The professional association, now the WPCA, then affiliated with the rodeo association, was in an ugly labor dispute to try to even come back to the stampede. They ended up losing that fight and the amateur northern association drivers now the CPCA, were invited to compete in their place.

Yes the song mentions Calgary but that is only because the stampede is where it started in 1923 and it's grown all across western canada and at one point, in the united states

This is in Red Deer, not Calgary... and the term "half mile of hell" doesn't mean that the track is exactly one half of a mile, but roughly so.
