I saw Orr and Gretzky play many times. If it was a game of pick up and I had first pick I'd take Bobby over Wayne without hesitation. Bobby could skate backwards better than anyone else could skate forwards and that is the way Gill Perrault described Bobby's talent. Greatzky was great but Orr was even greater... the greatest.
Bobby Orr was the best Canadian professional Hockey Player in the Modern era that could skate check stickhandle score assist play defense & fight. if that doesn't describe a complete hockey player then a standard doesn't exist. on top of everything else he was a defenseman.really how can you compare him to Gretsky or Lemeiux? they couldn't back check to save their life.anyhow winning scoring, best defenseman & MVP trophies along with 2 Stanley Cups makes Bobby Orr the Man among men IMHO. thanks
Until Mr. Gretzky win the Selke Award as Best Defensive Forward, Bobby Orr is the greatest!! Norris Trophy, MVP, scoring titles and Stanley Cups adorn Orr's triophy room but no defensive trophy in the 99 house. Not hating on 99, just stating the facts!
@juiceman1965 If Gretzky must have won a Selke for you to consider him the greatest, then Orr must lead the league in goals in a season for me to consider he's the best. If the Richard was handed out since Orr entered the league, Orr would have none vs Gretzky's five. 385 goals in those five years...Orr had 270 in his career. I'm picking the man with more Art Ross', Harts, and Stanley Cup rings. Orr is second best though, ain't no shame in being second best to Gretzky.
@hellonicetomeetyou He was a DEFENSEMAN you jackass. As a DEFENSEMAN he held every assist/scoring record in the game, records that would be later broken by FORWARDS. No defensive awards by either 99 or 66 mean neither were two way players, only scorers.
@juiceman1965 He didnt hold every points/goals record in the game you idiot, not even on his own team.Of course Gretzky was a scorer, he was a centre. You expect Pujols to rob homers? You're using Orr's offence to list him as the greatest, yet Orr wasn't dominant enough to lead the league in goals. Orr was not the best defensive d-man in his days, so why are you expecting 99 to get a Selke? The Norris goes to the best "all-around" d-man, not the best defensive. Gretzky>Orr, period.
@hellonicetomeety Bobby Orr is second to no one the greatest ever period it's not all about goals it's comtroling the game wayne wouldn't stand a chance against Orr in his prime it's just the way it is
@jhi69 I agree that Orr dominated more than Gretz, but his style led to his injuries. If he played for 15+ seasons with that style then I would say he's the best. Or if he won 5+ cups in his short tenure, I would've agreed. Bure was more dominant than Gilmour, but Gilmour got into the HOF before Bure because 93 was a good player for a long period whereas Bure dominated for a short period. You have to consider longevity, does Hasek's short period of dominance make him better than Roy?
@hellonicetomeetyou his style didnt lead to his injuries im sorry but thats wrong what led to his injuries was the fact that nobody could touch him so they would stick there legs out to slow orr down and thats what led to injuries bobby orr won cups by himself on a team with guys ready to retire bobby orr was the greatest player to ever play the game he was the best player in the world every year that he played and played better on 1 leg then everyone played on 2 hes is undeniably the greatest
@MegaMma4life Trying to go through 2 D = risky, trying to go through a team = suicide. If Orr didn't hold on to the puck for so much, he wouldn't have gotten hit...can't hit a guy w/o the puck. B's were a strong team and still couldn't win, Orr won half the amount of Cups in his career as the amount Gretzky won in his 9 years in Edmonton. Gretzky's better. Gretzky's playoff numbers #'s>anything Orr did in his career. #99 is retired throughout the league, not #4.
@hellonicetomeetyou if orr played todays game with all the training and coaching these young kids have he would do the same thing he would skate around the whole team and score whenever he wanted there isnt a player before or since bobby orr that can dominate the game the way he did back then you cannot compaire anyone to him he was simply the best. i would take 1 legged orr vs 5 healthy gretzkys and would say gretzky doesnt touch the puck and loses 5-0
Orr got laid out by Quinn; Stevens, Pronger, etc. would surely make Orr is the second guy to die NHL ice if he tried the same style 20 years later. # 99 is retired in every NHL arena, he has more individual and team awards, and records, in the NHL and international competition. He did more for hockey than the amount of games Bobby Orr missed in his career. Sorry, but hockey experts already voted your boy runner up to The Great One (see THN top 50). Gretzky = greatest ever.
@hellonicetomeetyou lol, if you even called gretzky's mother a dirty name on the ice you would get a two minute penalty. please buddy, bobby orr was the best... period. if people were ALLOWED to hit wayne with good clean hard hits, he wouldn't of had half his scoring records.
@MrMferg240 99 did get hit, eg Hawerchuk, Buchburger, Mccreary, Suter, etc. yet he still played for 2 decades. Gretzky didn't get hit a lot compared to Orr because 99 would rather pass the puck than to risk getting hit, despite that he still has more goals than your fav. player. He also had McSorley and Semenko due to good management. He played a lot of international hockey, do you mean to tell me that international refs conspired to prevent players from hitting 99?
There's no doubt Orr was by far ahead of his time, having accomplished some the greatest feats in NHL history. However, if he played in the trap era, or today's NHL, he'd get creamed. He would never put up the numbers he did, or get away skating end to end like he did.
i have very much pride in my youtube favorited videos but i must drop this video after many months. creed is simply not acceptible backgroung music for me to honor the great NUMBER 6
LOL! The "SYSTEMS" that no team even HAD back then would shut this shit down so fucking fast... Let's see him try that on Scott Stevens in the 90's. His knees would be the least of his worries... Lemieux would embarrass the guy. He cheated. Circled and waited for the players he WANTED to get on the ice so he could get a point. FUCK DON CHERRY! What did he have? 10 - 20 goal scorers on his team? THANK GOD for Pat Quinn and Pete Mahovlich!!!!
@DriftyArmadillo He played 10 years I think... but the last few on one leg, pretty much.. especially when he was with Chicago. He played on one leg in the Canada Cup and was voted MVP I think... our at least made a tournament all-star
@skaha77 Orr would pull about 3-4 opposing players out of position with his skating and have the option to pass to just about anyone on the team, that's about as good of a playmaker as you can get, Gretzky either pulled up in the zone to hit the third man or set up from his office. Orr did everything, and his office was the entire rink.
Orr is the greatest until #99 wins the Selke trophy as best defensive forward. Orr won Norris trophies as best defenseman as well as scoring titles making him a two way player. Not hating on The Great One by any stretch! Both guys are incredible ambassadors of the game and gentlemen by any measure.
@81overon I saw Orr's first knee injury. It was the summer after his first season in the NHL, in Winnipeg. It was called 'Mid Summer All Star Classic', which had pro players from Manitoba play players from the NHL. The injury occurred when a teammate of Orr's crashed into him behind the net. Orr left the game... he went on to have that operated on, the first of 7 knee operations. Think what he would have done to the record books if he had played 20 years.
boys, boys.. gretzky is the great one, we all know that. but bobby is the best one. the consumate.. its true, man.. imagine if he had the modern things going for him...

