  • Thanks for the review, I was interested in giving it a crack and even with the negative view It gave a good insight into the game.

  • Hey could anyone help me with a clarification? :)

Are the battles in Crusader Kings based on some sort of randomness like (Europa unverisalis 3).

Or is it like battles in hearts of iron, where the battles were set (battles were swayed by multiple factors, BUT they never had any randomness).

When i mean randomness, i mean like a "rolling of the dice" battle system!!!

    THANKSSSS!!!!

  • Ahhh yes, 240p, my old friend...

  • Dude change the laws and you can give titles even to your daughters. I love how someone who doesn't know important aspects of a game make reviews of it and bad ones at that. Paradox make complex games, visit their respective forum for more info.

  • What difficulty did you use?

  • Love this game,! but i cant play it on my windows 7 :(

i have no idea how to fix the glitch :/

  • You are too nice, if you ask me. CK is easily one of the worst gaming experiences of my life, and I really wanted to like this game, as I am a Paradox junkie. I played it to the death, but after a couple of hundred hours of gameplay, the nonsense piled up too goddamn much to be bearable any longer. Courts turned into ERs with diseases targeting mostly male heirs, miscarriages all the time, vassals who have no memory of what you do for them and act completely randomly just to piss you off etc.

  • I just played it today. This game is really EPIC.

  • This game reminds me of The Guild with the dynasties and stuff.

  • Truth to be said, Crusader Kings (as with most Paradox titles) certainly isn't for everyone. I love it to death, but I can imagine why it would annoy people. The whole rebellion/backstabbing/little personal control thing is actually a fairly accurate simulator of medieval politics (and if you learn how to play with sliders and policies, can be manipulated) but they can lead to both very frustrating as well as intriguing results in-game.

  • so there's no fighting involved?? looks more like a glorified spreadsheet to me

  • @ambarkumar There is fighting, varying amounts depending on the nation you are

  • so there's no fighting involved??

  • it's weird that they become disloayal when yo ugive them stuff :P messed up shit.

  • If you want a game ruling the country try Europa Universalis 3 made by the same people and is a bit easier than this (or so it seems, ive not played it)

  • wtf is there any actual combat in this or u just look at a map for the whole game?

  • @TheCrispism Just look at the map, though there is fighting. It's more or less just watching 2 little icons and some numbers. Very fun though.

  • I guess you dislike exactly those things that make the game challenging and fun.

  • i have a huge perstiage, and a good amount of money, but every one hates me, my reputation is horrible! how can i fix my rep.???

  • @ALECSF15 If u declare too many wars your reputation going low =( So just dont declare wars for some time... and i know is annoying :D

  • Though I would disagree that this is a "review" more so than a complaint on the game in general I loved how you still made it entertaining the whole time and managed to describe in your own words how I too felt at times playing this game. I can't wait to see more reviews from the past and wait for reviews in the future!

  • @TheLastEnglishmen I dont see myself mocking him, just stating out the obvious. I have nothing personal against scottishterrierdude, in fact, Im grateful for him to do this review in the first place

  • This is one of the best games ever made.

  • It is good to see that there are honest reviewers!

(after E:TW, I couldn't believe how many lied)

However in this case I think the only thing stopping you from enjoying it was the lack of tutorial and the lack of tips about managing vassals.

This is one of my all time favourites, next to Tropico and Panzer General 2, and it is a fav for it's unique approach.

I love that you don't play a kind of abstract ruler, that you don't have to build stables to get knights, only call up your vassal, etc.

  • Great review, this game is way to much for me, also seriously that AI is so annoying with royal marriage stuff, i decline, 1 month later the same count of whateverland offers the same marriage forever until you accept!

  • where do i download this?

  • is this like total war medieval 2?

can u battle or is it auto?

  • I bought this and (rebought) Ricky in Paradoxs 200000 celebration, and I've barley play CK so far. I'm sure that when I get in to it I'll have a blast from it, but as of yet I just don't see where all of the hype come from.

  • What the goals of the game are is up to the player. Becoming king isnt all that hard, wait your chance. Its all about advancement of your dynasty since when your bloodline dies its game over. There is also a mod called Dynastic Glory which looks at your dynasty as an alternative scoring system. Check it out.

  • Lots of things control the loyalty of your vassals and your court members. Diplomacy value, reputation, prestige, taxes and laws etc. Then you have traits, some are more compatible to your ruler/ vassals. All these tilt the balance one way or the other. Hover your mouse over the loyalty to see what factors are pos and neg.

  • A way to prevent this is to make them your vassal(again) and recognise their claim. This will make your badboy go down. Or let them go. In my experience they will come back into your realm if your reputation is low enough. The old king might have to die first. I think also your prestige counts for alot.

  • If loyalty gets below 60 and your vassal has the rebellious trait it may lead to realm duress and civil war which will further undermine the relationship. You can give titles to reduce badboy. Giving titles does not reduce badboy as much as taking titles in a war. Temporary solution is to send a gift(gold)

The reviewer got into this viscious cycle since taking back your former vassals land will net you more badboy which in turn will make your remaining vassals more unhappy over time.

