  • It's NOT a german quality, the components come from a noname country,

beacause it's cheaper for the VW AG and it was assembled in another noname

    country from the same reason.

  • It's probably the throw-out bearing. Still nothing but an overpriced German POS, though.

Then again, the 1.4 and 1.6 gasser trannies have had issues with the rivets holding the ring gear to the differential shearing out. And they've had it for a long time. There's even bolt kit out for it.

Exactly the problem helgih580's had, whether he knows it or not.

  • Never had transmission problems with my Golf MK4 and it has nearly 200.000km... but then again it's a TDI, with a solid 5speed gearbox.

  • I googled ''VW ERT Gearbox'' and clicked the first link which said ''VW gearbox failure'' . This is exactly what happened to mine, a hole punched through (although at 60.000 miles rather than 50.000 miles). This kinda sucks because now I know that the gearbox that I got instead will fail as well even with special care :(. Mine is however 98 model (says it only affects 99 and up but that was NOT so in my case).

  • I have a 98 Golf GL 1.6 and the transmission broke down around 60,000 miles. Apparently there was a hole in it and most of the oil leaked out (I had put oil in it the year before and you shouldn't have to babysit it). Then when I went on a long trip it overheated and got damaged. Shortly after, the bearing for my clutch broke so there was a horrible noise (but still somewhat usable). I was lucky since this was over a year ago, now all golfs with these trannies are failing and prices have doubled

  • how much for the fix? and was it any harD?

  • I would care if you hear the sound while driving, this might be some ordinairy clutch sound too.

  • Comment removed

  • VW Beetle could be fixed with just a flat screwdriver, a spanner, a pair of pliers and some steel wire...

  • it is the FLYWHEEL

  • guys what about getting a automatic transmission fail @ 65000km and having to pay 10000USD to get it fixed. Thanks Volkswagen for the low quality product! Now at 75000km I have an AC problem where they expect me to pay another 2000USD. This is the worst car ever!

  • My brother had a head on collision at 30km/h with his 2000 model golf and it burst into flames... My 2002 golf is a piece of shit, was was my 1994 golf, so was my dads 2006 golf 2.0tdi. All our volkswagens have been very unreliable. Mk3 was the worst, but my mk is a close second with coolant corrosion issues... my coolant system and every hose is fucked, it's like a siv..

  • i dont know ur knowing on vw but i had a vw jetta for 7 years and i never had any probkems with it.its shurely a defect on the car or a malfunction but tis not vw quality

  • man should have bought a honda. even a honda on its last leg wouldnt sound like this. watch "killing a honda" even when they pour water in the motor it still doesnt sound like this vw. i own a honda and a vw and an audi I have never had a problem out of my hondas. the audi the vw are money pits. lure you in with cheap price and sporty look then WHAM we make our money servicing the P.O.S.

  • VWs have always been junk.

The "Guide for the Compleat Idiot" (muir) was perfectly named. John Muir inadvertantly called it right. Anyone with a second VW has done the same thing over, expecting different results. Dope smoking hipsters broken down on the side of the road, all 'round the world, waiting on a "straight" to stop and bail them out. Celebrate 30 years of "failure-management". Maybe they should be Obamawagons.

  • it is the same with my moped when i press clutch no noise and when not pressing clutch it is some strange noise in neutral

  • I think your problem is that youve fallen into the same trap that I have done in the past (but wont do in the future) and bought an overrated, badly made german car on the say so of so called experts. Ive owned 7 in the past and all have been naff, neverending electrical and trim issues along with rotting windscreen rubbers have made me want to sell my current BMW 7 series, I will stick with boring and uninteresting Jap stuff in the future, Im sick of this Kraut rubbish!

  • Yea you sound like the type that would drive a civic. Good riddance to you. You don't deserve german luxury anyways.

  • We're commenting in yet another video of a badly made VW and you still feel it necessary to defend these shitty cars, "German Luxury"??? what a fuckin laugh, youre deluded pal, you really are!

  • if its a duu gearbox (i have a mk 4, but i dunno if its the same as one in a mk5), the pins have probly sheared off the spur gear etc, unfortunately they cost abt£500 for a new one. kinda suck but i no it happens with most boxes with that code :( i had to get a new one after 70k

  • that is your throw out bearing, i have the same problem with my 88 accord lx-i. change her out and she should be good! :)

  • VW sucks....

  • Why does everyone defend these horrible german cars? Ive owned 7 in the past and without exagerration all have been badly made dogs, unreliable and terrible to drive.. I honestly cannot believe why people like them so much! Did the germans agree to lose ww2 in exchange for the UK and US to love their crappy products forever?!? Even other German stuff is crap, Miele products last a week before they break down, so called long lasting german made Lightbulbs last for 6 hours then blow! what thefuck

  • And so do you, ricer.

  • You are a complete arrogant prick sir, go fuck yourself and your aggressive comments...

  • I too hear noises when car is idle and clutch is not pressed, if I press clutch noises go away. I heard this after a service repaired my broken clutch disk.

    2001 Golf 4 1.6 16V ERT gearbox code.

The noise is is not very loud though.

  • Dude seriously take it from a mechanic that has been doing this for 15+ years. That my friend is a throwout bearing failure. That is why when you let the pressure off by lifting off the clutch pedal it gets louder. Do a clutch job and replace the throwout bearing as well.

  • I agree with you.

  • Thank you. At least someone sees the light. LOL

  • I think its more a failure of VW to make a proper gearbox that will last the length of the cars life, typical German crap!

  • Hey mickeymoose take your un-needed, un-wanted, un-educated opinions elsewhere. Just because you have bought a few lemons and expect everything to be perfect on every car, doesn't mean that german cars are crap. I can show you a nice brand new cadillac that has 2 broken window regulators and they are 400.00+ each and made of plastic. There are problems with all automotive products. Not just german. My 83 rabbit GTI hasn't been driven for 3 months and I can go twist the key and it fires right up.

  • "lemons"? out of over 30 cars I have had and traded over the years I have never had so many "lemons" which have all been German, every french, british and Jap car I have had has been ok, not perfect by ok, but the German stuff has been consistantly bad, and by the way son, I didnt insult you so dont insult me. I will never understand why you German lovers act so aggressively when your choice of car is critiscised?? Sad really how mislead you all are!

  • If VW stuff is so good, why are there thousands of people on YT and on the net with bad cars, endless and expensive faults due to design and quality faults, if they were even half decent you wouldn't see them... You dont see half as many Kias, Citroens or Fords etc posted so regularly with so many faults... jeez!

  • You speak of "bad cars" yet you fail to mention the neon with all it's transmission problems, and ford diesels lighting stuff on fire with the flame thrower exhaust and burning down houses because of electrical fires starting while they are parked in the garage. Find me ONE instance where a VW or german car has cost someone their home!

  • There are recent instances where 2004-2007 Golfs burst into flames for no apparent reason, there are at least two videos of this on youtube

  • The one vid I can think of, was a black gti that was set to one of weezers songs, was a result of an aftermarket turbo system that the owner forgot to install the heat shield around the turbo so it naturally caught fire. But basically what i was getting at is that all cars have problems. The problem this video is showing is a simple bearing failure on the throwout bearing. This can happen to ANY manual tranny. Be it american, german or asian.

  • Yup, it is definately the shaft bearing that connects the engine with the transmission. My toyota hilux suffers the same problem and I'm about to resolve it in a few weeks. The whole tranny must be pulled apart to change that shit... Did U check the oil level in the tranny ?
