@josephdupont I guess tape woudln't hurt but I don't put it on. I like to hook barrels together at the bottom with an additional tap. That way they fill as one and empty as one vessel.
Thank you for posting this. This is very great and I would love to find some of those barrels that aren't so yukky like the white ones. Easy instructions are great.
Check out Rain Barrel Apparel on Facebook and Twitter for aesthetically pleasing rain barrel covers. You no longer have to have that eye sore of a milky white or blue barrel on the side of your house!
You can use one of several interconnected barrels as a backup for overflow. Just push the end of the overflow garden hose in to the same level drilled hole in a second barrel or it could be any much bigger plastic container/tank without a lid.
taxing rain water or saving it is wrong, we have GOD GIVEN RIGHTS. John 2:13-16. how dare u turn my fathers house into a market. the only thing that should revolve around money is MATERIALISM. boats, homes, iphones, gadgets. stop making it hard for humanity to live independently, by obtaining or producing their own energy! what are you going to do when technology wipes out our jobs? how will survive? do u know how to survive w/o money?
Think of all the poor starving water company execs that might loose their jobs or worse their perks and stock options because of your olive barrel antics.
@okhomestead that goes for a lot of things people just dont get that. you cant keep rain water but they sell cigarettes and alcohol whitch KILLS more people then anything even WAR P.S think outside the BOX
@WaxingRadiance In some states its illegal in other states it is encouraged because it takes pressure off the City...people use less water, and less water goes out in the sewer. It is encouraged and cities in MA will sell rain barrels at a discount because it's good for the environment.
If it ever gets to the point where my running water stops working (and thats a big if), I'd just lay down a tarp on the lawn with weights on it to collect the water and then siphon and filter it into bottles. The surface area would be so much larger, and much more rain would be caught.
@jaster030 You don't just plop this barrel down anywhere and hope rain falls in... you put it under a downspout from a gutter system that drains from the roof of your house which has much more surface area than any tarp. Put one of these at each downspout on the gutters of your house and you will have 150 gallons of fresh water in just one good rainstorm.
@MainTightSqueeze I did not know that. I assume I'd need to clean out the gutters a bit first? Even with the screen, I'd have a feeling the water would be a milky brown color from all the bird crap and rotten plant material. Maybe not though, obviously I've never looked into this.
@jaster030 Yeah, my recommendation would be to flush out the gutters by hand before placing your barrels and find a screen material that's as fine as possible to really minimize particulate. I would also recommend a secondary filtration and/or purification method like boiling before actually consuming the water. If you're just using it to water plants or do other non-potable tasks then you don't have to go to great lengths.
@jaster030 I thought that the probabilty of the water not working was slim..then in May we had terrible flooding and we didnt have running water for 1 month due to water mains being washed out...luckily i had barrels and had plenty of water for toilet flushing and sanitation...i highly recommend everyone have at least one barrel.
@gasdorf It's mainly used for irrigation. Watering plants and crops. Although you could take the water then run it through a filter (like a Berkey) and then drink it.
This water could be used for drinking if you properly treat it by either filtering and boiling, or filtering and chemical treatment (water purification tablets). Otherwise, this water can be used for flushing toilets or watering plants.
excellent, I did a study and left a garbage can under a downspout just to see how much water it collected. It was filled in one thunderstorm. Gonna have to try this. But beware, I hear in some states they are fining ppl for collecting rainwater. Shit, in Oregon they had armed agents raid a 7 yr old girls lemonade stand. Because she didnt buy a permit to make 5 bucks.
@MYAR15SaysImFree We can no longer fear the State and their intimidation tactics. If they they take it down replace it, if they burn it down rebuild it. If they throw you in jail, make a list and start "looking them up" when you get out.
Teflon tape on the bottom and why not run the overflow to yet another barrel?

Might work if it rained in Arizona! Around these parts it would be a dust barrel, about the only thing it could ever collect around these parts!

Except his are made of concrete and the hold about 6000 gallons each.
