  • I'm American and I agree- enough is enough. Our cable companies are overcharging us, too.

And everyone NEEDS local news, no question about it.

  • Rogers = CityTV

    Shaw = GlobalTV

CTV = Bell , oh sorry, they use to own them. :P

    CBC = Telus , lol

As you can see the tv and cable companies are either ripping themselves off or ripping you off.

  • Why are we blaming Cable and Satellite, who cares what their profits are its a service, the argument is we pay by choice, you don't like their high prices don't subscribe.

The real argument is LocalTV is failing and they want to force us to pay for them regardless if we watch or not,

Sat/Cable is forced to transmit LocalTV by the CRTC because LocalTV demanded it.

Extra revenue is made by LocalTV because of this extra coverage, they are making money from each other.

Give us a choice thats all.

  • Done be deceived by the "Big networks?"

Ya and trust companys like bell, telus and rogers hahahaha biggest load of shit i have ever heard

  • Shaw Cable now has 80% control of Global TV

  • Cable Companies are forced by law to provide Local TV to its Customers.

  • Wow... all bs stuff...

CRTC charges the Cable Networks. They dont want to pay THEIR own fees (about 3-4% of their total revenues). So they charge their consumers (us) to pay for them...

Videotron agreed on the charge, they have TVA. So, they charge us extra money (10$ / month) to us, but part of the money returns to videotron... This is completly stupid.

I'm trying to find a cheap cable isp with unlimited transferts and Ill pirate all the TV channels on internet stream. :) too bad for them!

  • Cable and Satellite have been getting a free ride for YEARS... making billions of dollars in profit by offering overpriced, sub par product... now they're getting called out on their bullshit business and look what they come up with... more weak shit like this. Passing the buck yet again... TYPICAL CORPORATE WHORES.

    Google "desperism"

  • This is bull shit!!!!

2 Billion in profit by Cable. For doing what? Cable closed their local stations down decades ago.

Here's a fact. You can CHECK this with the CRTC Yourself.

This is a negotiation between Cable and Networks. This is not Networks wanting to tax the Public, but to ask for programing fee that Cable gets for free. Cable calls it a TAX to fool stupid people. Don't be stupid. Or get use to CNN or FOX News. No local news is like screwing your own community!

  • OMG, you stole my words. This whole thing is about manipulation. They just believe we are all fools getting warmed up when we hear about a "TAX". Don't get fooled.

  • @hitgong

The networks don't give a crap about the local programming. Most of them except CBC are mostly re-distributing US programmes. CBC's programming isn't too good except the news, and who ever heard of Thunder Bay not getting CBC News Toronto?

  • FUCK THE USA!

  • So who made this video telling us to fight the "big networks"? Oh, the big monopoly cable and telco companies. Monopolies battling each other is so Canadian.

Cable is a fantastic business model. You get the content from the broadcasters for free, run some coax cable to houses and and then charge each household $40-100 a month. I'd love to start my own cable company, except the CRTC guarantees Rogers that there won't be have any competition.

Cancel cable. There's more on the net anyways.

  • I don't watch local TV... why should I be forced to subsidize it in order to get the channels I do watch?

  • SELL CBC!!

  • Cable & satellite companies pay for U.S. programs - they already charge us for Canadian programming - if this tax is imposed they will only pass it on to their subscribers - so who pays in the long run? Those who usually lose when major companies fight - the ones who keep them in business.

  • If this Fee/Tax is allowed to go through, it will set a precedent for future corporate businesses in Canada. By that I mean dont rule out the newspaper industry lobbying the federal government next to tax the internet to give them Corporate Welfaree also. If you think that cant happen, just look at what is happening already in Canada with T.V..

  • hasn't the precedent already been established for corporate business in Canada? Don't companies pay for a product before they resell it for a mark up? Wouldn't cable be following the established way of doing business by paying for the broadcast signals that they are already charging for? From what I understand the networks are just asking for the right to negotiate with the cable companies. What is the matter with a negotiation?

  • I have zero love for the Cable and Satellite companies as I know these greedy companies are also ripping me off to no end but ultimately any "Fee / Tax" is going to be passed on to me, the consumer and I refuse to pay anymore then what I am already being gouged. I'm fighting back this time and I'm refusing to pay "Corporate Welfare" to these "Broadcasters". By the way, where's my bailout?

  • This TV tax is called a tax by the big signal providers, namely Bell, Rogers, Tellus, Videotron and Shaw cable/satelitte company, not the local TV. The local news TV are asking these cable/satelite companies to fork the money $5.00 - $10.00 from their earnings to pay for the broadcast I'm already paying for. The local TV are not asking the people for a handout/ bailout. I'm subscribed with Bell satelitte EXpress Vu.

  • I will continue. For any amount that Bell will increase by subscription, I will cancel programming to the same or more amount per months. I recommend everyone to do the same to their signal providers, namely: Bell, Rogers, Shaw, Videotron, Tellus ect....

  • if these cable guys are so interested in Canada why did they go out and hire this American announcer for their spots? Us Canadian announcers not good enough for you? Shows how you feel about supporting Canadians.

  • HEY STOP THE TV TAX!

How come CHEK or NTV isn't mentioned in your ads? They are a part of Local TV Matters just as much as CTV or Global is.

  • Imagine that, my tax dollars from a proposed tax, going to help boost the profits of Private Broadcasters and already funded Public Broadcasting. I will told the C.R.T.C., that if this proposed tax goes through, I will cancel my cable subscription and I will never again pay another dime for Crappy Canadian T.V.. I HAVE HAD IT. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. STOP THIS INSANITY NOW !!!!!!!!

  • You may need to refer to a dictionary cause this isn't a tax.

Do you even understand what a tax is?

  • I have zero love for the Cable and Satellite companies as I know these greedy companies are also ripping me off to no end but ultimately any fee / tax is going to be passed on to me, the consumer and I refuse to pay anymore then what I am already being gouged. I'm fighting back this time and I'm refusing to pay "Corporate Welfare" to these "Private Broadcasters". If this tax passes, I'm going to cancel my cable and go total Black Market for my TV. By the way, where's my bailout?

  • Go ahead, but enjoy your time in jail.

  • My contempt for the C.R.T.C. and this current federal government is growing. How dare you try to steal more money out of my pockets like this. This is supposed to be a free market economy. If these private broadcasters can't make it on their own, then it's time to do what every other free market company in Canada has to do in these hard times and that is down size your company or close the damn doors.

  • Pooor poooor Rogers, Bell and Telus. You are so hard done by.

You guys need to stop complaining. Go compare what you charge, with what American companies charge their companies. You're stealing - Bell, Rogers and Telus!

  • Don't forget Shaw.
