@Wafflepudding Then we'll kill them.... Though to meet a less advanced race would mean we made it to space so by that time our human nature might change. But if our nature is the same as it is now or still very similar then we will slowly kill them off for access to resources.
@GhostInTheShell29 Time doesn't really mean much, I mean could an army of say 1000 from France in say 800 defeat and an army from Ancient Rome also of 1000 strength? It just matters how many advancements took place during that time, it doesn't really take into account how many conflicts there were how their worlds were. Not that disasters means technology goes backwards or stops, the black death caused a shortage of writers so someone thought up the Printing Press for example.
@TheDirtysouthfan 200 Spaniards brought down an empire of over 4 million people. Technological superiority is massively decisive in war. Technology often does go backwards with some disasters. Europeans had more technology during roman times, then they did again until the renaissance. Indoor plumbing, architecture ship building, roads, bridges, poetry, plays music. Technology and culture often fall after major disasters.
No. 200 Spaniards used massive internal division amongst the south american natives (and a bit of inadvertent biological warfare; smallpox killed more Aztecs than the Spaniards and their native allies did) to take apart an empire that was already at the brink.
@Magni56 Oh wasn't talking about Cortez, meant when they took down the Incan empire. Though the Aztecs a good example as well though not nearly as powerful. They used allies of course for both, but they got those allies by convincing them that they could win with their support. I don't believe smallpox was a big factor until after the war.. though i could be mistaken on that. But still eitherway technology played a huge role. As they couldn't pierce the Spaniards armor.
Not a big factor? Agian, smallpox racked up a higher death count all throughout the whole episode. The Conquistadors never came even close to matching that kill rate. And they tribes they allied with were already at war with the Aztecs/Inkas. THere wa sno convincing necessary beyond "The enemy of my enemy..."
@Magni56 Ok ok, yes you do have valid points. Not the best thought out example as their were many other contributing factors besides just technology. So i'll go with a hypothetical example. Send a modern day military unit back in time to before rifling was invented... Literally the only thing that would stop them would be the limitted amount of ammo they took back with them.
Except not, given that said modern unit would still be far too small to get anything done and would be murdered by attrittion and guerilla resistance.
@Magni56 One Mark 19 repeating grenade launcher. VS an army of 10k people in the open... The mark 19 would win. Ok fine final example. World War II the polish lancers vs the german tanks. Though lancers were once a powerful military force, it wouldn't have mattered if poland had a million lancers or only a handful, as the german tanks came equipped with machine guns. Remember seeing old footage of it.. always felt bad for the horses. Everything was just mowed down.
Nope. That Mark19 would run out of ammo or break down long before. Also, that's not how numbers and attrittion work on the strategic scale. War doesn't just consist of the opposing forces lining up and having a go at each other.
@Magni56 I don't see why you feel the need to constantly try and fail at nitpicking what i'm saying... War did consist of lining up and attacking eachother, was that way when it was melee weapons and bows, as well as gunpowder weapons as well. It wasn't till WWII that large wars were no longer fought in neat lines.
break down long before once? firing even a single time? 100 rounds could easily take out over 1000 people.
@GhostInTheShell29 .......What? That's not what I'm saying, I'm saying it only matters how many advancements took place in the time in between. My point being though was that warfare hadn't advanced much since the Ancient Romans by 800 and that a Roman legion could probably take on a English or French army of equal size. Of course with Spaniards vs. Aztecs yes warfare had advanced too much for them and they were easily defeated because in the time Spaniards advanced more.
@TheDirtysouthfan Speaking the truth here. Romans had superior logistics, men were trained better, better equipment, etc. They'd destroy any army until much more modern eras.
@GhostInTheShell29 I think it's amusing how everyone thinks aliens will be more advanced than us if they exist. Why not us? We went from first flight to spaceflight within 60 years. That's fast. A huge change in tech.
@GortonMichael If they are less advanced then us, we will only meet them once we take to the stars. At least hundreds if not thousands of years from now.
If we meet anyone before that its because they came to earth. So they'd be more advanced.
I was disappointed when this wonder was replaced by the Internet Wonder in Civ3. So its the Space Age that is replaced by the Information Age? 50% science output still = Space Race!
Just imagine us encountering a planet of friendly and advanced extraterrestrials. The two species united, surely this would bring benefit to both. Maybe we can give them some technology and they can give some of theirs. Perhaps we can even work together to discover even more aliens. Or if they were hostile, all of humanity united even with their differences in defence and survival of the human race.
aliens are real...look, googels of stars out there, billions with planets orbiting, millions with the right conditions, and thousands with intellegint life, and problably hundreds more advanced than us humans..we are not alone...if we were, then that would be creepy
Honestly I agree with the theory that Aliens exist.
People always think that ''It's impossible for creatures like that to exist'' which is just stupid, cause a place like the universe which is as big as it can get, can have anything!.. Seriously!!.. There are probably hundreds and thousands of planets around, we just haven't advanced far enough to see them ourselves...
Geez and the only information they accept about aliens that they're ugly and creepy AND HOSTILE.. That's just stupid.
I loved civ 2...but the wonder movies scared the shit outta me many times. Nothing like Alpha Centauri thought. First and only "Turn based Horror simulation" ever.
Civilization 2 is such an amazing game , I still play for kicks and it's incredible fun. I almost always choose Fundementalism as my form of government , because if you have enough cities , which I always do , (Spammed cities in the start of the game) it is an insane form of government. 500G revenue per turn and 8 turns to finish research. I had so much money , I bought world wonders =L
@DEPTrooper i dont think the bonus of the Seti Wonder was the metting with aliens, but the huge effort and technological development that was put in use for that
i love this game but the fing that annoyed was how far the units cud go without being destroyed because of the supply thing ps has the best diplomacy on any game
True, thats the one HUGE improvement implemented in the new game. It made it an entirely diffrent game. Its amazing that the Civ franchise manages to reinvent itself brilliantly every time. Too bad MOO couldn't keep up.
The Civ II videos rock! They had a great influence on my interests as a kid. Early 3D graphics were very rarely as good as the other 2D (sprite?) graphics, IMO.
Define "Alien"
philyeaglesfan16 1 year ago
Any civilization we meet near term would be far more advanced then us. So we'd have to hope they weren't hostile.
Compare in human history 100 years of technological difference how much military advantage that gives.
1939 germany vs a 1839 world? There'd be no stopping it.
Modern day America vs 1911 world.
Now imagine a 1000 year difference or 10,000 year difference. If Aliens for whatever reason want us dead, then we'll just die.
