between the two artists within their high whistle range. I also said that *maybe* you could give the nod to minnie in the high range. I said that because Minnie had a higher speaking voice, which may have made singing up top more natural for her.
@simple1for1 I used inferior in relation to your point, ''i think it is easy to pick Minnie out of respect or nostagia, but in terms of sound, this is a waste of discussion.'' This quote CLEARLY suggests to me that you think Minnie's whistles are inferior to MC. No need to say otherwise, because I DO think MC's whistles are inferior to Minnie and it's not because Minnie is the first OR because she has passed on, BUT because of texture, clarity, control, and application. You may say likewise.
i think minnie did a really good job with the use of her high notes....but in my opinions mariahis the winner she has better control and sound of her high not...you should have used the high note from all in our mind for the fun note or in the high note one...just a suggestion...but i kove the comparision you did with the two..i think minnie is great for she inspired MC... but MC is way better to me not only in the high ntoes but in the use of her voice it amazing and che can do lots of sounds..
mariah is better. Of course minnie also better. but mariah's technique, especially on the poked whistle note at emotions, and the melisma whistle at bliss. Really impressive.

Mariah. Minnie has a great tonal production, but she has not showcased the same coloratura skills.
