  • "Twelve Dreams of Doctor Sardonicus" has to be in my all time top 25. Very tasty stuff that unfortunately received only cult status at the time. I hope they blossom in the way The Kinks have recently, and become popular with young people.

  • I was 17 when this album came out and I was immediately hooked. Spirit was one of the best damn rock bands ever. I listen to their music at least every 2-3 days.

  • A drummer that played Polka to Rock is a huge switch.

  • Twelve Dreams of Doctor Sardonicus, classic album, great band. Spirit are credited as having produced the first modern Rock Song, 'I Got A Line On You'

  • Nice cowbbell work. I dig this band still, 40 years after I discovered them.

  • Brill tune.

  • Is Randy or Jay singing lead here?

  • @thespeez Jay Ferguson. Check out his lead singing and playing in famed band JoJo Gunne

  • touchy situation reach for the dollar

  • Thank you!! This song is my very, very favorite of all time! And that's saying something for 50 years I've been on this earth and loving music, all kinds, this entire time! It is the perfect blend of kick-A drums, bottom beat, vocals, and everything I love about R+R and it gets me right to the center and knocks me right down!!! Lovin' it!!

  • The Twelve dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus...... awesome album, unforgettable talent.

  • Ed Cassidy is still with us. He's 88 years old now. Never knew he was Randy's 'new dad'!!

  • wot a amazing band, shame they not as well known as some lesser bands, one of my all time fav albums!

  • I'm plotting my second half while these kids are plotting their first half. I miss nice music. I tell folks "I sure wished I liked bad music, because I'd have so many stations to listen to." What a fun song. Makes lawn mowing a dance exercise. Sure it's political - I suppose, but you don't have to choose a side.

  • Agree

  • Pure damage. Funk damage.

  • I see losers come in threes.

  • You can probably get some classic rock stations in Canada to play requests. I'd certainly give it a try. I did and they played my request.

  • What 2 losers disliked this?

  • @rsmerz three losers with no soul. (I guess one of the desenters is my ex-wife,probably.

  • Was Ed Cassidy known as Mr. Skin?

  • @jwmellott According to the liner notes and band comments, yes.

  • GOOGLE > I SAW al gore's PENIS says THE ANGEL SURETY ROSE :-)

  • Most of the music on my dangerous to listen to while cycling in a city list is noticeably different to this [Rage Against the Machine , Dinosaur Jr , Ministry etc] But aside from being up tempo it just gives such a sensation of elation as to become perilous.Nice one

Take care the couch wasn't designed as a flying machine and looking in the mirror is only good for seeing where you've already been!

    Take care

  • Finding this was like putting a tape in a VCR and watching it. I played "Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus" as an "Underground FM" DJ until it was dust...and I've never forgotten it. So many killer cuts on one piece of vinyl! And, a life to go with it.

  • @TheKWhelan The 60's is where it's at man! I'm a 70's child into the 60's!

  • @TheKWhelan I'm a 90's child born in the body of a 30's child.

  • @TheKWhelan Bro, you have no idea how much fun it was.!

  • Randy California (born Randy Craig Wolfe; February 20, 1951-January 2, 1997) He was 15 years old when his mother and new stepfather Ed Cassidy, moved to New York City in the summer of 1966.

It was there, at Manny's Guitars, that Randy met Jimi Hendrix. He played in Hendrix's band Jimmy James & the Blue Flames. The stage name "Randy California" was given to him by Hendrix to distinguish him from another Randy in the band.

  • @SaintHarp1

Very good background information. Thank you very much. I have a DVD of Jimi Hendrix and it goes over his whole life. It is very well done. The best guitar player with blues and rock that I have ever heard.

  • @SaintHarp1 anyone know if ed cassidy is still alive? he`s gotta be pushing 90!!!! he was the drummer for spirit

  • Brings back all kinds of memories at least the ones that I can remember, .lol

  • Randy was playing with Jimi in New York at 15 when Chas Chaneller offered to take Jimi to England and make him a star. Randy was to go also, but at 15 his parents wouldn't permit it.

  • I consider Mr. Skin right up there with Hendrix's If 6 were 9 as defining the psychodelic era in song because of its unique sound. Does anybody know the connection between Randy and Jimi? I heard they actually played together in a band before Hendrix became famous and Spirit formed.