OP and all. I'm an old 'un. Bobby Orr was God (I'm from Boston, so SLIGHTLY biased, lol) but the cutting factor of his entire career was that EVERY opponent respected his play and his bearing off the ice. A role model for all, IMHO!
2 teams: 18 Orrs vs. 18 Gretzkys. Those Gretzkys (the ones not already beaten into wads of bright red sludge) would quake in pure fear after 1 period against Team Bobby. The ones left standing would have all their shots blocked, their orbitals and noses shattered and their time of puck possession would be only a minute or two. The poor Wayners would be too scared to even skate out for the 2nd, opting instead to bang on the league commissioner's door with tear stained lists of complaints in hand.
Orr would also be bigger, stronger faster. You can't compare smaller players of yesteryear to bigger players of today. If Orr played today you would have to up his physical stats to a percentage above todays average player stats. Plus curved non-wood sticks with much more protective equipment. If Orr didn't have severe injuries and pain most of his career his stats would have been at least 30% higher. Tough as nails and talented as fuck.
greatest hockey player? sure orr could fight & do many other things making him into a kind of all around decathelon player considered by many to be the best hockey player because of that, but the definition of a "hockey player" doesn't carry this decathelon ability in essence, for it means simply "an athlete who plays hockey." by that simple definition, the best player ever could be a goaltender. & how to measure? i would say the one rarity who makes the greatest impact on any team in general.
@gunman462 well now, there's no doubt you're far more intelligent than me and can give me an cogent, logical argument that will totally demolish everything i've said...so i'm waiting to be enlightened by your self-assured wisdom. please go ahead--i might learn something here on youtube-- and, of course, do so without the irrational ad hominem attack and little fit of girlie giggles.
@vinnynumbnuts greatest hockey player ever is bobby orr its not even close he changed the way the game was played nobodyt could rush the puck like him and score like him and nobody could play d like him he had the greatest impact on his team in general he had the greatest impact on hockey in general
@MegaMma4life 1. ok, to be clear, when i said, "...makes the greatest impact on any team in general," i meant "general" in the sense of the greatest impact regardless of what position is played; didn't mean necessarily an all around player. orr was definitely in my opinion the greatest all around player. i would agree. but my contention is that the greatest all around player may still not have the greatest impact upon a team--like i said, hockey player, by definition, means simply an...
@MegaMma4life 2. ...athlete who plays hockey. in the 2011 stanley cup final, the best or greatest player on the boston bruins was a goaltender called tim thomas. he really was. as well, even the canucks, at least earlier on, openly said their best player was roberto luongo, also a goalie. well, my point is each of those two teams also had their best all around player. but hey, maybe orr was the greatest player of all time who was also the greatest hockey player of all time. maybe. see my point?

