  • Bravo

  • dont get it. Someone explain.

    Especially the ending.

  • I have seen some shots from this film before as they are used in documentaries about the Weimar Republic but it was wonderful to see the whole thing. It was especially poignant to see the children - what horrors awaited them in the 1940s.

    Many thanks.

  • Oh! If only Germany had declined to intervene on behalf of the Australo-Hungarian Empire at the start of WW1 but instead consulted with Great Britain and demanded JUSTICE for the assasination of Archduke Ferdinand at the same time insisted that international relations remained peaceful. The auld cosmopolitan Berlin would still be with us today, along with six million jews, nine million other Holocaust victims, countless war dead and all their descendants...

  • why there is no music mister ?

    i'm searching for Meisel's work

  • Such a haunting film!

  • Prima gelenkter Blick von Ruttmann in eine tolle Welt. Zu schade, dass die dann den zweiten Weltkrieg angefangen haben.

  • Ein wunderbarer Film von Berlin, daß es so leider nicht mehr gibt.

  • Bravo! A truly magnificent symphony.

  • What a fantastic look into a fascinating, tragically lost world.

Thank you so much for posting it, "Dr. Mabuse" (now there's another great movie! :D)

  • No problem! =) Have you seen all three of the Dr. Mabuse films? (I'm hoping to get "The 1,000 Eyes of Dr. Mabuse" for x-mas.) Are there any other Fritz Lang films that you particularly like?

  • I've seen "Der Spieler" and most of "Testament", but none of "1,000 Eyes".

And Lang's probably my favorite film director! Though it's cliche, I'd say "Metropolis" and "M" are my two favorites of his films, though I've liked the other ones I've been able to see. Other than Mabuse, what are your favorites?

  • "M", "Metropolis", "Spies"... I'd say really any of his early work. The atmosphere is superb, the plots are amazing, and so many of the films are like little windows into Berlin during the 1920's and 30's. It's the visual equivalent of eating a really good steak, lol.

  • "Spies" was great and "Frau im Mond" was excellent, but mostly on a technical scale. I agree about the atmosphere of his early films and say they're better overall, but a couple suffer from cases of "von-Harbou-itis" in the plot department. Still, they're superior to most contemporary (if not modern!) films.

  • This film was considered an important example of German cinema. My recollection is that it was a "quota" film produced by Fox to fulfill a need to produce a number of German films, usually at low cost, to offset imported films from Hollywood, providing the German producers with some work.

I thank Dr. Marbuse for providing me an opportunity to see this film, thirty five years after I read about it.

  • From 9:05-9:11 is seen a Rumpler Tropfenwagen, a very rare car. In the film 'Metropolis' many of these were destroyed, today there are only 2 known to survive out of ca. 100 production.
