  • This is just the most awesome tune! I should be off learning Melodic Minor Modes, but I play this song everynight...

  • What song is this *excactly*? I want to buy the MP3, but the ones I find aren't quite the same - just Ella at the start, no trumpet solo, etc. This song is 3:36. The one from amazon mp3 seems different. Can you post a link?

  • dah fuck is paper town

  • @LVNEN And we appreciate that!

  • Where can I get an audio copy of this in mp3 format?

  • i don't know why but ella fitzgerald's voice always makes me cry...

  • Sometimes I almost cry thinking I was born 30yr too late to live through these musical times.

  • i just want a nice hunnybunny to break into places with ..

  • whats the instrument at the beginning?

  • @rolloversally - Its a piano at the very beginning, then Louis' trumpet comes in.

  • I think its the violin

  • As a child visiting Mobile Alabama at the age of 4 I met Louis Armstrong. I remember it well. He said "How you doing little man". I said fine sir. My Dad loved Mr. Armstrong and I have listen to this since. I miss my Dad. He died in 1973 at the age of 40. He is home in Heaven and that I do know. God Bless Dad. Your life was cut short but I remember the times you and I had. Love You Dad.

  • I want to find a honey and have this be our song

  • I can just picture Margo and Q dancing slowly under the stars at Sea World to this song. Beautiful song and wonderful book...

  • My parents song.

  • satchmo did have a lot of "problems" to find the right tune.... anyhow,,,, when this giant is not in line it souns million times better than if others sing correct :)

  • music

  • Now i want to break into Sea World and dance to this with someone.<3

  • @z0mbri27 Aww lol I love your comment. Subtle mention of the book, only really understood by those who have read it. Just...good comment. Thumbs up.

  • First heard this song on July 13, 1957 at the Seaside Dance Hall in Virginia Beach, VA. Danced to it with a young lady from Connecticut who I just met. We were married in 1958 and have been dancing to it ever since. She went to the "fairyland that no one else cound enter" on June 25, 2010. God do I miss her....

  • I first heard this song about 10yrs ago.... I bought a set of love and romance jazz CD's for my grandmother (which I ended up keeping for myself and bought her a new set) and I fell in love with this song immediately LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!

  • Ella And Satch!

  • I've got the 33 disc and it s same as here.

    michael

  • I heard about this song from "Paper Towns". Did anyone else?

  • @QuiGon8868 Would you care to foxtrot with me around a empty seal tank?

  • @QuiGon8868 Hearing this made me think back to that part in Paper Towns...it's like reading it over again with new lenses. Sets the tone so nicely.

  • @QuiGon8868 me too:) i looked it up immediately and fell in love with the song. So beautiful!

  • @QuiGon8868 I'm pretty sure John Green picked this song specifically because "Stars Fell On Alabama" is also the name of a Mountain Goats song, which is his favorite band, and also get a couple mentions in Paper Towns. Just a fun fact.

I actually didn't know that is was actually a jazz song haha, I only knew the Mountain Goats song. I thought he was just hiding a little shout out in the book. But why would he hide it? The book is dedicated to the Mountain Goats!

BTW, this song is awesome too.

  • I wish I could listen to this all day long...

  • Always love this song!!

  • what a tune, rendition. . .

  • I love Ella and Satch, however, why didn't they sing the verse? The moonlight and magnolias part? It would have been so much better.

  • @john9944 - Usually the 45rpm is a trimmed down version of the album cut. I've never heard the album that this song is from (assuming there is one) but it most likely contains an extended version which may have the "missing" verse you mentioned. Thanks for your comment!

  • @VinylNostalgia

There is an album, HMV just called Ella and Louis, but it's not extended on there.

It's a jazz standard, you're allowed to cut and play with it a little ;)

  • @john9944 This version follows the jazz fake book exactly.

  • Do not hate me--so glad JB is keeping this song alive....Heard it first from him.

  • This is a pretty version by Ella and Louie. ... But they can't compare to Doris Days' version

  • @TheStevecov man, that's like comparing a soap opera to Hamlet. That version's a sparkly show tune, these are two of america's greatest musicians expressing the depths of the human heart, soul, and experience. but whatever moves you I guess...

  • @TheLordoftheJazz not to mention the beautiful accompaniment of Oscar Peterson Ray brown, Herb Ellis, and Buddy Rich, gently framing Louis and Ella's poignant statement with the tune's shimmering harmony, and a groove straight out of the Earth itself

  • Amazing, this brought tears to my eyes.

  • Try and hear the Louis Armstrong and the all stars live at Carnegie Hall version. Jack Teagarden plays and sings, pure magic.

  • 1930´s jumento

  • marvelous!!!

  • love this !!!!

  • One of my fave versions of this song. I love Ella and Satch!

  • Nice. I love playing this song.
