With no offense intended, Mr. Yudoff, if you feel that you are no longer able to effectively lobby the state for money that the UC needs to run smoothly, perhaps you should step aside.
the people who are in the middle class still dont have enough money to pay for this! by the time we pay this we end up in debt and at a lesser advantage than the poor who get free education!!
I'm not so sure that "he's offering no solution". The solution is to come up with a fair way of dealing with all of these budget cuts and it seems like they've tried to do the best they can. I'd really like to hear some possible alternative solutions from all of the people criticizing him. And I don't really think lower salaries for the top echelon in the UC system will cover more than a very small fraction of what needs to be covered.
But lower salaries for university administrators will bring them closer in line with what they're actually worth. Let's be honest. Administrators at public universities are not worth the money they make, and I daresay any university employee would largely agree. I'm a UC alum and a current CSU student and I can say that UC/CSU administrators and staff are shockingly overpaid. Bringing in administrators at salaries higher than their predecessors is an absolute insult to students and alumni.
I really don't quite understand what the UC-wide strike/walkout is all about. What exactly is being protested? The fact that there has been this massive decrease in funding from the state or the way that the UC regents have tried to deal with it?
Sorry folks, Mark is right. He is trying the best he can. He is trying to inspire leadership, but THE STATE IS OUT OF MONEY. Obama has a printing press, California does not. And he has tried to protect lower paid employees as well as he can...as stated in the second video, the furloughs are more more appropriate than those across the board furloughs that the state is using. There are no lies. There just is no money, and you'd think educated people would recognize this.
really what about the middle class... who are too "rich" for grants and scholarships.... but too poor to pay these fees.... obviously its a problem.... but WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT????
myself included.... i know there will be a lot of drop outs if this increase takes place!
what about the middle income kids? thousands upon thousands of dollars doesn't mean anything to us? its just more debt we'll probably never be able to pay off
i see why this guy gets paid $850k a year- he diverts attention remarkably well away from the fact that he gets paid $850k to do nothing to remedy the underlying causes of the crisis
I agree, it's more like he's making excuses about why it's not his problem rather then offering a solution or a remedy for it. That isn't leadership. I don't have anything personal against the man, this is all I have to say.
It's true, the UC, even with the increases is still a "good deal." While it's unfortunate to raise fees and make things more difficult for the middle-income students, let's not over-dramatize here... the UC is not getting privatized as a result of this. I appreciate his commitment to the schools quality and not cutting corners in that regard. Let's hope everything else works out for the students, faculty and staff...
...If they were, they would be making clear statements that reflect their prioritization of public character, not a jumble of misplaced statistics and straw-man rebuttals. When Yudof makes statements like "there are no other choices" and says he "understands the students", he loses credibility and insults the students, faculty and workers of this university. The movement we are building has strength and power that he clearly does not care to understand. Democratize UC!
...The UCs are successful not simply because they have the best (which apparently = highest paid) faculty , but because they (in theory) are public: they provide knowledge and access to knowledge to the people, providing them with the tools to make positive change in their environments. The people making these decisions, from the governor down the regents and Yudof are clearly not vested in those interests.(CONT)
How insulting that he can twist the facts like this and then act as if the students are only angry about fee hikes! The students, workers, and faculty of this university are uniting precisely to fight against the private, corporate, self-interested attitude that Yudof and the regents clearly have and assume everyone else should have, because apparently "this is the world we live in". (CONT)
I am a student at UC Berkeley and I am ashamed to say that Yudof sounds like the CEO of a gross, ambitious profit- making company. I think he does not know that he is the president of the greatest public university system in the United States! He is portraying these shameful budget management decisions as being "inevitable". As history shows, when a leader says that a (take wars and foreign invasions as examples) path of action is inevitable, BEWARE!!! The leader is lying.
I agree about the furloughs, I can give up a day a month for a better university. I just dont know how to stay in school if financial aid gets cut. I am on full scholarship and just want to make it though the system. Thank god for the Blue and Gold program!
Unfortunately--and this is the grim reality--Yudof is laying out a clearer argument than any of the myriad of faculty- or student-led interest groups.
While the PUBLIC VS. PRIVATE EDUCATION dichotomy is convenient and easy, it, by no means, measures up the complicated nature of the UC history of financial woes. While Yudof passes the buck to the State, whom, in his estimation, has failed all of us, he also reminds us that cuts may come at the cost of quality. What's it gonna be people?
He's had himself declared "The Decider" like Bush - Faculty no longer have a vote. Basically we are witness to a recapitulation of the Bush Regime in miniature with UC as the USA. Corporate instrumentalism of the UC System and the consolidating power at the top at expense of the people and education. A shame. Throw the devil out.
Straight shooter? Maybe. But he is doing nothing...nothing at all to remedy the current situation. It's deal with it attitude. Why do we have to pay for the mistakes that were made (not by us)? I'm doing my job better and getting paid less to do it. All full-time students and faculty & staff making less than middle income ($65,000) should protected from these cuts, furloughs, and hikes in student fees.
Pres. Yudoff says we have to own up to the grim reality of the world we find ourselves in. The problem with this approach is that it belies his primary responsibility: leadership. UC is a powerful institution and his responsibility is to explain why investing in the future is in the state's greater interest. In this regard he might follow the lead of Pres. Obama. This failed area of leadership has a dated but perhaps still meaningful name: long ago it was called "the vision thing."
That is so true. I heard the UC system is increasingly admitting more out-of-state and international students who would be paying estimated 40.000 dollars a year in tuition starting next year. I thought UC was state school and committed to serve the community. Huh?
Wow, this is the first video (3rd excluding different parts) I've seen of Mark Yudof. I have to say it's hard to know what someone is really like without watching them.
To that end, Mark has really gained my respect. I wish everyone the best.

How does being to stay in school for longer have to do with saving money? He is full of BS.

I wonder how the other campuses are dealing with this issue.
Does anyone know whether this proposal is an agreement across the UC schools or just UCB?

Mark Yudof WANTS the UC to be privatized, WANTS for it to be only for the rich and out-of-state, and has FAILED as a leader of a PUBLIC university.

you must work for a union. When the PUBLIC cuts funding then PUBLIC universities must either cut or raise fees.
