This song is a surrealist song about a chaotic, corrupt and decaying fantasy land that Dylan thought up. Key word is SURREAL. All of you Jesus freaks need to quit bitching.
i worked this song oiut in its entirety , but i was on a complete ballistic rocket bi polar high , it still makes sense to me now but i had to go so high to get it
i worked this song out once, i was in a pshychiatric ward when i did it, i challenge a sane man to do it, he will find a lot of truths, but it does'nt matter inside the gates of eden#
This song proves Bob was a closet Bible belter even in '65,as its theme has as its foundation the Jewish myth re. the Garden of Eden: Human kind has been collectively exiled from the holy garden ever since Adam&Eve were driven out. A dreary mythology. In oriental religions there was no original sin, no exile...But Bob was also an I Ching enthusiast & in '65 said something like "the I Ching is the only thing that's completely true, period"! But I guess the dreary Bible won out eventually.Oh well.
@Bobjb999 I'm sure Bob, myself and many other people would disagree with you but that's the beauty of great art. We each have our own perceptions and interpretations.
@Bobjb999 - Very cynical here. You were sayng that the Garden of Eden is myth and therefore Adam and Eve were too.
Can't agree. It all began there. John Milton the famous English poet who was also a scholar of the Bible in Paradise Lost acknowledged the Biblical account of what happened there.
Humans are in the pickle we're in today because of Adam and Eve's disobedience. With respect, what can you tell us, as eloquently as the Bible does, why things are as they are today?
@paul72kate how does the bible state it, that so many other religious books, which in your eyes are false, dont? there mostly the same. and how can the bible be so right about certain things, and so wrong on others?
@ralphcraddock Hahaha, I agree it's a great song, but I don't know how relevant it is. Dylan himself said he doesn't know what this song is about. He just strung together lines he thought sounded good. :P
Thanks so much for posting!! The B side of Like a Rolling Stone, I had the 45 as a very young teen and loved this song...played it over and over. I think it's one of Dylan's best works, ever!!

"All and all can only fall
With a crashing but meaningless blow"
"As he weeps to wicked birds of prey
Who pick up on his bread crumb sins"
"While paupers change possessions
Each one wishing for what the other has got"
this guy is a real worder all right

@Bobjb999 If you ever saw "Don't Look back" you know Dylan read the bible even then... He knows it but he doesn't believe in it. Funny book though