@MegaMma4life 3. sorry, but at the end i meant to say: "...maybe orr was the greatest ALL AROUND player of all time who was also the greatest hockey player of all time..." my kid is on my back yakin' about something. gotta go. anyway, take er easy buddy.
@MegaMma4life Doug Harvey (and before him, Eddie Shore) rushed the puck.. Harvey controlled games. I don't think anyone could skate like Orr, and was a solid on his feet. Those bow-legs, that wide stance... he was hard to knock over
He'd NEVER be able to do that kind of stuff today. Players are bigger, stronger and a whole lot faster. The cheking is better than ever in the history of the game. Orr would get maybe 90-100 pts tops
Orr was the best player ever period. He did it all better than anyone else at his position ever has or ever will. Gretzky was a great offensive player but never found the defensive end, never threw a check and never beat someone to a bloody pulp when necessary. To top it off he cried about fighting needing to be taken out of the game and tried to turn it into figure skating with a puck, turning off many old time fans.He was a giant pussy.
4 idiots managed to disrespect all sports, let alone hockey and the truly gifted by putting their fat little wrinkled, geeky, pathetic finger on the dislike button.
I really wish I could have seen him live to play just one game, but his greatness came far before my time. A player who completely dominated in EVERY aspect of the game like orr did may never come along again in this history of the game. Nobody will EVER go +128, out of all massive 100+ point seasons he had; going plus +128 in a single season is the most impressive thing ever. He is the best ever, with Lemieux being a close second in my opinion, but nobody will ever be as complete a playeras orr
For you Gretzky fans: Orr regularly played 30, 35, or even 40 minutes per game, and sometimes even more. He played a regular shift, killed penalties, was on the point for the Power Play. When the puck was on his stick, NOBODY took it away. All of his records were in spite of having had many surgeries on his knees. A lesser man would have quit, but not Orr! And he led the league in scoring while playing DEFENSE! No other defenseman has ever done THAT!
I respect Gretzkys talent as a forward and pure scorer and passer but Orr was just an absolute perfect all around player. Never saw Wayne drop the gloves or play defense. Bobby did 2 jobs and he was great at both of them and I personally don't think a player that didn't play a complete game should be considered the greatest player ever. No knocks to Gretzky he was truly the great one but Orr was the All around best one.
The best thing about the 2011 Bruins Cup victory for me was that it brought back all the memories of number 4. I was in high school in Mass. during his first 4 years. His speed, acceleration, puck handling, defense, humility, toughness and pure athleticism was the definition of hockey's best. As a "misty-eyed old fart" I still remember the exhilaration of the Cup wins in 70/72. And how fiercely loyal Bruins fans were/are. Thank you Mr. Orr for the memories - you were absolutely the Best.
Orr was the greatest player who ever lived, but he was a psychotic fighter. Watch any of his fights and he never honors the protocol that when the officials intervene, you stop fighting. He's always continuing to go after his opponent and throwing sucker punches long after the fight should've ended. Unbelievable player though.
@bailinnumberguy that WAS the protocol back then. The NHL changed it with third man in rule, etc. Today's "protocols" make fighting often look ridiculous. Back in Orr's day, they didn't stage stuff like today -- they fought because they really were angry.
Ok..the GREATEST and the BEST are 2 different things.
Here is my 2 cents worth..Ive seen all the greats. For an 8 ear period Orr was the best player ever.....but Ill tell you somthing and if you disagree ..TUFF cause its true. I take Gordie Howe for 25 years over Orr for 8 any day and I don't look back. Orr the best ..but Mr Hockeyt, Gordie Howe is still the greatest all around player ever.
Bobby it was an honor and privilege watching you play while growing up. I thought 72 would be the LAST Cup Id see in Boston but I just got back from the Rally and THEY DID IT!!!!!! You guys now have some company! GO BRUINS
there's some clips here of orr here killing penalties... other than his end to end rushes, that is what i remember most about him... killing penalties. he used to keep circling the net as the opposing players chased him round and round. beautiful. never seen anyone do that since.
With all the superlatives about Mr Orr, what always astounded me was his speed, especially his acceleration. Watch him with the puck. He is always going faster than everybody else. But it's deceptive because he was such a smooth skater.
I asked the question to the NESN Networks "Ask the Bruins", What would Bobby Orr's Plus/Minus be if they kept the records in the year he won the scoring title with something like 30 goals and 101 assits...I got an answer.. His plus/minus for that year was "Plus 128".We'll never see another like him.
My Mom use to listen to the Rangers games on the Radio when she lived in the Bronx and is still a Die hard Rangers fan but she said when the Rangers played the Bruins back then she prayed that Orr wouldn't get that Puck because she knew that the Bruins would always win when Bobby Went Top Shelf on Giacomin. My mom also said Bobby Orr Changed the game watching his highlight reel Its amazing what he did and there is only one Bobby Orr Nuff Said.....
Bobby Orr is the best player in the history of the NHL, period. Nobody was ever a better rounded player who could fill any role at any time and do it perfectly every time.
Great player, would still take Larry Robinson over him any day. Had pretty much the same offensive ability, but Larry was a punisher against the boards and had a laser of a shot from the point, you rarely see Orr shooting from the blueline and scoring.
I like most things about this video, especially the nice facts in little windows. But who is the singer? He has a terrible voice!! Still, thanks for posting ... and you got an "I Like" from me.
@FTJFuelTheJet Please feel free to create your own videos of Gretzky. Good luck finding footage of him sticking up for a teammate, blocking a shot, fighting without being someone else's punching bag, etc.
Gretzky was the greatest offensive playerr. But he also holds the NHL record for being on the ice for the most goals scored against. Not to mention most consecutive games without throwing a check, clearing the crease, etc. Bobby Orr was the ultimate all around greatest hockey player ever!!!!!
@85highlander The question here is who was the greatest player, so of course names will be named! This will set the record straight and will prove it by example undoubtedly, that Orr is the finest example of a hockey player ever to lace up pair of skates. Hockey is an all around game and NO ONE personified that better or even comes close to Bobby Orr!!!!!!!!!!!!

