The most subliminal symbol throughout the video was the RED, BLACK and GREEN(Marcus Garvey) flag within the background. Prince was definitely consciously enlightened in the 80's.
Few years ago I was listening to an album were Chick Corea did a Fender Rhodes solo on and whilst listening at this sort of obscured solo, deep in the mix something struck me... I've heard that before. I sat there beating my head at where I have heard that! I listening over and over at this improvisation part and it hit me!
The horn motif that starts at "breakdown" that starts at 2:30 ! That repeating odd horns riff is a Chick Corea solo part!
@SaipanDreams I have this version live from France, it was ripped off Youtube at almost 9 minutes, the maxi single at 21 minutes of America from 1985! That is a LONG song and I beleive the longest Prince ever made public..
out of all his albums "around the World in a day" certainly was one of the most eclectic. It came right after Purple Rain and was completely different from it. Back then every new albunm was an adventure of its own. I remeber buying them and thinking: "Ok, this is the one I'm not gonna like, afer all". It would last for two or three days; then I'd be hooked, addicted, onece more and ever again. Fantastic!
this song did not get its due way back when and it still rocks! Prince is a lesser God! Prince should have let people love him on YouTube sooner! and where do we buy this song? I-Tunes? anyone know?? Thanks in advance!
i know of a good Prince site. i mentioned it on my podcast called Earth, wind and water. you could find this show on my video of the same name. Also check for my video called Mint condition - cant get away (for more Prince)
One of my favorites but its longer with Prince taking over the Drums for Bobby Z...Will someone please post the 21 min version of the studio record...I love the extra 21 min until the tape runs out....
It looked like they were straight havin fun on stage with this cut. Man those days are so GONE. we need stuff like this to revive the music industry. Its goin nutts now. Wow, memories and information that kept us dancin. Go man.
I remember going to this concert way back in the day! Prince was always a nasty freaky little bastard and I still love him. The man can play the hell outta that guitar, dance, and sing....all while wearing lace, high heels, and nut-cruncher pants. He could play "I'm A Little Tea-cup" and get me excited. :-D
I owe PRINCE the most gracious THANK YOU because after the 1993 concert here in Atlanta also named the Blizzard of 93 my beloved 1st born was created after that nite of such a wonderful concert. THANK YOU purple majesty 4 setting the mood that I will always cherish.

Who are the two idiots that gave this a "dislike", this might be one of the greatest live preformances you'll ever see... Even made Jimi smile...... Prince rulez
@kim123792 Today's generation dont stand a chance baby! They are too busy ripping off other people's shit, doing karaoke, and being as fake as possible! Plus, rap and hip hop destroyed music for good! All we have are a bunch idiot bimbos singing about "Umbrellas and Single Ladies bullshit!"
@kim123792 You do realize he's got "electronic" drums right? (in the electronic drums are actual COMPUTER circuitry) And you do realize what you just said, was exactly what YOUR parents said about Prince? "Put down the electronic drums kids - and PLAY real music like the Beatles did!" (The narcissism on Youtube when it come to music, never ceases to astound me)
Thank you Jemsweb. I have this some grainy old video tape. Afraid to watch cause it might break. Brings back great memories!!! One of my all time fav albums!!!
Prince actually liked Ronal Reagan- so as for this track being a "saracstic" view of America I think its more of a new cool anthem- and is not anti patriotic
@brbgal Sheila E was not a member of The Revolution, and so at this time did not appear on stage except as featured guest. A couple records later, during the sessions for Sign O' The Times, Prince enlisted a mostly new band lineup which then included Sheila E, Eric Leeds, and other additions. as for the new national anthem, this is more a sarcastic take on what America meant at the time. (See: Ronnie Talk To Russia as well). 55436 in the mix!
just to let you know there is a 9:49 long version it's on this page but this performance was so great esp because Wendy was so free to do her thing in it! She did get solos and recognition in the early days - but she was a great player and contributed so much to the band. ty for the post!
I had the pleasure to work for Brown Mark (bass player) when he was managing a band called Mazeratti (sp) that Prince brought up. They would play one of the bars I worked for in Minn., and the last song they always played was America, and Brown Mark would get up on stage and play the drums for it. It usually developed into a 20-30 minute jam session. Simply amazing!! Something I will NEVER forget in my life.
This is the day when it did not take a Russian Troop of Aerobic Dancers on stage to entertain an audience. The true definition of working the crowd to the low down dirty floor; artist have been trying sisce then to duplicate this electricity IN MY OPINION none have been able to thus far...but there is always hope!
Back in an '85 Rolling Stone interview, Prince shared his support for Reagan and he was criticized for it, it came across a little green. But at the core of the lyrics of this song are very accurate observations. Its not about political parties, the song could very well be about the loving a country that can be frustrating and unfair to live in. Its not a happy song, but its a proud song. A very Gemini song Prince wrote here!
The bomb goo BOOM! Wow, sure represents living in cold war 80's!
IF GOD SHARED HIS GRACE ON AMERICA.THEN AMERICA WILL NOT BE LIKE IT IS..FULL OF HATE,IGNORANCE MURDER RAPES CRIMES AGAINST WOMEN AND KIDS.CORRUPTED GOVERMENT.FOOD THAT KILLS NOW.ETC..WELCOLM TO AMERICA
I always loved the way the band danced in unison. There's just something ultra fantastic about that. Synchronicity. I think it shows how all those musicians in The Revolution were his contemporaries, on the same wave length, they were more than hired musicians.
TRIVIA no one will ever figure out - and I'll ask Eric one day about this - @ 2:32 the horn motif they jam on - its from Miles Davis Bitches Brew! I discovered it once while doing critical listening of that album! Who knew!
I remember this Black Radio and some of us older fans were saying Prince wouldn't "funk no mo" since he got his "crossover pass" and sold out to da man, then P played this jam in Paris and unloaded a whole ton of FUNK on us saying "I'm still the kid muthafucka" !!!
unlike all these artists who will remain unnamed who hire people to produce, write and play the music on there songs, Prince does it all!! One of a Kind! A master of several genre's of music. Can you honestly say that about anyone else?
This is the video that really made me want to see Prince in concert. Three years later I did just that and four more times since. Prince is the single best performer I have ever seen in concert. It really is something to behold.
