Riven - Failed Alternate Ending: Gehn Appears

Just completed Riven after trying for a year or so, on and off, bashing my head against the wall with a lot of the puzzles, completely not seeing a lot of useful levers in the game, and relying almost entirely on guides. Last few puzzles were my own accomplishment though.

Absolutely amazing game. The end sequence made my jaw drop. I wish there were more of these, oh wait: Exile, Revelation, End of Ages.

@hallfighter5 No. Capturing Gehn is the only way to even get Catherine to leave her cell. Get him, leave her, yes. Get her, leave him, no.

the first time i saw this sequence in the game, I laughed really hard when Atrus says "I don't understand" and Gehn replies "You NEVER did !" shot him, and then says "Thank you" with that bastard's smile. That's the worst ending you can possibly have in Riven, but not the saddest (the saddest is the one where Gehn is captured but Catherine remains in jail, Atrus's face broke my heart in that one)...

@iheartkirby. That was the main reason I didn't trust Gehn. And reading the book helped me get over the good ending to Riven. Artus links the Myst and drops the book in the fissure and I'm going, "WTF man? I saved your wife and trapped your crazy dad and then you just leave me?" But i smiled when I saw what he did. Awesome book

Yeah, Gehn's a cold dude, alright! But I always rescued Katherine, freed the captive natives and left Gehn locked-up where he belongs, so I missed seeing this bad ending!

Signal Atrus without having both trapped Gehn or freed Catherine. It's the first ending you can get with the star fissure.

I wish I hadn't tried opening the fissure to see what would happen. The good ending would have been better if I hadn't seen this first.
