great book, i've since read michelle alexander's "the new jim crow". what you learn is how the war on drugs morphed police depts into well funded military swat units networked by the fbi, funded by congress and supplied with military equipment by the pentagon. the 4th amendment among other civil protections are subsequently shredded by the scotus. the prison population and complex explodes. enter 9-11 and further police state expenditures for "terrorism". it's like watching fascism evolve.
