haha. Love her glamamous leather jacket. Truly amazing person, versatile of a voice. Just want to hear her one day go form this pop and blast a high note at the very end.
Her voice is beautiful, no question there. However she really can't get the emotion that Muse gets. Matt's voice makes it more slow, sad, and yearning, which is absolutely gorgeous. Although Renee's voice is pretty, this song is quite average compared to Muse's masterpiece.
Urggh this is horrible. I'm going to have to listen to the original to make myself feel better now. Bloody hell why can't people grasp that Muse are too good for anybody to cover?
I'm a huge Renee Fleming fan... but this is a bit cringe-inducing. She needs people around her who tell her "no" once in a while. Then again, there are people, even in these comments, who say they didn't know who she was and now they do. So what do we say about that? I don't know...
@novasafo This actually wasn't her idea. The producers of this album came to HER because they wanted an opera singer to do an album of pop/rock songs. TBH, I think Renee Fleming fans have a bigger problem with this than people who didn't know who she was. I mean, it's not the greatest artistry, but I don't find it offensive.
@bmh4d0k3n you make a very good point! I guess maybe it is because I'm such a huge fan that this album comes across as so wrong. It just seems so contrived and inauthentic. I don't find it offensive, though. I even thought "Hallelujah" was pretty good. If she had just made some different choices when venturing out in music like this... then again, who am I to say... at least she's willing to take risks
@novasafo I dont see whats so wrong about this album. I adore Renee and she is truly my idol. I think her experimenting like this is wonderful! Tarja Turunen made it acceptable to have classically trained sopranos in metal but I think that with Renee Fleming doing a cross-over album, opera trained sopranos (like myself) who want to go into heavy metal will be a bit more welcomed at least I hope this is the case. :]
@novasafo btw I saw Renee sing this at the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Hall Concert Hall in Costa Mesa and it was amazing! She looked like she was enjoying herself :]
What? She ruined this song. You just can't compare this song to the original: Matt's voice is way better, he wrote this song and he knows how to make us fall in tears, she can't do that. She ruined this song.
she have a nice voice but she doesnt even sing the words that matt do and matt is perfect in every single way. even in 1994 when they couldnt play and barley sing. no one can cover muse and matt.
Pathetic! The first job of a talented singer who has had amazing opportunities is to respect and fulfill that gift. What can it possibly do for her to engage in mediocre karaoke? Very very sad--- What's going on in her head? Is it greed?? This woman WAS a fine artist-- even the classical offerings have slipped into affectation and mediocrity-- mediocrity at a high level-- but that makes it all the more disappointing.
D': Noo!!! Noo!!! I Don't Like It!! Muse Is Better!! No Should Be Aloud To Cover Muse Songs!!! No One At All! MUSE Is MUSE!! This Is No Good! No Can Be As Good As Muse!! No One!!!:'(
Yuck...gross.I can't stand her weird diction and mannerisms, not to mention her lack of energy and passion in these songs...Boring...Boring...Boring.Sometimes she even sounds almost off key on many of these songs.Dark Hope is more like Dark Nightmare.
@WolfenRose This song is brilliant, nothing can ruin it! One of my all time favourites along with Hallelujah by Cohen (I prefer Jeff Buckley version). I can listen to it eternally.
I love the song because of Muse. The version from Muse is better because I'm addicted to Muse. But I think we can't compare those two songs. She made it a whole other song. And Excuse me for my bad English ;)
I don't understand those people who are repeating "Muse's was better". This voice is absolutely amazing and Muse's is not even close to it. I respect Muse and like his songs (especially "the thought of a dying atheist") but seems some people don't feel the beauty in Renee's voice.
If someone is re-singing a song it doesn't necessarily mean that he/she is not better than the original singer.

@tenor220 1. I don't give a shit that you're an opera major. 2. Yes, some random stranger on the internet is going to make me cry. wahwah. I want my mommy. You wish.