  • I luv them!

  • Great band. awesome sound......

  • I too partook of the LSD and enjoyed this band . Good times

  • when i was a teenager i loved this album. i'd sit back and do acid and stare at the pictures in the album and listen to it.AWESOME ALBUM! easy 15 stars!

  • What a great band!

    Amazing tune!

  • Sweet.

  • When I was kid ,listening to the radio, this expanded in my mind like a bright pink psychedelic bubble gum planet

  • sampled by aim

  • The twelve dreams of Dr. Sardonicus...

  • I was crazy about this band in the 70's as a wanna-rock music enthusiast - and after finding them again here, I'm still crazy about this band as a the-kids-are-gone-let's-rock- music enthusiast. This music has definitly passed the test of time, and the kids AND their friends loved it too!

  • Great sound.

    Love the lead singer's voice!

    Great video!!!!

  • anyone get the feeling "sanford and son" is coming on? lol love spirit

  • Drummer Ed Cassidy was Randy California's uncle. Ed was about 50 when Spirit hit their peak in the early 70's..monster drummer. JoJo Gunne, the lead singer went to form his own group and had moderate success with "Run, Run, Run" in 1972. Randy California drowned Christmas Day, 1999 in Hawaii

trying to rescue his young son from a riptide.

  • Cass, now 86, was Randy's stepfather, marrying Randy's mother. Spirit's peak years were roughly 1968-1971 and it was Jay Ferguson and Mark Andes who left Spirit and formed the band called Jo Jo Gunne. Jay was the lead singer on most Spirit tracks; Randy sang lead, too.

  • thx maida...i played a little fast n loose with the facts....i stand corrected.

  • @rowdymax1 mark andes was in jo jo gunn with jay the singer after spirit, then mark joined heart, and was Ann wilson's boyfriend for a while

  • i drank Heinikins with Spirit after a club gig in Philadelphia. I was pretty wasted and shined the bald drummer's head. He was cool.

  • check the cosmic utterance: "your life will only gain if your love's the final measure" -- far preceded Abbey Road's final line "and in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make" --

So there it is: everybody get your hippy on, and make love not war!!

  • Yes, it's a great album. A top favorite of mine.

But who needed videos or doobies to appreciate it?

  • Man, I use to smoke a doobie & ride around in my Fiat 850 with this wafting out of the speakers . . . . good times.

  • Man,you really got some guts !!!

  • nah, doesnt take guts... just a lack of responsibility and consideration for other people combined with a lot of stupidity.

i should know, did it a lot

  • Talking about ridin round in a fiat 850 Wally !

  • Listenin to this groovy band is like comin' to a new life of new sensations

  • please post elijah

  • All 4 LP's with the original lineup are GREAT!

PLAY YOUR SPIRIT CD'S TODAY! It's keyboardist John Locke's Birthday.

  • Mr. Skin Rules!

  • were sorry this video is no longer available

    WHAT HAPPENED TO IT ??

  • I used to have an LP by LOVE which I loved very much.Does anyone know any name of their songs I would love to listen to them again.

  • I recently bought this CD. I still miss my old scratchy album. Analog recordings just had a different sound. Don't care how many bits in the digital A/D converter. It is not the same. Transients are different. Sound is different.

  • Probably my all time favourite Rock album

  • municipal aditorium hialeah fla played by

  • Just let your head take a trip m-a-a-a-n~

    It's 'sudden pleasure!'

  • One of the GREATEST songs of all time!

Randy California died trying to rescue his son in the Hawaiian surf!

Do not equate this classic song with low class shithead porn _ LOSER below!

You are a idiot and know nothing.

This band was way ahead of itz time!

    Just like me.

    Bobby Boo

    taxiboysdrummer

  • oh yes thats right what a tragedy.Thats was only a few years back wasnt it???such a shame!!!!!!!RIP Randy.

  • I've listened to Spirit since I was turned on to them over 30 yrs. ago. They never get old, but my LPs are pretty worn out.

  • "Twelve Dreams of Dr Sandonicus" is a masterpiece. Very trippy, yet.....very together. This album should be one of the items placed in a time capsule that will define human culture to future and far out civilizations.

  • (Sardonicus)...sorry for the typo
