the salary cap only works because NRL isn't a world wide sport. If it was all the good players would leave for better money elsewhere and the NRL would be a rubbish competition. Also the clubs would go bust because they can't manage on their own.
Wow.. it must have been difficult to spot a tallent like Inglis when he was 16.. Storm just buy them in time..

David gallop listen to gus. he knows what he is talkin about.i say we have a premier league and a 2nd division and teams play each other twice maybe 10 to 12 teams in each division . but as you can see HE IS NOT LISTENING. we could have a brilliant set up going with teams from sunshine coast adalaide cairns . and they build a team . and if they dont have the money to buy a player they dont buy the player. You cant hold teams back because they cant devolop players. its making the game boring.
David gallop has got no idea how to make a good competition. we need half a dozen new teams and he is going to expand by two. what about the sunshine coast what about adelaide what about cairns what about hobart. this guy is a moron that is holding the game back. we need more teams maybe even a second division league one and league two. thats not to mention the 7 bidding teams. How to hold the game back . or even have a northern coference and a southern conference.
@Rafdaganga i agree 100 pecent get rid of the salary cap and make two divisions and if they cant manage there money they go and start again in the second division and build again. they sure no how to ruin the game for everyone. i am losing interest in the game because of the people holding it back.

Well said Gus. There is not a very good breeding ground for League in Melbourne as it is an AFL dominated. So they get these kids form interstate with potential and turn them into superstars! That should be rewarded, but instead Gallop and co make it impossible to hang onto them even though you have invested years on moulding them into the best in the business! The salary cap just doesn't work... Back to the drawing board!

Gould is a legend and I loved this, but Gallop, as much a cunt as he is, also has a fair point.
Of course in an ideal world teams would be teams, built on towns, cities, brotherhood and family. But if we did make the exception for Melbourne, or teams that create their own juniors, the comp would soon end up like the English premier league soccer.
The NRL is so competetive because the cap moves players around, like the NFL draft does for their competition

Say what you like about Gus but this is a man that knows and loves Rugby League. I've got so much time for this. Good on Gallop for coming on too. Best League in the world by hundred furlongs

