@ApoaJonnz While kayaks are more maneuverable, most kayakers are a different breed. You need to understand if you roll one in this kind of stuff in the wrong spot and hit a rock with your face, you will fuck yourself up, or die without competent rescuers. While this is not common, it could happen to people without proper experience way easier imo. Plus, rafts have the fun/team/beer with friends factor and the river isn't quite as daunting with others. I own two play kayaks, but love to raft too.

@hydrophobia7 but they never loose the paddle! At 1:05 the skinny guide pulls in the water logged tourist like pulling a small dog from a water puddle, on dry land. No insurance, no training, a couple of fearless guys with a raft.

@jedrin The guides are a lot better than you think. They are definitely very trained and experienced. There's also a helicopter that can come in for emergency situations I believe. The guides know their shit.

@presatito Just the fact that everyone made it through the extreme rapids shows they are very good. And they are strong, pulling the rafters back on board while still in the rapids. And saving the paddle, expert for sure. When you are expert at something one can make it look casual, the skill in every move is lost to the untrained eye. A helicopter is nice only if you are still breathing. It is funny to to watch at home, better to be there in the water though.

@jedrin The Zambezi is a very high volume river with huge rapids. Despite this, it's relatively safe since there's not that many rocks. The guides run this thing basically every day and there's rarely any deadly incidents. There's also safety kayakers all over. Usually the worst that will happen is you have to hold your breath for a long swim (this can be scary if not used to it) or you get some bumps and bruises. The chopper is usually for broken bones and such, I presume.

The guide at 1:14 has his paddle IN HIS LAP!!! He should not be guiding! If you keep the blade buried in the water when you hit the hole, it almost guarantees that you will not flip as you can keep the boat lined up straight. The best way to turn a boat upside down is to just sit there with your blade out of the water. Guide basics 101.

You don't want to raft kayak or go near a hole like the one at the end of the video. A keeper hole that extreme is too dangerous to be in . Thats strong class 5 with a fair chance of death. Just be aware of the dangers. I have whitewater kayaked enough to know.

To put it as simply as possible....

A hole like that on a river has a wash on top like a breaking wave, so the raft was essentially being surfed upstream. The top of the hole pushed the boat upstream while the main flow went below the boat downstream.

Ok, there is water above the "hole" dropping in from both sides creating high powered eddies. Once you get stuck and the eddies pull you in you're SOL until you get pushed out somehow.
