In fact i believe there is every possiblity that this will come to be.
On topic, Repo men isnt a musical and the mambo referance is a humanists look at the back and forth of the ethics of the main charector, genetic opera was decent but no match
I just watched Repo Men ondemand Purely out of curiousity, I was sick, and so I could defend R!TGO so I'm gonna say simpily worst 2 hours of my life right up there with watching Avatar in Imax 3D way to close and got the worst headache. Repo men is SO boring I didn't care for any of the characters the plot was dull and there were only like one scenes I laughed at (that being a 9 year being a black market surgen). So yeah don't waste your time with it.
Personally, legality aside, as a writer, not being able to say "I came up with my own plot/idea" is just embarrassing, I haven't seen Repo Men, so i don't really know if it's a true rip off (sounds that way, and I am inclined to think it is) however, Repo! Opera is much more important to alot more people then Repo Men will ever be
@wtzOlt Actually, R!TGO is not an opera, it's a "rock opera," also known as a musical. Although, plenty of people like operas, too, btw. I'm guessing you do not, but, well, many people do.
I suppose, as they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. The good thing about the copycat is that it is (from everything I've heard) really pretty dire. Bad publicity for them is good publicity for Repo!

Maybe repo men was copying. But they damn sure did a better job of communicating the base idea for both films than the genetic opera, watching genetic opera was litterally painful for my brain, face it, it sucked. but repo men was completely awesome, (other than the crappy twist at the very end) besides if u actually watched both, its obvious that the only idea that repo men copied (if they did copy) was the general idea that offered the back bone of both story lines
it doesnt matter which you think is better dude. they completley copied repo! and the book was copied from repo! as well. obviously you will like repo men better, its an action movie
I can honestly say, I was a little apalled by Repo Men. The book seems to follow the movie, from the bit I have read... But there are some similarities that I refuse to ignore. I was angered, but saw the movie. It really wasn't great, in my opinion, and I did tell a few people to check out RTGO, and they liked it much better.
Which movie will we be talking about for years to come? That is for you to decide.
That's disgusting as hell that they stole this incridible movie. It's exactly like S.Darko was, a hollycrap compares to the original. Just a bench of bullshit. Poor Terrance who had first the idea.
@TFluver Both Fictional drugs serve different purposes to the story. Both of them are fictional variants of Ecstasy, called X.
Why can't you fans just be reasonable for a minute? The moment the first organ transplant was done, this idea stopped being original. The idea of repo men coming for organs after you don't pay is a LOGICAL step for Sci Fi writers. So it's a generic plot that you people think is so very original, and are jumping the gun.....
i just found out about Repo Men today and was so shocked and appalled. I was so thinking "They should sue their asses off" but then i found out that Repo Men is based on a book. Probably losely based, either that or the book isn't that good. You get the generic plot basicaly spelled out for you in the trailer. Genetic Opera will last for ages and i hear they want to make a prequel and sequel. I got confused at 1st, I thought RepoMen was a prequel LOL I was like "where's the songs?" LOL
I for one admire Darren for being so respectful, but...hoo boy, this reeeally crosses the line here. I'm with Terrence and Alexa. ILLEGAL DOWNLOADS AND VIOLENCE, GO!
I also plan to stick my head into a theater playing Repo Men on my way through to a movie I WANT to see, shout "YOUR MOVIE IS A STEAMING PILE OF PLAGIARISM," and run off singing a Repo! song (I'm letting my dA friends pick which one). Should be quite fun. *rubs hands together evilly*
I was wondering what Darren and Terrance had to say about this. That must hurt, after so much work. Take pride in an unique interpretation and execution of the concept (to me, the music is what made it something amazing and memorable). But concepts are fair game to new interpretation.
Repo Men could be used by the fandom to publicize RtGO... I've already gotten a few people interested, after they talked to me about the preview for it and I steered the conversation to RtGO. Just an idea. :)
I vote for violence! They should seriously take many for the guys who ACTUALLY steals their ideas, I mean I can't be a coincidence when the people behind Repo Men, also showed up during the filming of Repo! The Genetic Opera, and uses almost same name and concept for their movie, something just tells me it's not a coinsidence it's more or less, stealing. I feel sorry for Terrance, I know how he must feel it's depressing and sad to see your own work get stolen right in front of your eyes!
Yeaaah you're probably right. Haha I just enjoy standing up for it. I must admit it doesn't rhyme, but I actually like the soundtrack, especially Zydrate Anatomy..stuck in my head forever.
I agree. Yes, Repo Men may be more talked about after it's release (at least for a short while), and it may be more successful at the box office, but Repo Men will be like any other action movie out there, and it won't make a huge impact, positively or negatively, on the audience it is targeted for.
Repo! The Genetic Opera will prevail, no matter if it is with a huge mainstream audience, or just a small group of devoted fans.
I hate Repo Men (Reposession Mambo) for stealing this idea. It's THEFT and theives should NOT be tolerated. R!TGO Has been around for 10 years, and is still strong, then 'Repo Man' happens? Come on. This is blatant theivery, no question.
Did anyone actually read the "Alleged Similarities" ?
Repomen in both movies "use Scalpels". Right..... Both movies have evil organizations... Yeah, a lot similarities. Most of them so miniscule there really shouldn't be an argument. Oh, here's a good one: In Repo Men they are Bio Repo Men, in Repo: The Genetic Opera they are Organ Repo Men....
What the hell? They have a vaguely similar plot, and about two other ACTUAL similarities on the list.
@cjcrashoveride You do know that Repo! The Genetic Opera has been around for a VERY long time, right? It's been a stage musical, and in it's original concept has been around for over 10 years.
The book has been being written for that long? They should find a new author.
@DigitalxWarrior Who should find a new author? The guy has been writing the book for going on 10 years now. It took Steven King 10+ years to finish some of his Dark Tower books and he's a best selling author. Just because someone has been writing for a long time doesn't mean they are a bad writer.
War and Peace took years and years to write but Tolstoy spent almost every waking hour writing that book (what else is there to do when you're snowed in?).
@cjcrashoveride It just seems very suspicious to me that the book has supposedly been being written all that time when Repo! was created all that time ago, too.
I know it doesn't mean they are a bad writer, in fact, it probably means the book will be better, because the author has had so much time to perfect it, but I still find it very, very odd.
I have nothing against the book or whatever, but this is my opinion, and I'm an avid Repo! supporter.