And even when Gallop was owning him with the answer, he had to cut in and jump over the top with his dribbling shit. You see so many players leave clubs, whether they are youngsters who cannot be kept because otherwise their clubs would go over the cap, and then go to another side who reap the rewards of all the hard work that was done by the players previous club to make the said players into the stars that they are (for example, Thurston leaving the Bulldogs, and within two years cements his place as Australias Number 7).
Then you have the players who want just one more season in the game before they retire, but are released by clubs because they have brought through a younger replacement to take the position of the older player, and therefore dumping him on the proverbial Rugby League Scrapheap.
yeah, maybe they do deserve a pay-rise. but not if it means that they have to pay them illegally and then screw over the entire competition. i bet there are heaps of club like the storm who have grown talent, the only difference is, the other clubs had the integrity to send them away cos they didn't want to cheat. Bottom Line- Melbourne cheated, and as a result they have just made the last 4/5 years of the NRL a complete waste of time
You're a fucking joke David Gallop - You're a puppet for your corrupt News Ltd organisation and you're a fucking disgrace to your family and whatever friends you can keep.
Well said Gus, and David Gallop and News ltd - Get out of the game before you kill it completely.
what? so suddenly if you raise players, you should rig the salary cap? declining other clubs, ESPECIALLY sydney clubs of talent, compared to melbourne?
what do you want him to do? put an unlimited supply of money into the salary cap? send NRL to a complete fucking downfall?
GUS DOES HAVE A POINT, but what the fuck would you do right now if you were in davids shoes, you tell me that
@TheJamesJosh they were talking about some kind of compensation for a player thats been at a club for 4 yrs or more, i cant remember who came up with that i think it was bernie cullen. it sounded like a good idea that made sense
I'll tell you exactly what he should do, and it's of the model of the AFL with concessions. Look at Sydney, Brisbane etc who are able to do things that Victorian teams can't.
Look at the AFL - Horrible game, but the people running it are so superior of Gallop and his News Ltd drones it's not funny. Rugby League is the best game of all, but with these dickheads running it, and wankers like you posting this crap, then what hope does it have?
I never ever said the salary cap should be removed. What I am saying is that the salary cap should do the following - just as it does in the AFL. Reward club loyalty, protect players that the club has developed and finally as I said to you before (Not that I think you actually read responses) is implement salary cap concessions for clubs out of the traditional heartland. Look at how the AFL have treated the interstate clubs in the AFL, and look at how the AFL is taking over.
@Sportymale You nailed it right there man! While Demetriou is a bit of a capatilist, he knows how to sell the game and takes AFL another light year ahead with a massive TV rights deal which will probably see more League players get poached!
Even Super 15's and Super League are laughing at us at the moment. Time to hang up the boots Gallop!
Im on both sides. I agree with Gould, melbourne deserve to keep the players they developed from kids - The NRL needs to bring in some sort of loyalty system for players who play however many years at one club. But i also agree with Gallop - he has a really tough job.The cap should be raised but the cap is fair - if there was no cap teams such as Cronulla,Cowboys etc wouldnt be able to compete with teams such as Melbourne,Brisbane,Roosters,Souths
gould, if melbourne breaks the salary and they dont punish them, then what are other clubs gonna do? of course there gonna break the salary cap aswell. then the competition is going to go haywire.
if it wasnt for the salary cap the nrl would be like the english premier league only 2 teams actually hav a chance of winning every year in stead of this awesome competition we have now. GUS GOULD can go take his finger out of his ass and go fuck himself!
great video, I'm a Storm supporter, so im interested to know what is REALLY going on and has gone down already- found this great blog written by an insider yesterday, its explains the truth, ie, the stuff news ltd doesn't want us to know! check it out stormconfidential. wordpress. com
@MissAmandaFantastic gallop is a failure, yesterday's man. formerly news limited's man. now nobody's man. not up to the challenges the game faces. a product of the super league war and captive of the interests that drove it right down to the level of coaches and a range of super league cronies
Anyway, Gallop is a sophist. He should not be running the game. The fact that he is suggests to me that there is something else going on behind the scenes that the fans are all too apathetic or ill-informed to worry about. Perhaps something sinister - like maybe Rugby (which is the better game - admit it) is imposing its will through kickbacks to the administrators. Or maybe AFL (which is the worst game) is white anting the base to ensure its rise. There's something very fishy about all this
Funny thing is, Melbourne is not a team of greats, yet they are a great team. They know how to play as a team, defend as a team and win as a team. They follow there own game plan better then any other team in the whole competition and have the best mentality a team could have.
@teraen2 but by that rationale u are suggesting that they don't need their superstars to win. I agree with u but I think u missed a point that Melbourne is a champion team of champions.
Besides all that, i don't understand this salary cap thing. I can see the point, evening out the talent, but why don't they just raise the salary cap or just realise that footy was better when the perennials mixed with the juggernauts. It was more interesting and was always cyclical.
@1roncho gallop is a failure, yesterday's man. formerly news limited's man. now nobody's man. not up to the challenges the game faces. a product of the super league war and captive of the interests that drove it right down to the level of coaches and a range of super league cronies
i couldn't care less who crosses over i go 4 brisbane izzy is leaving i don't c it as the end of the world we'll get some1 else look at the bulldogs SBW walked out in 08 killed the club so they went out bought half our forward pack n some other good players n ran second had a great year. Players now days r very greedy n have no team spirit
I'm from Melbourne, I started going to Storm games when my AFL team was interstate. I must say how shocked I was to see what they were up against from Gallop and other people in NRL. Gus is the only person I have been able to find that seems to have any idea what would be good the game. Losing players and killing expansions just to ensure the worst run club is as good as the best. Make Gus your Ceo, expand and let teams keep there players or Soccer and AFL will demonstrate how it is done.Gus4CEO
im a huge doggies fan and we desrved it in 2002..and i feel sorry for the stormm, david galopp has never played a game in his life..the salary cap auditor is an ex-ROOSTER player? dont forgot mason?o meley? anasta? nate myles? they are worth big dollars but nobody wants to get the chooks and other clubs. goo the stormm i hope they can play for some points in 2010.
I don't really follow rugby league but i think the cap is a joke. PROFESSIONAL sport is about winning not being fair. Abolish the cap and stop the player drainage. The best competitions in the world don't have salary caps. Look at the English Premier League (EPL) the clubs with the least money rise the occasion when they play the rich ones and beat them. NOT make pathetic excuses about one club having more money than them and better players.
