This video was extremely educating. I will pose this video for use within TUDelft Biomedical engineering, where this subject is covered as well, if this is ok for you.
I have had aortic and mitral valve replacement with tissue valves at the age of 50 and 52. Just had cardiac check-up and the valves are doing great, it has been almost 10 yrs and I am having no problems. Am still wondering how long they will last. I have been given many different time frames, would love to know if anyone has any more information on life spans of tissue valves.
This video has put my mind at rest a little bit. It's my nan who is undergoing a valve replacement in the next few weeks. Im still a little bit worried about it, but atleast now i know what is going to be happening and abit more about how the heart works etc.
Thanks for that explanation and introduction as I am due to have the aortic valve replaced soon. This had made me feel a bit better about the procedure.
Thank you! My beloved one had this operation 2 years ago, the surgery lasted for 14 hours, done by 3 major doctors of the clinic, and, since then, the valve ticking has been my most favorite sound.
Just had 2 of my heart valves replaced (aortic & mitral - Bentall procedure) last Dec.
Well, I'm still alive and kicking now. Only inconvenience now is having to take blood thinning medicine for the rest of my life (mech valves) plus listening to the constant ticking of the valves
@Diuneahma Had same valves replaced 10/06 and a bypass with veins from both legs. You'll get used to the ticking and won't even notice it after a while but other people will hear it. I'm taking 11.25 mg of Coumadin per day and get INR checked every six weeks if it is between 2.5-3.5, if not in that range, checked every three weeks until it's right by adjusting Coumadin dosage and/or diet (Vitamin K).
i appreciate this video because i hope to become a cardiologist one day...right now im am a biology major..but i plant to attend med school in about 2 more yrs so this is very excting..i know tht you are prbly rlll busy but it wld be great if u put more learning videos up..your a good teacher and im really excited about the learning process
thanks for sharing this video. Just one question, how did you sterilize your video camera for it to be safe enough to be used inside the operating room? looking forward for your answer.
This is really helpful. My dad is having Atrial valve replacement done next month and I've been really worried. These videos have helped a lot. Thanks for making them!
im getting a mvp surgery and im scared ive never had any sort of surgery does anyone know how long is the recuperation of the surgery afterwards and if its very painful? pleas let me know thank you
Thank you for the video it helped me alot. My doctor just informed me that he thinks one of my Valves are not opening when it should be. For years Ive had problems breathing, pressure on my chest, pains. etc. Im only 22 yrs old. I go for my Echocardiogam friday so Im praying its something surgery not needed for, But thanks for helping me understand my situation better.
Doctor, my family doctor said I had a "stiff" valve due to aging. My ekg is normal. I'm 59 years old. Should I see a cardiologist sooner or later? Thank for the video.

i just had a mitral valve replacement (mechanical) a week ago. I'm still recovering and in pain especially on my back. Breathing is a lot better now.

If you have a mechanical heart valve and have trouble sleeping, but you don't want to
use drugs to sleep - you can purchase a psychoacoustic audio recording with the title
"Heartbeat River" at cdbaby.com.

Which valve lasts longer? The mechanical or tissue valve?
SGolaszewski 1 year ago
@SGolaszewski Mechanical but this means you need to undergo anticoagulation therapy.
The tissue ones from pigs and cows last less i think 15 years? but are bio-compatible so you dont need anticoagulant therapy.
So i think that they use the bio for older individuals and the mechanical for younger

@SGolaszewski - mechanical

You're welcome - that means it worked. I hope that it helps people facing valve replacement surgery to understand what is done.