I hate how some people insist on Fleming's cover being vetter than Muse's original and give them no credit for creating the very song they idolize right now.
but this is a cover of a Muse's song from the album Absolution (2003). They should have written that it's a cover.. By the way, I don't like it, I prefer the Muse's version.
@JEA21B If you haven't heard the album, you can find song samples on Amazon. It's great. It's definitely different from her opera voice, but it's a fantastic CD.
@Katrine28091996 Amelia is Renee's oldest daughter. She's standing @ 2:06 until 2:09 with Renee's sister, Rachel. Rachel is also seen again at 2:12 singing behind Renee and again at 2:35 standing next to the man with the umbrella. Sage is at 0:24. That *may* be Amelia at 2:30 but I'm not sure. Absolutely love Rachel's shoes @ 2:35. Pause it at 3:24 and Rachel is on the far left of the screen and Amelia is on the far right of the screen.
@LDC454 Thank you. I thought that Amelia, at 02:30. Because, that girl is very similar on Ren. There all three are similar, and here daughters only two.
It turns out, if that Amelia that in a dark green coat she already has outgrown the mother.
@hollthegreat I know this but Rachelle can also be spelled Rachel and Renee has referred to her sister as "Rachel" as Jennifer Anniston's character from Friends before in interviews.
I am sorry she may be world's best opera singer, but in this style her voice just isn't appealing. The whole thing doesnt grab me. I'd say it's a weak attempt. It's neither opera, nor rock nor pop, not even cross over. I don't know what this is, probably a classical star who wants to be famous in the mainstream world. Also the song is bad, it's like u r waiting for a chorus and it never comes. Just goes to show that classical musicians have no business doing other stuff, because they can't.
What is remarkable is versatile she is ,one day is singing verismo them baroque, gospel, bachianas brasileiras, jazz and now pop(and the next day Handel)
People like sarah brightman destroy opera arias in order to suit for their uneducated voices and sell records such a pitty,But Renee is a lady and can sing everything, she can sing well and she sings honestly you can see that she is not for the money and doesn't care to be the "best selling soprano ever" she just have the gift and the grace
Is the girl at 1:44 and again at 1:53 one of Renee's daughters? What about the shot at 2:09? Is that her daughter on the left and her sister on the right? I know she said her kids were in this video and they sing backup on the CD along with her sister, Rachelle. Is that Rachelle at 2:37? Thanks. =)
@WorshipMeDammit - Amelia is the oldest. She has the curly hair and is at 2:09 standing next to Rachel (Renee's sister with the dark hair. Rachel is also singing backup at 2:15). Sage is her youngest. She's standing by herself against the fence at 0:27.
LOVE this song and I LOVE her voice. I didn't know who Renee Fleming was before I heard "In Your Eyes" on Sirius's "The Blend" channel. Bought the Dark Hope disc and it's my favorite disc.
Even though I didn't expect it, I really really like the album. I also love Renee's deep voice which I've heard on many other songs in the past. But this video?? Nothing fits together. What do the punk kids have to do with the song?? And why would a "leather girl" be longing for a guy that looks like an accountant??
I love the quiet depth to her voice when she sings pop. A little bit Annie Lennox, a little bit Carly Simon. Idea: duet with her & Glambert. Jus'sayin'.
Me encanta el grupo Muse y ésta versión de Endlessly me parece una maravilla, si bien me gusta más la original, Renée es un auténtico prodigio, mil gracias por versionar una de las mejores canciones de ésta década Réene!!
RE: the clip from HarvardArts; the aria that Renee is working on with the student is "The Trees on the Mountains" from Carlisle Floyd's "Susannah," a role wich Renee performed early in her career. She speaks of wanting to perform this aria in recital as an eleven-year-old, and her mother (a voice teacher) suggesting she find something else, as some of the lyrics would be inappropriate coming from someone so young!
For a bit of REAL education in the art of singing, go to the channel for HarvardArts and click on the video with Renee at the top of their list. This is part of a Master Class she gave there last winter. Renee earned a Master's degree in Music Education before she began her professional singing career. You can also learn a lot from her introductions to the operas and backstage interviews with the performers in the Met Live in HD telecasts, which are in theatres worldwide, and re-run on PBS.
I have long suspected that Scalatti is suffering from delusions of persecution, but recently I've come to suspect there are delusions of grandeur as well. Or maybe it's just simple arrogance -- now he thinks he has a mission to "educate" us! Another thought I've had for some time now: perhaps "Scalatti' IS, in fact, Cheryl Studer. That would make his/her rantings all the more pathetic. Folks, just click the "Vote Down" button beside any comments which you feel add nothing to the discussion.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@linnyloo2 You know, the "loo" in linnyloo2 is so apt. Scalatti is Cheryl any more than the Loo is Renee. Now, if you excuse me, I must dash for the nearest.....
Before posting thoughtless comments on Renee's appearance, I suggest you do a Google search, click on Images, and note if you observe any differences over the years. Also, you might observe the lip lines of her sister and daughters on this clip. Renee's lips are an essential part of her instrument, one that is widely regarded as one of the most glorious in the history of opera. She would NEVER do anything that might have a negative impact on that instrument. There's something called "makeup."
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It is telling that our arguments and fights are worthier, more educational and more exciting than the whole Dark Hope pablum. More exciting too than if all its CD-turned-coasters were gathered, piled up high and set afire.
For a tiny glimpse of the great sensitivity and compassion of this great artist, search "Renee Fleming sings Amazing Grace at WTC." This interview is from a PBS documentary. Renee has said that she felt an enormous responsibility to give comfort to all the grief-stricken people there, and practiced singing this song repeatedly for days beforehand. Note what she says about the children present. If only some of the posters here had an ounce of the compassion that Renee possesses!
@HelenaVillers No word yet, but you can follow her on Twitter (@reneesmusings) or check her official website from time to time. She's performing operas and concerts in Europe this summer, as well as filming a TV special of a full opera production, so I don't know when she'd find time. But Renee has an enormous capacity for hard work, so anything is possible! See her on ABC-TV on July 2nd ("America Celebrates the 4th of July") where she performs songs from the CD & "Battle Hymn of the Republic."
If Scalatti is not reprimanded for his impertinent "Parallel Universe" video, he certainly should be for his homophobic, unnecessary, and viscous comments posted on Renee's very own video. Studer may be your diva--but she's not ours. Fleming is our gorgeous, brilliant, multi talented, fantastic, and incredible gay-loving diva soprano. If you can't appreciate that--you're crazy!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@JordanSean FOR THE RECORD, the homophobic, unnecessary and viscous comment posted on the goddess' very own video was the work of your fellow Fleming-flapper PRIMOHOMME. Follow the thread - it's there visible to all. So do not for a second attempt to attribute falsehood to me. Are we understanding one another?
@Scalatti If I read correctly, it was PRIMOHOMME who clarified the difference between gays and tasteless people like you, while you were quick to suggest that Renee is useless without "faggots." I do believe the word "faggot", used in a derogatory fashion directed towards gays, is offensive to any and all who follow the conventions of political correctness, or to any who simply find homophobia a useless item of the past. Rest assured, no falsehood is ever attributed to you, Scalatti.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@JordanSean Nice try to discredit me again with *your* version of the truth. But you have to go a little further back in the thread to find the origin of the homophobic statement written by your fellow traveler in all things Fleming. 1 day ago PRIMOHOMME wrote:
@Scalatti My god, would you stop with the incredibly patronizing comments!? I do not care where the discussion began. It seems as though you have an insulting comment for every video featuring Renee Fleming, and yet you are totally incapable of admitting to any fault in your juvenile behavior. I highly doubt that your efforts to sway Fleming fans towards Studer will be met with avail. So really, what is the point?
There's a really simple way to remove the nastiness from this discussion of the work of this multi-talented artist and great ambassador for music. Simply place your cursor in the blank space to the right of the post, opposite the name of the poster whose comments you feel contribute nothing to the discussion and select the "thumbs down" /Vote Down symbol. Enough of these votes will result in those comments being hidden, even from videos that they've posted.