@jcarter888 Yh but without the salary cap, teams like pourtsmouth and hull could potentially collapse because they cant handle thier money, i think the cap probably needs to stay but it should be made to benefit teams who bring thier players through the ranks rather than buying them in.
*Clap clap* Great the storm raised some good players.
But saying it like Melbourne is the only club to ever build up strong players. Plenty have clubs have had their rookies become great players and those clubs have lost them to other clubs because they're playing by the rules.
What Gus is saying is that the Storm should be allowed to keep their stacked team because they made it. If that was a rule then there would be one or two supreme clubs. Where's the fun and passion when its not fair?
Big deal. We developed league champions, world champions, Origin champions and test champions and had to lose those p[layers due to the salary cap. Storm have nothing to bitch about. Play by the rules and there's no problem. Inglis has no integrity nor does that cheating scum of a club Melbourne.
What is wrong with what Gus said? After the way all the Daily-telegraph clowns were going on I thought he tried to hit him with a chair. Gus has a valid point, though it applies to all clubs not just the Storm!
phil is a pig. david is just fair to all clubs so one or two teams arnent continually the best. he criticises all things in nrl and is to lazy to go and work for them and change some decisions. e.g. refs, coaches and the nrl.
i am so happy im not married to gus he has to argue about everything. because you beleive it gus does not make it rite. the sooner channel 9 fucks you off the better the game will be. gus you are a has been and even then you wernt that good
Great! Great BIG cheats. Hope the taxman gets them all. Phil Gould obviously spent too much time with his head up somone's behind when playing scrum half. Pity the AFL didn't have the guts to hand similar penalties a few years ago.
the nrl just needs an annual national draft to even out young talent.... however cause they had that court ruling years ago regarding player movement it wont happen..... and the stacking of young talent at the top end clubs will forever occur as a result
Gus is just pissed cause hes a grumpy old man now and hes been talking up the storm for 5 years. Now he feels like a fool cause the party is over and everything he said is about the storm has been erased from history. storm is a methodical blah blah blah, what ever gus.
so what about their debut at storm, storm poached their players from other states, they go to storm for the promise of sucess. The broncos and sydneys western suburbs, how many players have these areas bread and given a start at the club then they take off for more $. Folou went to broncos for the love of brizzy not more $. Theres a lot more to it. Gus is in on it for shore, definately been punting for storm cause he knew they were 1up.
Im Queensland for life but I have to admit Gus Gould is one of the smartest men in Rugby League. He speaks his mind and says it as it is. Onya GUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
gus gould annoys the shit out of me he might of said somethin half decent for once but he is a cock head he goes on and on about bull shit he is the worst commentator in league and he is a hipocrit i dont know if thats spelt properly but yea he is a cock
I cant stand Gus Gould..everything he says is the "be all and end all". The way he is defending the salary cap breach a.k.a cheating.(You may not like the rules..but it for everyone, break it and you get punished), this makes me wonder if Gould has anything to worry about with the Roosters. Now the storm have aready played a handful of games this year using a unfair player roster based on the salary cap...so I think it is fair to all remaining teams, Storm be deducted there points!!!
@xMaximumPowerx If storm didnt break the rules than most of the awesome superstars from there wouldnt even be playing nrl anymore. It was still unfair that they went four years with an illegal team but the whole salary cap rule is fucked. Clubs need to be rewarded for rasing young talent!
exactly!!!!........ and we still had to release a massive amount of players anyways...
they just want to even out the amount of talent melbourne can develop across the league.. than the overall talent....... also the majority of teams would be doing it as well obviously not to the extreme melbourne did but third party deals are abundant, even in the AFL, like 160 deals...... and to think it wouldnt be happening at your team in the NRL is just plain ignorant
Whats more important, loosing players, which can be replaced mind you, or loosing clubs? In a perfect world, sure it would be great to pay as much as you like for players, but at the end of the day only a very select few clubs could do this, I know i wouldnt follow the game as strongly if my club folded, but if my favourite player went to a rival code, id get over it, because my club is still in the comp already producing another favourite player.
This is total bullshit. Blind Freddie could see that Greg Inglis was going to be a champion. All the Storm did was throw a heap of money at him as a kid. Same deal for Folau, a Parramatta junior I believe. Brett White I think was a dragons junior ?. If the salary cap was $5 million, the Storm would have spent $6 million. If it was $6 million, they would have spent 7. You get the picture They had an unfair advantage over the rest of the competition because they cheated & got what they deserved.
@danielPbarton pfffffffffft our only unfair advantage is that even the heart of rugby league can't develop and detect the talent that melbourne can...... so this results in us losing the stars that we develop and just makes it easy pickings for nsw and qld teams can take them away.
@danielPbarton, having good talent is the only advantage Melbourne had over the competition, they haven't gone out and bought players for a while, they established a football team, building this side, who eventually became one of the best NRL teams of all time. Personally i don't see a problem in it because i no that most of those Melbourne players would play to the best of their ability weather they got $100 000 or $1 000 000.
Gus: "You and your administration just don't understand the game at all"
Gallop: Cough, choke, splutter...
Gallop you are a merkin of thie highest order. You've done nothing in over 10 years other than just cough up the same ineptitude time and time again. Can we please get a decent CEO...please.
Gallup is totally bereft of any ideas! Take the emotion from the Storm (there have been 69 prior breaches of the salary cap), Gallup's (non) answer to Gould's question: "How do we stop this from happening again?" Would have brought a tear of admiration to the eye of any politician. Gallup should do the honourable thing and hand the stewardship of the game over to somebody that understands its roots and cares about its longevity and vitality.
I'm a Dragons fan and we've had to let players go that we've developed from Junior level. In fact we got fined on salary cap issues because so many of our juniors had been picked for Origin or Tests so they now had a higher base level.
It's not about the salary cap. The cap isn't the greatest but it does make the competition even. We don't have teams like Richmond in the AFL that gets thumped each week.
The rules are put in place and Storm broke them. It's not great but it's the facts
@hea0006 The Storm didn't go out and buy players from other clubs like the Dragons did ( Jeremy Smith from Storm ) we developed our players and then let them go because of salary caps eg. Folou,Johnson King, Turner Newton, Cross, Cross, etc, but what Gallop wants is to break the Smith Slater Inglis Cronk combination to help other Sydney clubs. Anyway this year the grand final will be 2nd. rate between two second class teams.....GO STORM
hi seedyrom247, i was down in melbourne supporiting the storm til this evening and missed this episode of TSFS. if you have it, is it possible to get the whole episode off you? download or something? as a die hard storm fan id really like to watch the whole show.hope its possible.thank you