@85highlander I my not denying that orr was the greatest all-round player ever but I just don't get where the Gretzkyy bashing comes from has a GREAT player so was Orr. Why can't people just exevpt that?
@FTJFuelTheJet Difference, Gretzky couldn't block a shot, couldn't stick up for himself (had McSorley and company to do that) and couldn't recover from a hit or even go into the corners. May have been great when he had the puck, but his defensive game was not so great. Orr and the closest player to him, which is Lemieux, could do it all. That's all I have to say.
@103Uke i guess orr and lemieux shouldn't have have been doing all that rough stuff either.gretzky played more games then both of them and as more points...lol and just as many cups...lol thats the first i thought of that lemieux and orr together couldn't beat gretzky. and if you average out their +/- gretzky is higher..lol
@MrRob7004 You seem to have never heard of Semnko or McSorley who protected Gretzky to have great stats and less serious injuries to begin with, right? Messier, Coffey, Fuhr, Kurri, Anderson who are in the Hall of Fame brought Wayne those Cups. While Orr and Lemieux on the other hand have less hall famers and fought their own fights, contended with more injuries and took the load upon themselves more cause they had less then stacked teams, then Wayne did in Edmonton.
@103Uke hahaha orr could be his stick boy and lemieux his water boy ..lol....if you take away all of the points he got as an oiler he would still beat orr..lol
@MrRob7004 Gretzky couldn't defend himself even if his life depended on it. Please, try battling cancer and knee and back problems while playing and get back to me.
@MrRob7004 Maybe Gretzky should have gotten cancer, a bad back, no enforcers and bad knees or played a softer sport instead. Let me repeat this again, be a hockey player have cancer and busted up knees try playing hockey with NO ENFORCERS sticking up for you and then get back to me, we all know Gretzky didn't do it so that explains everything.
@103Uke ifs and buts..lol talk facts dude...gretzky 3369 total pro points...lemieux 1895 and orr 1007 total pro points..did gretzky have an enforcer the year he scored 378 goals? was it a stacked team? sure gretzky was protected..he was the only hockey player to sell out every rink he played in, he helped many other teams make money.
@MrRob7004 Only because Wayne played in an era where more people were watching the NHL. However, he did bring people to hockey that would not have cared less, or knew anything about the game. All they knew was, goal good, let one in, bad! They had no clue about all the aspects of the game, and, sorry, Gretzky never dominated both ends like Orr did. Imagine if Orr had been on offense... We would never have cared about Wayne then, because Orr would have all the records.
@MrRob7004 Gtretzky and Lemieux may have gotton more points but keep in mind Orr played DEFFENCE, and Orr palyed less games. he played only 12 seasons due to a bum knee, Gtertzky played over 20 and Lemieux 17 Orr is unarguably the best hockey player ever, thats facts dude
@85highlander Hahaha that's crazy. My dad told me every time I mentioned Gretzky how much better Orr was, but that's just hilarious. I've always wished I could have watched him play other than in highlights, which still leave me awed.
@CFCanuck As I stated above, Gretzky was by far the greatest pure offensive force the game has ever seen, but he wasn't a complete player. He was on the ice witnessing 2285 goals scored against his team, also a record that many Gretzky fans choose to ignore. As for the lack of the other physical stuff, this is common knowledge to anyone who witnessed him play. In contrast, Bobby Orr dominated the ENTIRE ice, defense (Norris winner) and offense (only D-man to win the Art Ross).
@85highlander I agree 100% with you! People who don't know hockey which includes a lot of so called experts forget that there is two parts to the game THAT ARE OF EQUAL IMPORTANCE. Keeping the puck out of your net is just as important as scoring. So the best players are the one's who play both ends of the rink. Howe, Lemaire, Orr, Trottier, Sakic, Yzerman, Forsberg, etc. These guys all won as many Cups as Gretzky did. Gretzky and Lemieux were liabilities sometimes. People forget that!
@85highlander but Edmonton scored 448 goals one season. You see if you go three they'd get eight. Who t f cares if he was a fighter, banger?? Really dude. You need a setup man and 99 is the best ever.. and I doubt there will ever be another like him. Assists: 163. but you Bruins fans and other cultists still worship the Great Bobby Orr. Know who is just as awesome as either one? Howe. At age fifty plus was a top six forward. Try that on for size
@skaha77 Gordie, my main man.. never saw him live until he came to town with Houston Aeros, age 45...was leading the WHA in scoring until he busted his ankle. Every time he got on the ice he almost scored. A writer said he had an invisible 5-foot buffer around him, since other players were afraid of him. And if you roughed up his sons, you'd better get ready to enter a world of hurt lol... Gordie was called the 'Surgeon General of the NHL' for good reason.
@85highlander Orr skated around like he was playing against human pylons lol. Like he was playing against kids. I liked Orr because he was tough and fought his own battles. I actually disliked Gretzky because he was a whiner and a wussy... had to be protected by goons. Give me Gordie and Orr any day.
@FTJFuelTheJet ... then stop spreading the false propaganda that Gretzky is the GOAT. He is not. He IS not the GOAT. He IS the greatest scorer in Hockey History, but that alone does NOT make him the greatest player. I watched them both. Bobby Orr is the Greatest of All-Time.
