Automatic scoring played a large part in the demise of bowling. Whereas people had to understand how to keep score thus provoking more thought into other aspects of the game, not anymore. Lane courtesies are rare because less thought overall is demanded. Today the BPAA has shunned the regulars that made up shift leagues in favor of movie-goers and miniature-golfers that reek havoc during Cosmic Bowling. The BPAA controlled USBC is the cause of all this. A letter of thanks won't come from me.
The left lane messed Mark up here. It was unfair to say that he made "foolish mistakes". He relies on his monster hook and it wasn't happening on that lane. Combine that with bowling a guy like Earl Anthony and you are at a great disadvantage.
@buyystocks Well a typical cranker definitely, most "crankers" learned to do that to take advantage of house conditions. Doesn't matter where they throw it as long as it is right and they start left. Against a cranker who is also very very accurate, it is a closer match. The greater accuracy of Earl is matched by the better pin carry of the slightly less accurate cranker.

I can remember my dad calling Earl a hipster-dufuss when he let his hair grow out. He used to have a flattop.
During his dominant stretch he was a machine. The way he bowled was all about accuracy.