I think what they should do with the Salary Cap is:
For homegrown talent: Something like 25% of their salary is recorded in the Cap.
For loyal players, only 50% is recorded on the Cap.

LOL, i think you should shut the fuck up.
you wouldn't want to have daves job.
what? so suddenly if you raise players, you should rig the salary cap? declining other clubs, ESPECIALLY sydney clubs of talent, compared to melbourne?
what do you want him to do? put an unlimited supply of money into the salary cap? send NRL to a complete fucking downfall?
GUS DOES HAVE A POINT, but what the fuck would you do right now if you were in davids shoes, you tell me that
TheJamesJosh 1 year ago
@TheJamesJosh they were talking about some kind of compensation for a player thats been at a club for 4 yrs or more, i cant remember who came up with that i think it was bernie cullen. it sounded like a good idea that made sense
qmelian 1 year ago
@TheJamesJosh
Sportymale 1 year ago
@Sportymale
what then? sack the salary cap?
PLEASE tell me what you would do if you were in daves job. please. right this second
TheJamesJosh 1 year ago
@TheJamesJosh
Sportymale 1 year ago
@Sportymale You nailed it right there man! While Demetriou is a bit of a capatilist, he knows how to sell the game and takes AFL another light year ahead with a massive TV rights deal which will probably see more League players get poached!
Even Super 15's and Super League are laughing at us at the moment. Time to hang up the boots Gallop!

Im on both sides. I agree with Gould, melbourne deserve to keep the players they developed from kids - The NRL needs to bring in some sort of loyalty system for players who play however many years at one club. But i also agree with Gallop - he has a really tough job.The cap should be raised but the cap is fair - if there was no cap teams such as Cronulla,Cowboys etc wouldnt be able to compete with teams such as Melbourne,Brisbane,Roosters,Souths

draconianrush 1 year ago
Anyway, Gallop is a sophist. He should not be running the game. The fact that he is suggests to me that there is something else going on behind the scenes that the fans are all too apathetic or ill-informed to worry about. Perhaps something sinister - like maybe Rugby (which is the better game - admit it) is imposing its will through kickbacks to the administrators. Or maybe AFL (which is the worst game) is white anting the base to ensure its rise. There's something very fishy about all this
Pigroota 1 year ago
Funny thing is, Melbourne is not a team of greats, yet they are a great team. They know how to play as a team, defend as a team and win as a team. They follow there own game plan better then any other team in the whole competition and have the best mentality a team could have.
teraen2 1 year ago
@teraen2 but by that rationale u are suggesting that they don't need their superstars to win. I agree with u but I think u missed a point that Melbourne is a champion team of champions.
Besides all that, i don't understand this salary cap thing. I can see the point, evening out the talent, but why don't they just raise the salary cap or just realise that footy was better when the perennials mixed with the juggernauts. It was more interesting and was always cyclical.

