Yes, as the volatiles begin to burn off there is a fair amount of smoke, but i also noticed that the larger dia. the breaching is from the furnace to the stack the less smoke is created over all. I had a 6" line, and it plugged up a lot, and created much more smoke than my 8" line does now. Coal needs much more air than wood to burn, When it is just coking is when the smoke is created. no my house does not have much black soot in it...Only if the unit is not drafting right does it puff some!

When you first stoke it up, I would imagine it puts out a lot more smoke until the volatiles burn off right? I'm burning bitumonous and the inital stoking creates ALOT of smoke.....then it lessens after 10 minutes or so. Do you have black soot on your house much? I've noticed the snow gets covered with a bit of soot from time to time around the house.....just wondering if thsi is normal.
