I leave this post in honor of my father. He was a B-26 pilot, badly wounded on his 35th mission over Normandy 2 days after the invasion. He received the Purple Heart, and Distinguished Flying Cross with 2 Oak Clusters. They wanted to take his leg off for 2 years after the wound but he wouldn't let them. He was very brave, and reminded me more of John Wayne than any man I ever knew.
My Dad was a "Marauder Man" and very proud to have flown the Martin B-26. He flew out of Matching, England and then from Roye/Amy, France. He kept up with all the men he flew with for all these years and was fiercely proud of their service. Never told me much until the WWII 50th anniversary, when he gave me his documents and told me of all his memories. What a great plane this was - even though it was never fawned over like the heavies. It brought my Dad home alive.
My Dad was a Marauder pilot also. He flew 44 missions out of Belgium towards the end of the war. He didn't talk much about his service either until the 50th anniversary. He and his crew were shot down once but were picked up by some of Patton's men.
God bless those men, I've always been rather "sceptic" about Americans. But the bravery it took for these men to get in a big fat overloaded juicy target for the Germans, and return, often with heavy damage to both plane and crew. Being nothing but Flakbait, but then get back in and fly off the verry next day !!!! They say Fonzie is "cool" , now that's what I call being cool. Respect to all those aircrew men !!!!
How about a voiceover with some commentary? I understand the B-26 was like a bumblebee. Its wings were too short and it wasn't supposed to fly. But they just went ahead and flew anyway! Two powerful and well-tuned engines did the trick. A former work mate of mine flew B-26s in Southeast Asia during WWII. They were all brave guys.
