This is one of Rutherford's nicest bass parts IMO - to try and replicate it with a bust string must have been a nightmare - but carried off well by Mr. Cadbury.
@welshhibby Well, um, no, sorry. I just saw Steve live last night and Gary O'Toole(the drummer) sang not only this, but Blood On The Rooftops and Broadway Melody of 1974. And he sounded GREAT. Peter Gabriel he's not, but he's a more than suitable stand-in.
well i could be wrong, but he seems to be dick cadbury, the bass player steve "used" in his first solo band in 1978 to record Spectral mornings and Defector...could he be?
i`ve heard that song in diverse versions as well in concerts for a thousand times , still get shivering and staring with open eyes........as long as mankind is able to create such songs and lyrics we have not lost !!
Let's face it : I also preferred the "Second's out"-version, this here hurts at several places, the kbd intro lacks pace and application, the bass is lost in many passages, the drummer sings and plays as he can but can certainly compete in no way with Phil (nor Peter) ! And then, why having a brilliant flutist on stage and let him play the most crucial part of this song (except the legendary guitar-solo, of course) on a soprano-sax ????
@Rochinator1 Hey, at least Roger King can PLAY THE SOLO. Genesis discarded it after a short while because? Because Tony Banks(who hates this song) kept flubbing it.
I agree with you guys, not the best version, but I strongly believe it's quite better than the one performed by Tony, Mike and Phil perhaps Daryl in the last 32 years, this is actually very accurate and well performed, despite Steve's band members are making a great effort in order to play faithfully, to me, Steve's performances are always immaculate, and it shows...
Hmm. I don't think this was their best performance so far. This band formation wasn't up to Hackett's standard in my opinion. The song wasn't pure, except the sax and guitar solo parts. I give it 3 out of 5.
Unbelievable,he is one great guitarist, and great band, well done...

I think the drummer should concentrate on the drums, and Steve should hire a real singer

Steve and band (diff. bass man) did this at the Robin 2 Bilston recently.
Steve said.... "please help out with the vocals"........well let me you........we sung our bloody hearts out!!

Nick Beggs? I saw Hackett in London, but Beggs' stage antics where a bit unwelcome, especially while Steve barely moves at all!

i think one string is missing on his bass, maybe for that reason he found hard play well...
hogweed89 2 years ago
doesn't matter...he can play those notes on the other 3 strings...he clearly has no theory knowledge...I wonder why steve even hired him.

Broken string or not, the bassist has no business playing this song.

But Steves guitar playing has not lost anything of its fascination through all the years ...
