Here in Atlanta there's some very good covers of Tom being played. And this song in particular in dark of a winter night... What can I say? Just the classic song writer.
i think tom waits can appeal to the broken down man more than anyone i've ever heard of. maybe second to elliott smith but tom waits pursued through it so that makes him a bigger man....but elliott smith knew some pain too
@ghasgfhag Very well spoken. I don't care what anyone thinks of Tom, to me he is wonderful in a can. The absolute best lyricist/performer and probably one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. He's Tom Waits!!!!!
Tom is an international traveler with good German shoes, Irish woolen socks, a half pint of Russian vodka & a cuban cigar in his jacket pocket and a three day stubble; down to his last Chesterfield filterless and he pissed that he left his lighter in the bus station on a rainy Wednesday night> He ponders the galaxy; his galaxy by the way; we just live in his cosmic dust. Don't make him madder or it'll only cause more earthquakes.
absolutely amazing... there is also a greek cover of this song called "xalia" sung by foivos delivorias... it's great too but it sounds totally different :p
Just The Boss, period. His performance of this and Tom Traubert's Blues are 2 of the greatest in the history of popular music, bar none. In any other world he would be considered one of the greatest artists that ever lived but those of us who love him don't care so what he hell..........
Thanks for the correction on the definition of "scat" singing. I sit corrected! I was mostly thinking of his "Step Right Up" but technically, that's not scat either. But I can't compare dear Tom to Louis Armstrong or Ella Fitzgerald. They set the unset mark...
If he was a businessman...would he donate the money he earns, for instance, when he prosecutes sb for copyrights violation?...
I like Tom, and the way he sings.I know there were loads os musicians whose music is far better, technically speaking, but the music i like the most is his. not just because of the music but because of tom himself.
He ain't pretentious, he's just true to himself. He is what he is and there's nth that could change that.
Not sure about your comment, about some musicians work being technically better. Tom Waits uses some very interesting/complex chord sequences and often plays modally, his main strength really is in the quality of the song writing.
I know what you mean. I love the man and the work he does(I got into him about a month ago and now I can't stop listening to him) but I let one of my friends hear step right up and he said the drummer must be bored cause he's just doing the same beat, same with the saxophonist.
what a pretentious motherfucker why can't he just sing why the hell does he have to force it like he's about to vomit all over that poor piano any minute
What gives you the right to call him "a pretentious motherfucker"?...
Is that all jealous or is there a little bit of hard ear and few musical instruction mixed in?...
Think twice before you come pointing fingers at people who's vallue has been already more than proved.Specially sb like Tom,who has more years playing and singing than you have just living.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Nothing. I do not have the right to call Thomas Waits a pretentious motherfucker. "Little bit of hard ear and few musical instruction"? "Value has been already more than proved"? In this video - which is what I commented - he sings like a pretentious motherfucker. He's a talented pretentious motherfucker, but he's a businessman as much, if not more so, than an artist. Also, my humble apologies.
Tom has created a persona that has developed over the years and, in my opinion, fits the mood of his music perfectly. There is nothing pretentious about it. Yes, he's pretending in that I do not think he acts exactly like that when he's at home with his wife and kids, but he is not claiming that this is his true character; he's just performing.
That's exactly what I'm taking about: he's a showman and a businessman. But for exactly that reason I can only take whaterver he does with a grain of salt. He's putting on an act and there's no secret about that, but I can never believe his songs and performance like I can believe Leadbelly's singing and know everything he sings about he is living. This performance by Tom is outright horrible clowning though but he's down for that too.
There is nothing I have encountered from Tom, and I've been an avid fan for over 25 years, that wasn't deeper than a raspy voice. Yes, he's sometimes hard to understand: this style of singing is called "scat". Brought in by the Jazz culture. Download the lyrics--well worth it!
No sorry, it's not "scat". Scat is improvising vocal notes over accompaniment without lyrics. In other words, singing notes rather than words.Waits does scat occasionally, but the majority of his singing is in lyrics. Scat was first made popular by Louis Armstrong Ella Fitzgerald.
Thank God For YouTube for giving us the platform to present all of this incredible music. Talk about "Second Life". I love Tom's recordings, but having these videos next to the recordings is incredible to see what he's been able to do with the material.
Absolutely brilliant...It never ceases to amaze me that these RockPalast shows were filmed & shown in what was then "West Germany". I mean, how many of those krauts actually understood what the hell Tom was saying?
What idea of beeing German can you have when not beeing one - obviously. Art is only reserved to the superior, you think. You are more of what Germany is known for than any of us.
A fair amount of them I'd say. In Germany, you have to take English at school, even back then (the East Germans mostly had to learn Russian, poor sods...)
Having learned English in school or not, Tom was probably not very intelligible to them. He's hardly intelligible to native English speakers sometimes. I'm guessing most of his foreign fans either really like his sound or are familiar with translations of the lyrics.
Right. I am German and I guess most of the people didn't understand him although they were able to speak English. But it's not all about the words...don't you think were touched by his wonderful music?
His songs are the stories of people that often go unnoticed, but are more than likely the strangers that we encounter every day. Those are my first thoughts about this
It should be noted that this is two song - "Invitation To The Blues" and "Eggs and Sausage(in a Cadillac with Susan Michelson)". Just pointing that out. Great sutff. Thanks so much.
This band rehearsed, and worked hard at what they did. YOu ever wonder about what it takes to do all this...first, the inspiration to write this kind of material, then the talent to sing it and play the piano and guitar, then simply having the interest in having an audience watch you, then getting the best players around you to tour with, all because you wanted it to be so. I'll always be amazed at this early Waits material, and thanks, to Chelseacf for such high quality versions of this.
So beautiful...I could throw up!

I wasn't talking about the composition itself, I was only refering to his tecnique playing...
I didn't meant to say it's bad, just meant to say there are better ones, technically, with their instrument...
When it comes to composition, i think he is awesomelly good...The rythmic syncopation and dissonances he uses at times are simply genious...