  • I really think this is a good review. The solution to the problem he's experiencing is also what he enjoys with the game, namely the dynasty. With proper education of your offspring, you get better and better regents, who can directly control more and more provinces, also have better control over the vassals. This leads to a kingdom where I have a pretty good base of own counties, wich I can raise armies in if I need to. Call to arms of vassls is only used when attacked by another king or like.

  • I agree with this review, the game needs to take a few pages out of total war to adapt it to a larger audience but keep their uniuqe system.

  • For the rankings, click f2

  • there is a ranking system in the game i think u press tab or somthing

  • I kinda like all Paradox games, but really hate the slow building speed and troublesome expansion.

  • There is a reason why they made people dislike you raising up their armies and taking them to war. For gameplay reasons, it's so if you have a nice size nation you can't just gobble up the world within a few months, so instead you have to balance your growth with your population's happiness. For realistic reasons, war is usually looked down upon from the peasants your sending to war, they probably couldn't care less about your war, but since their obligated to serve, it's going to make them sad.

  • check the tooltip and find out what's making them lose loyalty. Being overly aggressive is not a viable strategy and this game, you can't expect to conquer all of europe and north africa for instance

make sure your taxes aren't too high, allow some time between expansions to improve your reputation, and marry your family members off strategically

it's not a fault of the game, it's just damn complicated at times

  • i got the demo but its cin of boring i mean i like Hearts of iron and those but this just i 2 much in famliy stuff i like politics and war so

  • u dont real have use the cheat kill u can assiasnate them

  • ohh ya and civil war is fun in this game :)

  • lol if they are disloyal its becuase of ur laws and taxis u have 2 balance things like dont tax them to mush they well like u gving them more land and titels and so on good luck

  • gosh,this is absolutely awesome.....wow.....

  • can u be Moldova?

  • yes, every nation on the world :P

  • By the way, I had big problems with reputation at the beginning, too, but I rode it out. My empire fell apart and Scotland vassalized most of my former vassals. I've been trying to pick off vassals from Scotland ever since, slowly making a comeback. It's all about knowing how the game works--and reputation is key.

  • Huh. Well, for the sake of anybody else who comes along, I think this game is great. It's very deep and huge (400 years!), and really worth learning well. The various constraints placed upon you (such as your reputation) require you to think hard about roundabout ways of achieving the kind of expansion you desire--e.g., through marriage to spread your dynasty, or assassination that will cause chaos in a country. 4/5 stars from me -- it is hard to learn and can be a little slow.

  • It appears you didn't understand the game that well. And that's a bad thing in itself because the game comes with no real help.

Personally I love it but I had the same problems as you had in the beginning. And it all comes down to your bad boy/reputation. If you take too much lands people will start to rebel against you, and if you take their lands your bad boy goes up again making them rebel even more. So you need to find a fine line between expansion and loyalty.

  • so no one can tell me how to get Hoi3 to work i asked u but u dont reply

  • You do know that you can mobilise a vassals army by clicking on the province right? (even though it destroys 10% loyalty)

BTW, is there anyone who can help me with the following problem:

Through "breeding programs" I created a ruler with starting stats of 12 m, 10 d, 13i and 14s, and I want him dead (long story, just want his son to rule), but the problem is, he survives every assassination attempt.

Anyone who might know of a very succesful way to kill him?

  • Aye, that's how I usually mobilise them.

A very successful way of killing characters is pressing F12 then typing in "die" - does the trick for me.

  • @Ursanclaw Go to war and hope he dies in battle or gets severly wounded so he gets a health malus. If you mobilize your home province, then your ruler will lead the army.

  • But bugs and learning curve aside, this game is a unique diamond on its own level. Too bad that theres no other games like this and what Ive heard, this is not getting a sequel in near future.

Even when I disagree with you, Id still want to thank you for this review :)

  • I understand that the game is really hard for newcomers, especially when theres practically no good tutorial/guides to go around. But please, do not mock a really good game just because you suck at it.

I dont mean that you should give it straight out 10/10, but at least give it cons and pros it really deserves.

The game is so full (try playing 1.0) of bugs and the horrible learning curve really are thorns on this games side.

  • I really didn't mock this game I just gave my opinion on it. I never tell anyone to like or dislike a game but rather what I think of it. I'm glad you like it and I gave it the score I think it deserves as I do for all the games I review. Not to sound patronising but it is only a game try not to take it personally.

  • Building is taking too long? What did you expect? Go and see that how long it takes to build something with modern technology and think about how slow it was in medieval era. If you dont like the pace of the game, you can speed it up a lot (unlike in many other games)

You conquer hole Scotland and take control of everything, stealing the freedom of all those people and dismissing their beloved leaders. And you wonder why you are not liked?

  • what the hell are you talking about?

  • He was explaining the realism of the constraints placed on expansion.

  • I feel like you are being unfair to this game for two reasons:

    1. The lack of a scoring system is done on purpose. They don't set goals for you because they want you to have your own goals.

    2. Your reputation is exactly like Badboy in Victoria. The whole point is to prevent too much aggressive expansion.

  • Darkness, some people want to have the best country in the world, or an idea on if they should attack.

  • great review.i am from ireland and i cant find any of these games like hearts of iron or victoria but still great review

  • great review. i like the honesty :) really helps. thanx.

  • No problem, glad you liked it. I try to be brutally honest with games but only because it means more when I give a game a good review, rather than be someone who dolls out 10s here, there, and everywhere.
