this sounds so polished and dreamy compared to the course scat that has been made for over 15 years. why is there no place on satellite radio for songs like this?
I met my Atlanta Lady in 1981 at Georgia Southern. Three years later I married her and remained devoted for the next 25 years until I lost her to breast cancer. I used to play this song on Z102 in Savannah while she listened in Statesboro. What a magical memory... I miss you, sweetheart, and will love you forever.
Im familiar with Hearts as I heard it when I was 7 years old on the radio when my parents had the local hits station playing. Pretty song and kind of sad. This one, named after the city I live in today, is alot more upbeat, however I have NEVER heard it before now. I think Hearts was more popular.
Voodoooooooooganik - Thanks for posting this song!
Listen for great music like this on a new radio station called "OffTheCharts" - featuring 70's (and some 80's) lost hits and chart wonders!
Go to Live365.com, type OFFTHECHARTS in the Search box and click on the station logo. The audio stream should begin. Become a VIP member and listen commercial free!
Exquisitely sophisticated. Splendidly tasteful. Deliciously understated. WHY did Marty not enjoy more commercial success than he did? Oh, I guess I answered my own question, didn't I? His music was too sophisticated, tasteful and understated for the masses. Well, for those of us who assess music in ways other than popularity, he'll always hold a special place of artistry.
. . s t . . .
Interesting video. Always wondered why Marty didn't do a cover of "Today" from his Airplane days or a similar tune as the follow-up to Hearts. This is just too MOR for a rock & roll artist, in my opinion. Bet he would've had a huge stack of solo hits had he followed up Hearts with a pop Airplane classic...It's No Secret would also have been a great follow up to Hearts
I thought he was left out while with the airplane/starship.....he never got the credit he deserved since his counterpart got all the credit/reviews........
I feel in his early stuff he did not have a say in their music. when they became the starship you can hear his voice on many more tunes. I feel his voice was used depending what song was a better fit for him to sing but still I say he was left out in many lead sings that should have been used under his beautiful voice.
I had also been searching for this song for almost 25 years. I never knew the name and finally I googled some lyrics that had come back to me and now found it. Marty Balin is great, very underrated and did some great songs singing lead for Jefferson Airplane/Starship throughout the 70's.
voodoo: thanks you SO MUCH for posting. this is such a great song from my childhood. don't think it went real far on the charts but... damn! if what airplay it got didn't have a profound musical effect on me.
I am so happy to hear other cuts from this amazing album. Now, if we could just hear Lydia again....if anyone can do it, old fans would love you for it!!
Jill it was only one night and almost 30 years ago but you made a lasting impression. It was a night to remember. Too bad, we didn't live in the same town. Who knows? I hope the "Trade Winds" have blown your way! You will always be my Atlanta Lady!
Ever since youtube was created I've been searching this one.
HEARTS may be the biggest hit from Balin's album but Atlanta Lady is by far my very very favourite. I can even say is one of my all time favourite song.
It has a cool and groovy mood that I can't find in many songs. And remains me an unforgetable 81' summer in hometown Peru.

Marty Balin must not be confused with Simply Red frontman Mick Hucknall. I noticed a few years ago how identical their voices are.

yes, there are similarities, but the Simply Red singer is more nasal.