@TwinBee - Maybe Eric Garcia's movie will turn out to be better than Repo, y'know, because it won't be littered with repetitive "songs" with hardly any rhyming words written by a 14 year old Hot Topic emo kid who worships Avril (Shilo) and Evanescence (Blind Mag). And you can't really copyright a plot, if you -could- then the makers of Battle for Terra would've already sued James Cameron for Avatar.
Technically you can copyright a plot, you can't copyright an idea. If there were a lot of similarities between REPO and Repossession Mambo, then there would be a lot of question. The fact that there isn't a lot of similarity in the actual plots of the movies, there's just the general idea of repossessing organs. It's an idea, not a plot.
Oh, and Battle for Terra, I almost guarentee has not been in the works as long as Avatar. James Cameron has been working on Avatar for over ten years.
The only reason that it hasn't been produced until now, is that the computer graphics are just now becoming good enough that he felt it would make the greatest impact.
But as for REPO, I think it will perservere, because RM is just like any other action movie out there. Oh, and that whole Avril and Evanescence cock and bull.... Utter nonsense, who says music has to rhyme? Who says that during an OPERA no song should sound the same, and give the whole thing a reoccuring theme? Just saying...

Starvin - It's not that I flat out hate musicals, just that the majority of the ''songs'' in Repo tend to just be words thrown together, or the same sentence repeated over and over atleast 6 or 7 times. I can see the songs having a ''theme'' but it seemed like whoever was writing the lyrics was just trying to fill time not make anything memorable. And Shilo totally is Avril, right down to the whiny teen angst, and Mag looks like she stole her outfits from Amy Lee during the Fallen era.

Starvin - Oh, and Battle for Terra, I almost guarentee has not been in the works as long as Avatar. James Cameron has been working on Avatar for over ten years. - And in the case of either (RtGO vs. RepoMen / BfT vs. Avatar) can anyone really tell who ripped who off first? Probably not. Does anyone actually care besides RtGO fans? Nope. Will RtGO fans boycotting the movie really matter? Not really, since most who'll go to see Repo Men probably never heard of RtGO (and they're lucky for that).
you're right with Battle for Terra and Avatar but Avatar is a complete carbon copy of Fern Gully which came out way before Cameron's thought of Avatar.
Ya know, I love The Genetic Opera. And I always will. I'll give Repo Men (Repossession Mambo) a chance, but I doubt that it's going to be anywhere near as good as the original. I've seen the trailer for it, and yeah, there are differences, but not an excruciatingly noticeable plot change. Except for the fact that one of the repo men needs a new, MECHANICAL heart, and cannot keep up with the payments. So then he has to be hunted down by his former colleagues.

Ironically, the titular Mambo has nothing to do with any actual dance or music. It's the metaphoric use of mambo, referring to the runaround repo men get from their "clients", and the dance of death between a repo man delinquent on payment and his own repo man.
Reposession Mambo novel is currently out; you can probably borrow it from your local library. I've read it, and the plot summary of Repo! The Genetic Opera is NOTHING like RM. (I haven't had opportunity to watch R!TGO in my market.)
For you to suggest to me that while you've never seen the Genetic Opera film, I should go on out and read the book is very presumptuous of you. I have read Mambo and seen Opera so I'd know better than you. The idea that the novel's title involves a musical phrase when there is another organ repossession story featuring a musical phrase is hard to buy purely as coincidence. Especially now that they've gone ahead and changed the title for the film to get away from that "coincidence".
@nomad879 The musical phrase in Mambo though was in reference to the style of writing and had nothing to do with actual music. Also the Genetic Opera movie sucked lol.
I find a difference in his analogy. Meteors crashing into Earth is more general than:
The not so distant future where organs can be bought because of an epidemic, and if you don't get your payments paid in time an assassin called a Repo Man will be sent after you.
But I'll probably give the new movie a chance. I lovedd The Genetic Opera!
As soon as I saw the trailer for Repo Men, I was so pissed. This is obvious theft and should not be tolerated. Repo! for life. <3
