i remember watching nge when i was in high school (around 2003 - 2004). My local tv station (TransTV) aired it at 12AM!!

One time, my mother awaken and asked me what was i watching at this hour, i answered "world rally". Because my family is rather conservative about this kind of thing. They think cartoon is for small children, and they can't differentiate between this and spongebob.

Since then, i fall in love to anime, but NGE will always be my no.1 anime. I even prefer it over the rebuild.

I don't think there could have been a better way to end an episode of Neon Genesis Evangelion than this. "Instant" nostalgia of early childhood every single time I see/hear it.

There was a time when great cartoons/animes were on TV, which subliminally taught lessons or had deeper contextual meanings. It really saddens me to think that children nowadays really don't have much of an opportunity to grow up with shows like this without the aid of the internet. I'm just glad I got to enjoy it.

@GuitarExplicit i was lucky to live in mexico where this anime was aired around 1995 in one of the best anime channels called locomotion .. we can say i was blessed i was about 7 didnt really get the show that much but something about it trigger my deepest thoughts and it left something inside me .. thanks to shows like this am the person i am now .. am 23 and i still love this song and everytime i hear it i remember those good days when i used to stay up late watching this amazing masterpiece

@GuitarExplicit and you're not alone in feeling like this.. I'm not saying that there is not any one good anime nowadays that have deeper meaning like this one, it still have, but I have to kinda agree (even many of my friends & cousin also agree) that anime these days too often only emphasize on the 'CG/image orgasm' , so to speak, than the STORY, concept itself...which should be the most important thing in anime/manga.

Whenever I hear any version of this song it always makes me think of this version. It always gave me a sense of sadness and death as aposed to love like it was originally meant. I guess Evangelion was just that good at making you feel for the characters emotionally and it is kind of haunting being a kid like I was and seeing the characters die. Very epic anime but at the same time. Very upsetting.

I've always appreciated this ending. The animation is focused more on ambiance rather than style, and it's so simple! That only further supports how timeless this arrangement of an already timeless standard tune is.

Yes it is a Sinatra song, and I think they used an American song because it just went with the mood better, it was more poetic, stuff like that, I can definitely say that some lame J pop here would have left something to be desired.

I can't agree more. It might sound cheesy, but I can't think of any other anime that makes me feel so much emotions and so hard as evangelion. Not that I am an otaku, haven't seen that many animes.

I'm not an otaku either, they get too attached. I was at a pretty young age at the time 13yrs old 1998 so it had strong effect. What I loved was that the characters were so realistic. The show also helped me appreciate the little things in life abit more and i also became more mature by series end. Hearing this music and seeing this image reminds me of those times like a rush!!

Evangelion is a very intelligent anime that can be translated with so much symbolism, both religiously and scientifically. For instance, the AT field protecting the evangelion?