So glad this shows more than just his goal scoring. Highlights his unsurpassed penalty killing and end-of-game skills. If the Bs were up by 1 w/less than a minute to go - Orr would either skate circles around everybody on the ice, thus keeping the puck off his opponent's sticks - or, if the goalie had been pulled, simply kill 45 secs until finally lofting the puck from his own end into an empty net.
Shorthanded? That merely freed up more room on the ice for him to maneuver and score!
I remember how he use to tape his stick with that thin width of tape , he was a complete hockey player and the greatest all around hockey player ever !
i cried when he retired!!! There is no player that did what he did to the game in such a brief career. I can only imagine the totals if he would have played healthy for 15 years . Gretzky was great but there is only Bobby Orr at the top people.
I'm lucky enough to have seen him play and I had forgotten about his keep away skill. It drove other teams crazy when he used to take the puck on a PK and just skate around with it. Great video and thanks for the memories.
These highlights are good, but highlights often don't do Orr justice. He used to control the game without scoring. If they were killing penalties, the other team couldn't get the puck off him! Also his speed was amazing, but he saved it for when he needed it. You see a bit of that at 1:17 here when he suddenly turns on the after-burners. If he was caught up-ice, he was so fast he'd get back into the play to break it up. As good as he looks in the highlights...he was better!
Debate it all you want about who the best ever was but for me it comes down to this, Orr was a defensman. 5 Orr's would destroy 5 Gretzky's or 5 anyone. Broke my heart to see him in the end with those knees.
What many people forget is how tough hockey was in the 1970's. How many bench clearing brawls was Gretzky involved in? Gretzky also benifited from Orr because after Orr's forced retirement (due to a bad left knee), the NHL toughned the rules and peneltys against cheap hits and play. Lastly, Orr wasn't just a scoring machine, he was also the best DEFENSIVE player on the ice. Gerry Cheevers said he should give 1/2 his pay to Orr! Truely the best alltime!
I love Bobby Too. However, I dont think we need to take shots at Gretzky, Howe and Mario to make our point (that's like saying yeah Elvis was great but he couldn't write songs like Buddy Holly) lets just enjoy genius.
I'm a huge Mike Bossy fan, saw Gretzky and Lemieux in their primes, but i really wish I could have seen Bobby Orr live. these videos are awesome and a treat to watch.
In most things people like to debate, things become subjective, ie- "who is the best guitarist ever?"
But this is an area with just a fact. Orr was so much better than anyone who ever played ,period. Anyone who is rational and knows hockey, knows this. Even in Montreal, they know this.Gretzky said it best..." compared to Orr , we are all merely children". Really there's no arguement worthy of contradicting that quote.
Wish I could have seen him play even just half a game..I came in this world too late for that, oh well. There will never be another. Beautiful compilation!
Happy Birthday to Number Four, Bobby Orr, the greatest hockey player of yesterday or today. You will forever be # 1 in the hearts and minds of hockey fans everywhere!!
@85highlander gretzky had a 92 goal season did orr do that? gretzky had 4 200+ point seasons did orr do that? Gretzky won 4 stanley cups did orr do that? gretzky played for 20 years did orr do that? i'm looking at the NHL record book wow gretzkys name is all over it....hahaha who the hell is bobby orr
@MrRob7004 Don't forget to list Gretzky's record of most consecutive games without throwing a check, without blocking a shot, without standing up for a teammate in a fight, and for being on the ice for the most goals in NHL history.
And yes, Gretzky was a fantastic offensive player -- it's just that Bobby Orr played all three zones, not just one.
@85highlander gretzky had 88 short handed goals orr had 15.... lol gretzky finished with a +518 .if gretzky was so stupid to have not stayed health and have played only 10 years he would have had 3 points /game and a +574 ,instead of orr checking fighting etc... or skating around with the puck for over a minute he should have been scoring like wayne did..
@MrRob7004 Dear Mr. Rob -- Go youtube "Gretzky fights Broten" -- you know, Neal Broten that humongous beast of a fighter, and report back. Then lead me to some footage of Gretzky checking someone off the puck or into a corner and I will retract. Thanks.
@85highlander Ever heard of comparing apples to oranges? Gretzky was as good a center as Orr was a D man. The two greatest players EVER. and I saw them both -- live
@skaha77 How's this for a starting five, (and a few subs,) Center: Howe, left wing: Gretzky, RIght wing: Lemiux, (Yes, I kinow they are centers, but they could all play wing if needed, I am sure,) with the Richard Bros. on the bench. Defense: Bobby Orr, Terry O'Riley, Ray Borque. Goal: Jacques LePlante, Patrick Roy. Feel free to fill in the rest.
@85highlander I cannot help but laugh at comments like yours. Gretzky is the most awesome palyer to ever lace on a pair skates. I watched him play from row 18, for 3 years. I watched Orr, too. Who cares if he (99)ever fought a lot? You know ANYTHING about the game at all? DId Bossy ever fight anyone? YOu are just another clueless wannabe
other than the questionable music choice, what a fuckin awesome post!!! good on you for showing some fights too. best Orr vid I have seen.

