did anybody see the africans raise their fists in pride when they knock out the tourists and boost themselves forward in the end! FUCK YEA HARAMBE!!!!
uhhh did anybody die in this? How do you get back in? I have never done this (dont think i want to) I have only gone tubing in very smalllllll rapids compared to this, but still quite a few deaths at an area that is wayy too dangerous for me to be tubing at (I am 12 so ya XD ) my parents have gone in the very dangerous part though, they have gone tubing in the dark through rapids.
LOL.... They give you a safety speech before rafting, telling everyone that if they fall out, to get back in the raft before the rapids hit smooth water because of crocs and hippos. Went on that shit one time. Almost died 5 or 6 times. Ill never raft again. Crazy Africans!
1:05 I like the Kayak paddling by like nothing to wory about, while the rafting-guys struggle to stay with there boat -> kayaking way cooler than rafting
@ApoaJonnz While kayaks are more maneuverable, most kayakers are a different breed. You need to understand if you roll one in this kind of stuff in the wrong spot and hit a rock with your face, you will fuck yourself up, or die without competent rescuers. While this is not common, it could happen to people without proper experience way easier imo. Plus, rafts have the fun/team/beer with friends factor and the river isn't quite as daunting with others. I own two play kayaks, but love to raft too.
Lool I heard that.. :D I guided on the cheat canyon for 2 seasons, all the guides sat down one night and watched a full length video of Zambezi crashes.. I give a hats off to those that brave the Zambezi, afaik it's the ultimate mother of white water rafting. I've seen enough carnage (mostly other rafts) during my tour, I'll stick to the States :P Cheers! :)
I like how the guides don't even have their paddles in the water going in to big holes... Of course your going to get spun in the hole and surf or flip!
@hydrophobia7 but they never loose the paddle! At 1:05 the skinny guide pulls in the water logged tourist like pulling a small dog from a water puddle, on dry land. No insurance, no training, a couple of fearless guys with a raft.
@jedrin The guides are a lot better than you think. They are definitely very trained and experienced. There's also a helicopter that can come in for emergency situations I believe. The guides know their shit.
@presatito Just the fact that everyone made it through the extreme rapids shows they are very good. And they are strong, pulling the rafters back on board while still in the rapids. And saving the paddle, expert for sure. When you are expert at something one can make it look casual, the skill in every move is lost to the untrained eye. A helicopter is nice only if you are still breathing. It is funny to to watch at home, better to be there in the water though.
@jedrin The Zambezi is a very high volume river with huge rapids. Despite this, it's relatively safe since there's not that many rocks. The guides run this thing basically every day and there's rarely any deadly incidents. There's also safety kayakers all over. Usually the worst that will happen is you have to hold your breath for a long swim (this can be scary if not used to it) or you get some bumps and bruises. The chopper is usually for broken bones and such, I presume.
@justwired but the guide doesn't let loose of his paddle. All through it he is retrieving the paddles and pulling rafters in like fish in nets 1:30 and 1:38 examples. Half the time no one is the only guy paddling.
holy shit- ive been on class 4's but this shit is intense- the rapids are way more extreme than what im even use to- at that point, you are just at the mercy of the waves
this is one of those where I want to watch it on you tube but don't want to be paddling any of the two boats lol am happy all ended well (did it?) with my tooth breaking record on whitewater.....
We just posted two episodes of rafting on California's mighty Tuolumne! Wasn't as crazy as this, but there's still plenty of carnage captured on video!
The guide at 1:14 has his paddle IN HIS LAP!!! He should not be guiding! If you keep the blade buried in the water when you hit the hole, it almost guarantees that you will not flip as you can keep the boat lined up straight. The best way to turn a boat upside down is to just sit there with your blade out of the water. Guide basics 101.
На 2:10 злая бочара, ощющения, что киляют специально, сейфы плавают, ходят как попало, на сасиськах, типа река не дура сама вынесит, но выглядет очень серьёзно...
You don't want to raft kayak or go near a hole like the one at the end of the video. A keeper hole that extreme is too dangerous to be in . Thats strong class 5 with a fair chance of death. Just be aware of the dangers. I have whitewater kayaked enough to know.
I'm amazed they didn't fall out of the raft during that portion of the video. Those guides look amazing. They have such great balance and were helping people back on the raft each time someone fell out. They look extremely experienced!
A hole like that on a river has a wash on top like a breaking wave, so the raft was essentially being surfed upstream. The top of the hole pushed the boat upstream while the main flow went below the boat downstream.

I don't understand . . . from 2:18 until 2:46 what force was causing the two-man boat to go upstream?
If it had not been knocked clear by the following boat, what would have happened?
scotjack 2 years ago
To put it as simply as possible....
A hole like that on a river has a wash on top like a breaking wave, so the raft was essentially being surfed upstream. The top of the hole pushed the boat upstream while the main flow went below the boat downstream.
acodega 2 years ago
think of a wave on the ocean crashing in on itself and surfers harnessing that energy. Its called a hydrolic on the river.
CFlem18 2 years ago
I must be stupid or something. I still do not understand why the water on the surface is going backwards against the current.
scotjack 2 years ago
@scotjack
Ok, there is water above the "hole" dropping in from both sides creating high powered eddies. Once you get stuck and the eddies pull you in you're SOL until you get pushed out somehow.
