Dominant in western culture, yes, an empire? Fuck no. Anyhow, this is the result when an otherwise brilliant comedian intreprits history.. could he be sarcastic? Oh yes..
@WhiteTheTruth ^^just like the romans. "military power"^^haha until a small german tribe arrived....
do you know that there are some billion chines and just a few million uneducated americans who thing they live in democracy? the chines know that they don't. at least...
They don't do it directly, no, they just invade other countries and hand them over to American corporations in the form of no-bid contracts. The difference between America and Rome is that only a portion of America's ruling elite are in the government.
What do you call CIA funded coups? What do you call oil wars? What do you call McDonalds' in every country of the world? If that isn't an economic empire, then the Romans were isolationists.
Yes, America does try to expand, but it's not direct, it's more...parasitic. Instead of coming in and telling everybody to leave or they die, they just monopolize the media, and export all their major chainstores and basicaly attempt to americanize other countries...
Probably, as I said, Sardonac understands the realistic (a term from political science) model of politics. Capital for example, is a deeper power structure, that leads "intelligent agents" (who are mostly unaware that they are as much situational as dispositional characters) in a certain way. You accused him of being a conspiracy nut, but conspiracy nuts usually have a personified view of politics. The "ruling elite", or whatever, to them, represent a singular ego; everything is intentional.
And you are very wrong to think that Roman empire "directly" (directly has no meaning when it must necesarily mean advice and reward/punishment). The US gives advice, and they back it up with a stick. The same way romans did. Actually, the same way any empire does. Yes, Russia was an empire, and still is today. China as well, and EU is a... smallish empire. India might become one too. Empires have spheres of influence. Would you deny the US has that? Never mind the culture; though that too.
Eum... Yea, they're an Empire. United States doesn't respect the sovereignty of other nations; hence empire. You'll notice that they dream of Europe (during CW) and now of Latin America, as buffer states, into which they can interfere at will. There's an interesting book called Empire, by Negri, Hardt, which speaks about a single empire. It's not conspiracy if Sardonac understands the deeper structures of power (capital) that cannot be directly observed, but influence intelligent agents to act.
America is no more an empire than modern Japan is an empire, it has a lot of international business interests but it does not occupy whole continents enforcing their own currency, laws and justice.
Take Iraq, that would have been impossible without international support and encouraging democratic reforms.
BTW, vomitoriums never existed in Roman times, they were a fanciful invention of Victorian historians. Also the Romans did not salute hand on heart but right hand raised like a Nazi salute.
Yes, passages are *called* vomitoriums but they were not for vomiting in as not a shred of evidence supports that they were used for vomiting. The myth comes from how nowadays "vomit" means purely the ejection of stomach contents as when the word was coined it had a broader definition similar to "evacuation".
USA is no more an empire than the European Union is an empire and much less an so than the USSR or British Empire ever were. American Imperialism is an old concoction from commy propaganda
Eddie didn't say they were for vomiting, and neither did I.
The US has by far the greatest cultural and political hegemony in the world. It's modern form of imperium that stretches far into other nations is easily comparable tot he Roman Empire.
And that's why he said you're the "new Roman Empire" not "The Roman Empire." And in terms of influence and hegemonic power the US has definitely surpassed the Roman Empire.
What the feck do you mean; "YOU'RE the new Roman empire". I'm English, you twat!
It's just that unlike my ex-colonial cousins, we Brits don't tolerate such blatant bollocks about other countries.
You may still share our monarch but you don't share any of our great British scepticism. At least not any more. Are you really so nationalistic to think I would only defend a country I'm a citizen of?
Your last comment is repeating the same old commie propaganda that even the Russians have dropped.
He was speaking to an American audience, I quoted verbatim. As yet you have only stated my comments are propaganda, and have failed to state WHY the American hegemony is not comparable to an empire.
I'm saying the entire idea of American Imperialism was dreamt up by communist propagandists to justify their own imperialistic expansion under the guise of socialism.
You must have your head up your own arse to think America has cultural hegemony, ever heard of bollywood? In general USA cannot be a true hegemony as the EU or China or so many other powers prevent US having complete influence, which blows the theory of hegemonic control out of the water.
American Imperialism to justify the Iron Curtain? Absurd.
Bollywood = name derived from hollywood = equating of film production and Hollywood = cultural hegemony.
Of course the United States does not have a complete hegemony, even the Romans didn't, but politically they can sway other countries in much the same way as the Romans. And the apotheosis of American culture is one of the leading reasons for Chinese industrialization.
"apotheosis of American culture is one of the leading reasons for Chinese industrialization"
You're implying that China has been part of this mythical American Empire ever since before and all the way through Communism? What utter bollocks!
There is virtually no element of Bollywood that could be inspired from America, it is ENTIRELY culturally distinct. The name is used by outsiders, to Indians it is just cinema.
One Roman Oligarchy DIRECTLY ruled 1000s of cultures around the Mediterranean.
A modern empire that you need an anthropology course to realise it even exists is not an empire, it is a figment of imagination.
How the hell would anthropology show Bollywood is a "hegemonic device of the American Imperialism used to control the masses of South Asia"? Which would be the only way that American Imperialism could work.
Pseudo-intellectual bullshit if you ask me. Bugger off and take your tin foil helmet and conspiracy theories with you to spare us all your rambling nonsense.
Conscious and inadvertent control are very different things. That's EXACTLY what I'm talking about and EXACTLY the thing you don't seem to understand.
Your little tale gets more extraordinary and fantastical by every reply.
So "inadvertent control" would mean with absolutely no collusion or intention those *Evil Imperialist Americans* miraculously and totally spontaneously affect Bollywood in minute and imperceptible ways that somehow turn an audience of over 1 billion into effective slaves of their manipulative and exploitative will.

What I mean is that with the assurance that nothing lasts forever, IF a government is corrupt it will eventually be reshaped or destroyed. Well, I respect the fact that you didn't resort to name calling. However, you said that it makes you feel safe and good inside that the United States will fall, which will cause deaths, war, and poverty unto millions of the common man. When that happens, what do you think the rich will do? Help? When America falls, the rich and politicians will bail out, leaving the common man to fend for themselves. It should give you a cold and uneasy feeling. But I agree that the US is going the way of Rome.

Well, we can agree on that. Hey, maybe I was a bit too brash in my assumptions. People have off days, and of course they wish for things they would never want. I just don't understand people who actually wish for bad things to happen to good people. It's unfortunate that the majority of people are peaceful, like you and me. You're entirely wrong. "Empire" has many connotations, including a massive cultural and political hegemony - something the United States has.
Iraq wasn't support as much as going along with it for many other countries.
Lastly, vomitoriums were used in Roman times and have been found in Cumae, Antioch, and other places.