Until Mr. Gretzky win the Selke Award as Best Defensive Forward, Bobby Orr is the greatest!! Norris Trophy, MVP, scoring titles and Stanley Cups adorn Orr's triophy room but no defensive trophy in the 99 house. Not hating on 99, just stating the facts!
juiceman1965 1 month ago
@juiceman1965 If Gretzky must have won a Selke for you to consider him the greatest, then Orr must lead the league in goals in a season for me to consider he's the best. If the Richard was handed out since Orr entered the league, Orr would have none vs Gretzky's five. 385 goals in those five years...Orr had 270 in his career. I'm picking the man with more Art Ross', Harts, and Stanley Cup rings. Orr is second best though, ain't no shame in being second best to Gretzky.
hellonicetomeetyou 1 month ago
@hellonicetomeetyou He was a DEFENSEMAN you jackass. As a DEFENSEMAN he held every assist/scoring record in the game, records that would be later broken by FORWARDS. No defensive awards by either 99 or 66 mean neither were two way players, only scorers.
juiceman1965 1 month ago
@juiceman1965 He didnt hold every points/goals record in the game you idiot, not even on his own team.Of course Gretzky was a scorer, he was a centre. You expect Pujols to rob homers? You're using Orr's offence to list him as the greatest, yet Orr wasn't dominant enough to lead the league in goals. Orr was not the best defensive d-man in his days, so why are you expecting 99 to get a Selke? The Norris goes to the best "all-around" d-man, not the best defensive. Gretzky>Orr, period.
hellonicetomeetyou 1 month ago
@hellonicetomeety Bobby Orr is second to no one the greatest ever period it's not all about goals it's comtroling the game wayne wouldn't stand a chance against Orr in his prime it's just the way it is
jhi69 3 weeks ago
@jhi69 I agree that Orr dominated more than Gretz, but his style led to his injuries. If he played for 15+ seasons with that style then I would say he's the best. Or if he won 5+ cups in his short tenure, I would've agreed. Bure was more dominant than Gilmour, but Gilmour got into the HOF before Bure because 93 was a good player for a long period whereas Bure dominated for a short period. You have to consider longevity, does Hasek's short period of dominance make him better than Roy?
hellonicetomeetyou 1 week ago
@hellonicetomeetyou his style didnt lead to his injuries im sorry but thats wrong what led to his injuries was the fact that nobody could touch him so they would stick there legs out to slow orr down and thats what led to injuries bobby orr won cups by himself on a team with guys ready to retire bobby orr was the greatest player to ever play the game he was the best player in the world every year that he played and played better on 1 leg then everyone played on 2 hes is undeniably the greatest
MegaMma4life 4 days ago
@MegaMma4life Trying to go through 2 D = risky, trying to go through a team = suicide. If Orr didn't hold on to the puck for so much, he wouldn't have gotten hit...can't hit a guy w/o the puck. B's were a strong team and still couldn't win, Orr won half the amount of Cups in his career as the amount Gretzky won in his 9 years in Edmonton. Gretzky's better. Gretzky's playoff numbers #'s>anything Orr did in his career. #99 is retired throughout the league, not #4.
hellonicetomeetyou 2 days ago
@hellonicetomeetyou if orr played todays game with all the training and coaching these young kids have he would do the same thing he would skate around the whole team and score whenever he wanted there isnt a player before or since bobby orr that can dominate the game the way he did back then you cannot compaire anyone to him he was simply the best. i would take 1 legged orr vs 5 healthy gretzkys and would say gretzky doesnt touch the puck and loses 5-0
MegaMma4life 4 days ago
Orr got laid out by Quinn; Stevens, Pronger, etc. would surely make Orr is the second guy to die NHL ice if he tried the same style 20 years later. # 99 is retired in every NHL arena, he has more individual and team awards, and records, in the NHL and international competition. He did more for hockey than the amount of games Bobby Orr missed in his career. Sorry, but hockey experts already voted your boy runner up to The Great One (see THN top 50). Gretzky = greatest ever.
hellonicetomeetyou 2 days ago
@hellonicetomeetyou ur retarded if orr played during gretzkys time you wouldnt know who gretzky is bro your wrong just stop
MegaMma4life 2 days ago
@hellonicetomeetyou lol, if you even called gretzky's mother a dirty name on the ice you would get a two minute penalty. please buddy, bobby orr was the best... period. if people were ALLOWED to hit wayne with good clean hard hits, he wouldn't of had half his scoring records.
MrMferg240 2 weeks ago
@MrMferg240 99 did get hit, eg Hawerchuk, Buchburger, Mccreary, Suter, etc. yet he still played for 2 decades. Gretzky didn't get hit a lot compared to Orr because 99 would rather pass the puck than to risk getting hit, despite that he still has more goals than your fav. player. He also had McSorley and Semenko due to good management. He played a lot of international hockey, do you mean to tell me that international refs conspired to prevent players from hitting 99?
hellonicetomeetyou 1 week ago
There's no doubt Orr was by far ahead of his time, having accomplished some the greatest feats in NHL history. However, if he played in the trap era, or today's NHL, he'd get creamed. He would never put up the numbers he did, or get away skating end to end like he did.

