I personally have a copy of Ali Shariati's book, a collection of his speeches in essay form, called "Man and Islam". It was printed by the University of Mashad, and was typed originally by one Charlene Taheri. It was mailed to me direct from Iran in early 1983. It was in soft binding, and the binding has since fallen apart, so that I have to hold it together as I read it, but it still holds merit for me as I read it over.
@arashzabeti I read one of his biography and I'm still question my self that how he died . Isn't it very suspicious ? I just can't deny the fact that Savak and Shah were always against him and they were behind his brutal murder.
@gumnaam1000 khamenei is not muslim remember that ali shariati is muslim. how wonderful this man is. shia and sunni are brothers toghether we wont fall
@loveandadherence he lies, changes islam, and kills innocent people. he is giving islam a horrible name. if shariati was the leader, iran would be heaven. allahu akbar
You are angry and you are deluded. This is not good for you. Perhaps you need to see your shrink again. I am sure he/she can help you. You can overcome.

God bless his great soul. Most of his ideas are relevant today as they were before. As an example, he wrote in late 1960s that revolution in a country whose people are not developed intellectually and socially will lead to tragedy. This is exactly what happened in the aftermath of 1979 Iranian revolution.
there is a picture of Ali Shariati in many Iranian homes..just as russians put up lenin's picture, jus as iranians put up Khoemini's..he should not be forgotten..we love Shariati
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Dr. Shariati also had a very poor & convoluted view of Socialism. He had read somethings about it at his courses at Sorbonne but as he was not a true intellectual, in the western tradition and concept of what an intellectual is, Dr. Shariati had attempted to give Islam a modern look, albeit via a distorted view and understanding of Socialism.
I personally believe that Shariati purposely attempted not to be an "intellectual in the western tradition." He just tried to learn what Islam was in the heart and mind of its early leaders and followers and introduce that to the people of his own time.
@MehdiSharif I personally believe that people who saw him with this perspective just couldn't grasp the great ideas of such a giant thinker. I feel sorry for you since the thinking "islam a modern look" and "western tradition" are itself rubbish.
In "Fatima is Fatima," (Fateme Fateme hast) Shariati writes that clerics are by profession fault-less & ethical... And that just because they are clerics, representing ethical behavior & morality, they can never be corrupt!
What non-sense!
As history has proven in Iran in the past 30 years,
& as it had proved in the Europe's middle ages,
no other sector of a society is more corruptible
& has a higher capacity for corruption than clerics. Shariati, a sociologist, should've known better!
Dr. Shariati was one of the biggest critics of clerics in Islam. He even believed and stated that in Islam, in contrast to most other religions, there is no such thing as official clerics and clergy. Of course, he was an advocate of "ulamaa," religious scientists, who he believed are completely distinct from clerics. Thirty years earlier than him, even his father was among critics of clergymen. Although his father had clerical education, he never wore the official dress of clerics.
I recall many classmates for whom the events of early 1978 in Iran was a surprise. Then, in the course of 1978, these became "revolutionaries," but still holding very weak views politically. Some became "Marxists" without having read even one paragraph from any of Marx's writings. Some had read only second-hand material on Marxism: what somebody in Europe wrote about Marxism, translated by an Iranian, albeit poorly & full of errors, & my comrades read it and overnight became "Marxist."
You are so right arashzabeti, Just by reading MehdiSharif's comment I could tell that he has barely read ANYTHING of Shariati's work. He was amongst the first people to criticize Allama Baqir Al-Majlisi and Ibn Sina and declared them to be Useless when it came to Reform of society. And in so many of his works mentions..again and again that "there is no such thing as official clerics and clergy" as you mentioned.
Some read a couple of books by "Dr." Shariati, & became Socialist Muslims. These had no inkling what the forefathers of Socialism had written about it & how they had defined & framed the concepts of Socialism. Nor did they ever read the Koran in Farsi.
MehdiSharif, get somebody to proofread what ever you wanna post, your English sucks, you have to put"the" before"Sorbonne".thus, you should say the Sorbonne.
You are making a big assumption. How and on what basis do you think that either I or any other critic of Shariati have not read his books "completely?" I & my father did go to Hosseinieh Ershad during 1351 to 1354. I first began reading Shariati's writing in 1976 when I came to United States for my university education and read much of his work during the priod of 1976 to 1980.
Your Narrative just seems to prove my point, but maybe you've forgotten a lot since the last time you've read anything was 30 years ago.
In every major book for Shariati he mentions the corruptibility of the clerics of any Religion, yet you seem to have missed that. Nor did I see in any of his books calling on people to become socialists.

There are a number of books both about Shariati and by Shariati in English. You can find most of them by searching for "Ali Shariati" in Amazon web site. The most popular text about Shariati in English, as mentioned by lbnco, "An Islamic Utopian" by Ali Rahnema. The most popular text by Shariati in English is "Hajj: Reflections on Its Rituals." It is the most read book, before going to Hajj, by North American Muslims.
BROTHER! Yes, brother; I am from Iran. I agree that the Iranian government did no good to Dr. Shariati. They put him in prison a number of times. He spent about three years of his short life in jail at the time of the Shah. However, most people, and especially university students who knew him, supported him wholeheartedly. He was in love of people, and people supported him enthusiastically. In addition, in spite of your assertion, Dr. Shariati did almost all of his works in Iran.

It seemed that his reading of Ali Shariati was myopic, since what he claims about Shariati just isn't factually right.
What makes it even more myopic is that he bases on something he read 30 years ago. It's really absurd.
