Floating food doesn't cause swim bladder disorders, this is a myth. High protein diets can cause this but fancy goldfish are capable of expelling any air they take in while feeding. Fancy goldfish are not tropical fish though and so should not really be housed with parrot fish
to schen2000: feeding fancy goldfish floating food, can eventually cause swim-bladder disorders. Dropsy is actually acute kidney failure due to many factors and you should treat dropsy with epsom salt, don't quote me on this but I think the recipe is 1/8 teaspoon per gallon, but do not use more or it may kill your fish, and this recipe is only for use with salt tolerant fish like goldfish
Mine has had it for about 2 weeks now. Before she was just very sluggish. The last 3 days she's just at the bottom of the tank on the gravel laying on he side, her gills are still moving though. I think I might flush her to end her suffering. Poor thing.
My fish died from his fins getting ripped off, Rip nemo, all drains lead to the ocean! What do you think he died of? his fins were getting ripped so bad he couldn't swim to the top to get food, and it was my first fishuneral, I must say he was a carnival fish though, so I don't think he would've lasted very long anyway... so which was it? A disease? or just being a carnival fish?
Tooworn was right but put 1 teaspoon of clove oil in the bag every 10 minutes so it falls asleep. When it's asleep it's breathing will dramatically lessen.
There is no cure for dropsy I believe, do you may want to euthanize him. Beautiful pearlscale..
I wouldn't think so- how stressfull! And the fact that he can't breathe. Its still suffocating, and suffocation is the WORST way to die (perhaps next to burning).
I'd just scoop and promptly bash it over the head. Its quicker, no suffocation.
your a fucking idiot who says suffocating is the worst way to die. as a person i have almost suffocated to death (passed out is the worst it can get)and i can think of a million different ways that would be worst. fuck yourself. idiot fish rapist.
Look it up, even on here. There are some ways that seem humane. The clove oil method is what I plan to use when the time comes. The directions need to be followed carefully or it will suffer. Most people use Vodka after the fish is asleep from clove oil, but I've heard of just carefully adding the oil until the gills don't move. This is trickier with bettas since they don't just use there gills but also the top of their head. I've heard they thrash, and I don't want to see that, I own bettas.
My dwarf gourami died of dropsy yesterday. I didn't have anything to put him to sleep with though, so I had to just let him suffer. They breathe the same as siamese fighters and as soon as his gills stopped working he was up at the top, thrashing, breathing the air :( I only wish I had treated him for bacterial infection three days before and he might have survived. If you catch fish in the first stages of dropsy sometimes you can save them.
my fish just died. :( he lost his color and half of one of his eyes is blue. the other is brown. i don't know what happened. :,( and the past couple weeks he didn't eat so i don't know why. does anyone know?
@LAbrown96 not to sound like an ass but a fish not really my idea of a loved family pet, every one is entitledto there own opinion but i could c if the fish was really cute and did funny and cool stuff...but they just swim and thats it
@goneinmymind goldfish are actually highly intelligent creatures, and can be conditioned or even trained by their owners. there are actual kits out there you can buy to teach your fish some cool tricks!
@ilovetheetangs na, I found out back then my parrot fish was picking on him. Back in the day before I knew ciclids and goldfish should not be tanked together :P
If conditions of the water may have deteriorated prior to this, it could well have contributed to what is definetly dropsy. If this problem is still persisting or in any other fish you have, add an antibiotic to the fish's food. If you use flake food, mix in about 1% of antibiotic. A good tip is to keep the fish hungry & they'll eat the mixture before the antibiotic dissipates. Antibiotics usually come in 250 mg capsules. Recommended antibiotics are chloromycetin or tracycline. Good Luck.
Ours is recovering somehow ( hopefully ) since we did a water change then I feed them green peas ( cut into small bits ) everyday. We feed them flakes and sinking pellets as well.
I ust found out today that our fish has dropsy. Poor fishies. I read on goldfishfacts that it's always going to have the internal infection, even if the dropsy goes away so it may relapse. I dunno what to do about Morris either!
That's terrible... poor fish...

What caused the dropsy disease? Does it have to do with feeding fish floating food instead of sinking food? Thanks.

I know dropsy makes other fish look like pearscale goldfish.......never seen a pearscale suffering from it.
Pearscales are my favorite....I like red cap orandas as well. I used to work for a tropical fish wholesaler as a teen......loved that job :)