THANK GOD for Pat Quinn and Pete Mahovlich!!!!

er3L 2 months ago

OP and all. I'm an old 'un. Bobby Orr was God (I'm from Boston, so SLIGHTLY biased, lol) but the cutting factor of his entire career was that EVERY opponent respected his play and his bearing off the ice. A role model for all, IMHO!
calibanjr 3 months ago

DeedsResearcher 6 months ago

Unbelievable player though.
bailinnumberguy 7 months ago
@bailinnumberguy that WAS the protocol back then. The NHL changed it with third man in rule, etc. Today's "protocols" make fighting often look ridiculous. Back in Orr's day, they didn't stage stuff like today -- they fought because they really were angry.

FTJFuelTheJet 11 months ago
@FTJFuelTheJet Difference, Gretzky couldn't block a shot, couldn't stick up for himself (had McSorley and company to do that) and couldn't recover from a hit or even go into the corners. May have been great when he had the puck, but his defensive game was not so great. Orr and the closest player to him, which is Lemieux, could do it all. That's all I have to say.
103Uke 10 months ago
@103Uke i guess orr and lemieux shouldn't have have been doing all that rough stuff either.gretzky played more games then both of them and as more points...lol and just as many cups...lol thats the first i thought of that lemieux and orr together couldn't beat gretzky. and if you average out their +/- gretzky is higher..lol
MrRob7004 9 months ago
@MrRob7004 You seem to have never heard of Semnko or McSorley who protected Gretzky to have great stats and less serious injuries to begin with, right? Messier, Coffey, Fuhr, Kurri, Anderson who are in the Hall of Fame brought Wayne those Cups. While Orr and Lemieux on the other hand have less hall famers and fought their own fights, contended with more injuries and took the load upon themselves more cause they had less then stacked teams, then Wayne did in Edmonton.

gretzky got more points then both of them...haha...maybe orr and lemieux should have played a softer sport and leave hockey for the men.
MrRob7004 9 months ago
@MrRob7004 Maybe Gretzky should have gotten cancer, a bad back, no enforcers and bad knees or played a softer sport instead. Let me repeat this again, be a hockey player have cancer and busted up knees try playing hockey with NO ENFORCERS sticking up for you and then get back to me, we all know Gretzky didn't do it so that explains everything.
103Uke 9 months ago
@103Uke ifs and buts..lol talk facts dude...gretzky 3369 total pro points...lemieux 1895 and orr 1007 total pro points..did gretzky have an enforcer the year he scored 378 goals? was it a stacked team? sure gretzky was protected..he was the only hockey player to sell out every rink he played in, he helped many other teams make money.
MrRob7004 9 months ago
@MrRob7004 Only because Wayne played in an era where more people were watching the NHL. However, he did bring people to hockey that would not have cared less, or knew anything about the game. All they knew was, goal good, let one in, bad! They had no clue about all the aspects of the game, and, sorry, Gretzky never dominated both ends like Orr did. Imagine if Orr had been on offense... We would never have cared about Wayne then, because Orr would have all the records.