I appreciate her cover to this song. :)
but, I would take original one anyday :D
anyway, good cover compared to anyone else covering Muse's songs.

Why isn't there any significance to Muse on this? It's like this isn't a cover at all.
Muse's version is better. In my opinion, of course. You should definitely see it, and you'll understand why.

I really don't understand the correlation between the music video and the music...it's definitely entertaining.

For those who don't know this (which apparently means for everyone) this song is a cover of Muse's song Endlessly from their album Absolution.

@JEA21B If you haven't heard the album, you can find song samples on Amazon. It's great. It's definitely different from her opera voice, but it's a fantastic CD.

Amelia at 2:09?!
Who at 2:30, if Sage at 0:24-27and Amelia at 2:09?????
Katrine28091996 1 year ago
@Katrine28091996 Amelia is Renee's oldest daughter. She's standing @ 2:06 until 2:09 with Renee's sister, Rachel. Rachel is also seen again at 2:12 singing behind Renee and again at 2:35 standing next to the man with the umbrella. Sage is at 0:24. That *may* be Amelia at 2:30 but I'm not sure. Absolutely love Rachel's shoes @ 2:35. Pause it at 3:24 and Rachel is on the far left of the screen and Amelia is on the far right of the screen.
LDC454 1 year ago 46
@LDC454 Thank you. I thought that Amelia, at 02:30. Because, that girl is very similar on Ren. There all three are similar, and here daughters only two.
It turns out, if that Amelia that in a dark green coat she already has outgrown the mother.
Shoes at Rachel stunned!!!!