NOT make pathetic excuses about one club having more money than them and better players.
jcarter888 1 year ago
@jcarter888 Yh but without the salary cap, teams like pourtsmouth and hull could potentially collapse because they cant handle thier money, i think the cap probably needs to stay but it should be made to benefit teams who bring thier players through the ranks rather than buying them in.
Orbi90 1 year ago
*Clap clap* Great the storm raised some good players.
But saying it like Melbourne is the only club to ever build up strong players. Plenty have clubs have had their rookies become great players and those clubs have lost them to other clubs because they're playing by the rules.
What Gus is saying is that the Storm should be allowed to keep their stacked team because they made it. If that was a rule then there would be one or two supreme clubs. Where's the fun and passion when its not fair?

so what about their debut at storm, storm poached their players from other states, they go to storm for the promise of sucess. The broncos and sydneys western suburbs, how many players have these areas bread and given a start at the club then they take off for more $. Folou went to broncos for the love of brizzy not more $. Theres a lot more to it. Gus is in on it for shore, definately been punting for storm cause he knew they were 1up.

I cant stand Gus Gould..everything he says is the "be all and end all". The way he is defending the salary cap breach a.k.a cheating.(You may not like the rules..but it for everyone, break it and you get punished), this makes me wonder if Gould has anything to worry about with the Roosters. Now the storm have aready played a handful of games this year using a unfair player roster based on the salary cap...so I think it is fair to all remaining teams, Storm be deducted there points!!!

xMaximumPowerx 1 year ago
@xMaximumPowerx If storm didnt break the rules than most of the awesome superstars from there wouldnt even be playing nrl anymore. It was still unfair that they went four years with an illegal team but the whole salary cap rule is fucked. Clubs need to be rewarded for rasing young talent!
WINSLOVE1 1 year ago
Cameron Smith is a Logan Brother Junior. Billy Slater debut was for Brisbane Norths in First Grade!!
InigoMontoya24 1 year ago
exactly!!!!........ and we still had to release a massive amount of players anyways...
they just want to even out the amount of talent melbourne can develop across the league.. than the overall talent....... also the majority of teams would be doing it as well obviously not to the extreme melbourne did but third party deals are abundant, even in the AFL, like 160 deals...... and to think it wouldnt be happening at your team in the NRL is just plain ignorant
muteprintAWS 1 year ago
Whats more important, loosing players, which can be replaced mind you, or loosing clubs? In a perfect world, sure it would be great to pay as much as you like for players, but at the end of the day only a very select few clubs could do this, I know i wouldnt follow the game as strongly if my club folded, but if my favourite player went to a rival code, id get over it, because my club is still in the comp already producing another favourite player.
go26t 1 year ago
This is total bullshit. Blind Freddie could see that Greg Inglis was going to be a champion. All the Storm did was throw a heap of money at him as a kid. Same deal for Folau, a Parramatta junior I believe. Brett White I think was a dragons junior ?. If the salary cap was $5 million, the Storm would have spent $6 million. If it was $6 million, they would have spent 7. You get the picture They had an unfair advantage over the rest of the competition because they cheated & got what they deserved.
danielPbarton 1 year ago
@danielPbarton pfffffffffft our only unfair advantage is that even the heart of rugby league can't develop and detect the talent that melbourne can...... so this results in us losing the stars that we develop and just makes it easy pickings for nsw and qld teams can take them away.
muteprintAWS 1 year ago
@muteprintAWS YES that's your only advantage DICKHEAD.
The $1.7 million extra that you spent on players was no advantage at all.
ha ha that is fucking funny
danielPbarton 1 year ago
@danielPbarton, having good talent is the only advantage Melbourne had over the competition, they haven't gone out and bought players for a while, they established a football team, building this side, who eventually became one of the best NRL teams of all time. Personally i don't see a problem in it because i no that most of those Melbourne players would play to the best of their ability weather they got $100 000 or $1 000 000.

It's not great but it's the facts
hea0006 1 year ago
@hea0006
The AFL has a salary cap, too. For the little it's helping Richmond atm.
macsrule101 1 year ago
@hea0006 The Storm didn't go out and buy players from other clubs like the Dragons did ( Jeremy Smith from Storm ) we developed our players and then let them go because of salary caps eg. Folou,Johnson King, Turner Newton, Cross, Cross, etc, but what Gallop wants is to break the Smith Slater Inglis Cronk combination to help other Sydney clubs. Anyway this year the grand final will be 2nd. rate between two second class teams.....GO STORM