@85highlander Seriously man, where do you find these records for Gretzky.. I can't find them anywhere.
CFCanuck 6 months ago
@CFCanuck As I stated above, Gretzky was by far the greatest pure offensive force the game has ever seen, but he wasn't a complete player. He was on the ice witnessing 2285 goals scored against his team, also a record that many Gretzky fans choose to ignore. As for the lack of the other physical stuff, this is common knowledge to anyone who witnessed him play. In contrast, Bobby Orr dominated the ENTIRE ice, defense (Norris winner) and offense (only D-man to win the Art Ross).
85highlander 6 months ago 17
@85highlander I agree 100% with you! People who don't know hockey which includes a lot of so called experts forget that there is two parts to the game THAT ARE OF EQUAL IMPORTANCE. Keeping the puck out of your net is just as important as scoring. So the best players are the one's who play both ends of the rink. Howe, Lemaire, Orr, Trottier, Sakic, Yzerman, Forsberg, etc. These guys all won as many Cups as Gretzky did. Gretzky and Lemieux were liabilities sometimes. People forget that!
TheGoalieGuru 4 months ago 2

Redscotter 11 months ago
I wish the bs could ever have a player like that in my lifetime, then again under julien orr wouldn't be allowed to use his offensive skills

Bobby Orr's dad, Doug, bartended my wedding in 1983, heheh. My stepfather is Bobby's cousin. It's great to live in Parry Sound.
Jeeperrandy 1 year ago
So glad this shows more than just his goal scoring. Highlights his unsurpassed penalty killing and end-of-game skills. If the Bs were up by 1 w/less than a minute to go - Orr would either skate circles around everybody on the ice, thus keeping the puck off his opponent's sticks - or, if the goalie had been pulled, simply kill 45 secs until finally lofting the puck from his own end into an empty net.
Shorthanded? That merely freed up more room on the ice for him to maneuver and score!

The best part is Bobby kicking the shit out of that cunt Bobby Clarke at 2:56.
StumpyClark3217 1 year ago
@StumpyClark3217 You're right about Bobby Clarke being a cunt, but that's not him in the fight at 2:56. Clarkie wore #16 on his bully sweater.
That's #10 Bill Clement you can see giving several commanding headbutts to Mr. Orr's right fist.
Bill wore that number from 1972 to 1975, then Mel Bridgeman came to town in a trade and wore it until 1982.
Clement, Clement, hands of cement.
(except in a fight) Ha!

i cried when he retired!!!

There is no word that can fully describe just how great Bobby Orr was at playing hockey, nor his love of the game
blyson 1 year ago
These highlights are good, but highlights often don't do Orr justice. He used to control the game without scoring. If they were killing penalties, the other team couldn't get the puck off him! Also his speed was amazing, but he saved it for when he needed it. You see a bit of that at 1:17 here when he suddenly turns on the after-burners. If he was caught up-ice, he was so fast he'd get back into the play to break it up. As good as he looks in the highlights...he was better!

I'm not sure that Orr wasn't the most gifted person ever in his respective field.

Debate it all you want about who the best ever was but for me it comes down to this, Orr was a defensman. 5 Orr's would destroy 5 Gretzky's or 5 anyone. Broke my heart to see him in the end with those knees.
Stuffyou100 1 year ago

@jammie1010 Yeah but Elvis wasn't that good.

Really there's no arguement worthy of contradicting that quote.
jimdylanyoung 1 year ago 3
couldnt have said it better myself best this is was and ever will be
another quote is
i hope that god sees fit to leave me on this earth long enough to see a player better then bobby orr because that player is going to be somthing else

As a die-hard Black Hawks fan, I hated Bobby Orr. Why? He was just plain too good.
Watching these video's reminds me of just how great he was.. too bad his knees gave out!

MrRob7004 11 months ago
@MrRob7004 Don't forget to list Gretzky's record of most consecutive games without throwing a check, without blocking a shot, without standing up for a teammate in a fight, and for being on the ice for the most goals in NHL history.
And yes, Gretzky was a fantastic offensive player -- it's just that Bobby Orr played all three zones, not just one.
85highlander 11 months ago 2
@85highlander gretzky had 88 short handed goals orr had 15.... lol gretzky finished with a +518 .if gretzky was so stupid to have not stayed health and have played only 10 years he would have had 3 points /game and a +574 ,instead of orr checking fighting etc... or skating around with the puck for over a minute he should have been scoring like wayne did..
MrRob7004 11 months ago
@MrRob7004 Dear Mr. Rob -- Go youtube "Gretzky fights Broten" -- you know, Neal Broten that humongous beast of a fighter, and report back. Then lead me to some footage of Gretzky checking someone off the puck or into a corner and I will retract. Thanks.

@85highlander Ever heard of comparing apples to oranges? Gretzky was as good a center as Orr was a D man. The two greatest players EVER. and I saw them both -- live
skaha77 6 months ago

YOu are just another clueless wannabe
skaha77 5 months ago
@skaha77 gretzky not only didn't fight but he didn't body check, back check or play effectively in his own zone (needed a map to find his way there).
