This is the only romantic film that I feel I'm able to relate to. As a sub who is in a total power exchange relationship, it's absolutely heart-warming to see a movie that shows D/s relationships in a positive, romantic light.

My only complaint about this movie - it was such an exceedingly difficult subject to pull off, that ... why the hell hasn't this director made many more movies since this one? His control of the subject matter, acting, tone, stylization, & pacing is superb - he puts 90% of the DGA to shame. He's taken an incendiary subject & actually made a insane yet entertaining film with likeable, sympathetic characters. What a talented guy - can't we blackmail this director into making more movies??

@cyberlarry7 He faithfully adapted the film from a short story.  Not sure what the name of it is but it's mentioned in the DVD extras. And he probably would do it if he was given such good content again to work with.

If you think Secretary is a porno try actually watching that movie some time. It's a brilliant observation of how pain can bring healing as long as it’s applied by the right hand. It examines sadomasochism perfectly, without making it too pornographic or humourous & in essence is a rather romantic love story about two very odd people connecting. Brilliant film :)

You really don't even have to understand submissive and dominant relationships to love this movie. It really does a good job of explaining Maggie Gyllenhal's character and how she develops throughout the movie!

Possibly one of the greatest movies of our times about what is still essentially a very underground sexual movement. It's different but it's just so natural for some people that it's hard for this movie not to make you smile even if you have no interest in BDSM. The contrast between the sadness of Lee's mental state and the happiness she gains from being with Edward is sublime to watch.

@lilithgrrrl Because the people that do not understand it, fear it, or have some religious inflections toward it paint is as "weird" or "perverted," but there is truly A LOT of love, respect, trust and sweetness involved. I mean for some (like me) it's all a lead up to the after-play. For those not in the know, imagine a bit between orgasm, falling in love, and foreplay... and after-play is still infinity times better. ;-)
