With all the bottled anaesthetic gas available in the hospital, surely Diane could have chosen something more convenient and released that. Colourless, odourless ... that's have done the trick and they'd both have been knocked out before they knew it.

It would have been better if the villain ate a whole grain sandwich filled with beans, brocolli, eggs, limburgher cheese and lost of cabbage followed with Mexican tap water. Now that results in deadly gas to everyone but the consumer of the sandwich, but it is silent.