@hollthegreat I know this but Rachelle can also be spelled Rachel and Renee has referred to her sister as "Rachel" as Jennifer Anniston's character from Friends before in interviews.

Realmente no me canso de escuchar a Fleming con esta canción, estaba acostumbrado a su perfección operistica pero Dark Hope realmente me conquisto.

Amneris3 1 year ago
What is remarkable is versatile she is ,one day is singing verismo them baroque, gospel, bachianas brasileiras, jazz and now pop(and the next day Handel)
People like sarah brightman destroy opera arias in order to suit for their uneducated voices and sell records such a pitty,But Renee is a lady and can sing everything, she can sing well and she sings honestly you can see that she is not for the money and doesn't care to be the "best selling soprano ever" she just have the gift and the grace

-There is an effort to do something "artistic" here, the result comes out rather pitiful (ugly images, although the "daughters" are good looking).
-The photographer needs to re-think what he does for a living
-R Fleming sings gorgeously as always - the clip is almost dreadful (dont do something unless you do it really well)

Great MUSE cover. Not as good as Muse's original song, but decent nonetheless.

Great voice new fan and I hope that her "cross over" album inspires newbies to Opera to give it a try. I am lucky I live in a city that has an Opera.

Even though I didn't expect it, I really really like the album. I also love Renee's deep voice which I've heard on many other songs in the past. But this video?? Nothing fits together. What do the punk kids have to do with the song?? And why would a "leather girl" be longing for a guy that looks like an accountant??
I'm glad she did it all however.

RE: the clip from HarvardArts; the aria that Renee is working on with the student is "The Trees on the Mountains" from Carlisle Floyd's "Susannah," a role wich Renee performed early in her career. She speaks of wanting to perform this aria in recital as an eleven-year-old, and her mother (a voice teacher) suggesting she find something else, as some of the lyrics would be inappropriate coming from someone so young!
linnyloo2 1 year ago

@linnyloo2 You know, the "loo" in linnyloo2 is so apt. Scalatti is Cheryl any more than the Loo is Renee. Now, if you excuse me, I must dash for the nearest.....
Scalatti 1 year ago
Before posting thoughtless comments on Renee's appearance, I suggest you do a Google search, click on Images, and note if you observe any differences over the years. Also, you might observe the lip lines of her sister and daughters on this clip. Renee's lips are an essential part of her instrument, one that is widely regarded as one of the most glorious in the history of opera. She would NEVER do anything that might have a negative impact on that instrument. There's something called "makeup."

Is she making more videos for Dark Hope?
HelenaVillers 1 year ago

Scalatti 1 year ago
@Scalatti If I read correctly, it was PRIMOHOMME who clarified the difference between gays and tasteless people like you, while you were quick to suggest that Renee is useless without "faggots." I do believe the word "faggot", used in a derogatory fashion directed towards gays, is offensive to any and all who follow the conventions of political correctness, or to any who simply find homophobia a useless item of the past. Rest assured, no falsehood is ever attributed to you, Scalatti.

@JordanSean Nice try to discredit me again with *your* version of the truth. But you have to go a little further back in the thread to find the origin of the homophobic statement written by your fellow traveler in all things Fleming. 1 day ago PRIMOHOMME wrote:
@Scalatti
"NOBODY cares about Studer, that out of tune nobody! Only stupid little faggots like you who like canaries."
Herein lies the ORIGIN of the homophobic statement. Are we in the clear yet?
Scalatti 1 year ago
@Scalatti My god, would you stop with the incredibly patronizing comments!? I do not care where the discussion began. It seems as though you have an insulting comment for every video featuring Renee Fleming, and yet you are totally incapable of admitting to any fault in your juvenile behavior. I highly doubt that your efforts to sway Fleming fans towards Studer will be met with avail. So really, what is the point?
JordanSean 1 year ago 3
There's a really simple way to remove the nastiness from this discussion of the work of this multi-talented artist and great ambassador for music. Simply place your cursor in the blank space to the right of the post, opposite the name of the poster whose comments you feel contribute nothing to the discussion and select the "thumbs down" /Vote Down symbol. Enough of these votes will result in those comments being hidden, even from videos that they've posted.
