As a master mariner and a pilot I can only say that this is a well executed manoeuver. Contrary to what most people think, ships with a conventional screw/propeller cannot be steered while going astern. The only way to maintain heading is to give kicks ahead to correct. Exactly what this guy was doing and very well, I might add.
Nothing wrong with that manouvre, although why didnt he just turn around? There was plenty of room at the end of the basin. Its nice to see someone thinking about what they are doing for a change.
lol, I do have to agree with most, he didn't actually do a bad job of backing up!!! and good corrections.. however perhaps during his tuition they should of told him which was the bow and which was aft lol
Most boats have a tendency to turn to one side or the other when you go into reverse. It's cause by the 'paddle wheel' effect of the propeller. If you get up a bit of speed the rudder becomes more effective.
Pleased to see these guys took it steady and got where they wanted without upsetting anyone or hitting anything!
this is most likely a single screw inboard, much harder to steer in reverse as opposed to a stern drive, outboard, or twin screw inboards.

Captain Schettino at the helm. Oh wait -- it can't be. He didn't hit rocks and then run away.

Cool little boat dude! I thought you did a good job backing up the boat considering it is an inboard, but haters gonna hate.
