"Twelve Dreams of Doctor Sardonicus" has to be in my all time top 25. Very tasty stuff that unfortunately received only cult status at the time. I hope they blossom in the way The Kinks have recently, and become popular with young people.
I was 17 when this album came out and I was immediately hooked. Spirit was one of the best damn rock bands ever. I listen to their music at least every 2-3 days.
Twelve Dreams of Doctor Sardonicus, classic album, great band. Spirit are credited as having produced the first modern Rock Song, 'I Got A Line On You'
Thank you!! This song is my very, very favorite of all time! And that's saying something for 50 years I've been on this earth and loving music, all kinds, this entire time! It is the perfect blend of kick-A drums, bottom beat, vocals, and everything I love about R+R and it gets me right to the center and knocks me right down!!! Lovin' it!!
I'm plotting my second half while these kids are plotting their first half. I miss nice music. I tell folks "I sure wished I liked bad music, because I'd have so many stations to listen to." What a fun song. Makes lawn mowing a dance exercise. Sure it's political - I suppose, but you don't have to choose a side.
Most of the music on my dangerous to listen to while cycling in a city list is noticeably different to this [Rage Against the Machine , Dinosaur Jr , Ministry etc] But aside from being up tempo it just gives such a sensation of elation as to become perilous.Nice one
Finding this was like putting a tape in a VCR and watching it. I played "Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus" as an "Underground FM" DJ until it was dust...and I've never forgotten it. So many killer cuts on one piece of vinyl! And, a life to go with it.
Another great song from the great album The Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus! My brother in law turned me onto this album, and I love it . I've got nothing to hide. But I've got a line on you babe, that's just Nature's Way! And even with all the brass in the refrain! Just love this album! Whatever happened to them? If anyone knows, please let me know!
Randy California (born Randy Craig Wolfe; February 20, 1951-January 2, 1997) He was 15 years old when his mother and new stepfather Ed Cassidy, moved to New York City in the summer of 1966.
It was there, at Manny's Guitars, that Randy met Jimi Hendrix. He played in Hendrix's band Jimmy James & the Blue Flames. The stage name "Randy California" was given to him by Hendrix to distinguish him from another Randy in the band.
Very good background information. Thank you very much. I have a DVD of Jimi Hendrix and it goes over his whole life. It is very well done. The best guitar player with blues and rock that I have ever heard.
Randy was playing with Jimi in New York at 15 when Chas Chaneller offered to take Jimi to England and make him a star. Randy was to go also, but at 15 his parents wouldn't permit it.
I consider Mr. Skin right up there with Hendrix's If 6 were 9 as defining the psychodelic era in song because of its unique sound. Does anybody know the connection between Randy and Jimi? I heard they actually played together in a band before Hendrix became famous and Spirit formed.
when i was a teenager i loved this album. i'd sit back and do acid and stare at the pictures in the album and listen to it.AWESOME ALBUM! easy 15 stars!
I was crazy about this band in the 70's as a wanna-rock music enthusiast - and after finding them again here, I'm still crazy about this band as a the-kids-are-gone-let's-rock- music enthusiast. This music has definitly passed the test of time, and the kids AND their friends loved it too!
Drummer Ed Cassidy was Randy California's uncle. Ed was about 50 when Spirit hit their peak in the early 70's..monster drummer. JoJo Gunne, the lead singer went to form his own group and had moderate success with "Run, Run, Run" in 1972. Randy California drowned Christmas Day, 1999 in Hawaii
Cass, now 86, was Randy's stepfather, marrying Randy's mother. Spirit's peak years were roughly 1968-1971 and it was Jay Ferguson and Mark Andes who left Spirit and formed the band called Jo Jo Gunne. Jay was the lead singer on most Spirit tracks; Randy sang lead, too.
check the cosmic utterance: "your life will only gain if your love's the final measure" -- far preceded Abbey Road's final line "and in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make" --
So there it is: everybody get your hippy on, and make love not war!!
I recently bought this CD. I still miss my old scratchy album. Analog recordings just had a different sound. Don't care how many bits in the digital A/D converter. It is not the same. Transients are different. Sound is different.
"Twelve Dreams of Dr Sandonicus" is a masterpiece. Very trippy, yet.....very together. This album should be one of the items placed in a time capsule that will define human culture to future and far out civilizations.
