  • So beautiful...I could throw up!

  • Here in Atlanta there's some very good covers of Tom being played. And this song in particular in dark of a winter night... What can I say? Just the classic song writer.

  • This could be my favorite song from my favorite album

  • His best, most heartbreaking song, in my humble opinion.

  • Best song ever invented.

  • my god i love him so mch

  • Amazing! Thank you for uploading!

  • I want that hat....

  • yes an unbelieveable talent no one like him

  • i think tom waits can appeal to the broken down man more than anyone i've ever heard of. maybe second to elliott smith but tom waits pursued through it so that makes him a bigger man....but elliott smith knew some pain too

  • the greatest living American lyricist.

  • @Youssef51 Couldnt agree more.

  • anyway's the only way

  • a true poet...

  • A Genious!

  • He's not for everyone, its a bit like having your first Guinness..you grow to enjoy it.

Tom is a brilliant musician and writer and he too grows on you and enhances your love of fine music. Thanks for Posting.

  • watch a better version (translated in greek)

  • what a cool cat..!

  • Spectacular!

  • some of you get so easily wound up - they are only comments - is your love for waits that fragile?

  • I love how it unnoticeable slides into Eggs And Sausages. What a man. What an artist.

  • Tom... take me home...

  • Excellent!

  • my favorite song by my favorite artist

  • Best performance of Invitation to the Blues ever!!! Nice improv at the end! <3!!!

  • If you don't like Tom , good! Maybe I'll be able to get a ticket next time he comes to my area.

  • Is this schtick? Sounds like a bad satchmo impersonation?

  • @mrpicky510 stick to the jonas bros. bonehead.

  • he combines the rough and gentle side of each person .. simply amazing mr.tom waits you rule baby..

  • @ghasgfhag Very well spoken. I don't care what anyone thinks of Tom, to me he is wonderful in a can. The absolute best lyricist/performer and probably one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. He's Tom Waits!!!!!

  • aaah natuurlijk, ik vroeg me al af waarom dit nummer me zo bekend voor kwam! Draadstaal!

  • ah...:-)

  • this is a mix of invitation to the blues and Eggs And Sausage..

  • Everybody knows....

  • He's a genious with his lyrics!

  • Klopt Goldex13, Draadstaal deed me deze prachtsong weer herinneren!

  • Kopieer dit als je gewoon zin hebt om iets te kopiëren, of als je hier DOOR DRAADSTAAL KOMT!!!

  • He looks very German, Russian, and irish in this video. The hat also has a Fidel Castro or British orphan farmer boy vibe to it. I love Tom..

  • Tom is an international traveler with good German shoes, Irish woolen socks, a half pint of Russian vodka & a cuban cigar in his jacket pocket and a three day stubble; down to his last Chesterfield filterless and he pissed that he left his lighter in the bus station on a rainy Wednesday night> He ponders the galaxy; his galaxy by the way; we just live in his cosmic dust. Don't make him madder or it'll only cause more earthquakes.

  • hells yeahhhh muthaf***as!!!!!!!!!

  • draadstaal

  • Grandissimo!!!!!!

  • thats what i felt first listening to his songs, listen to more songs and he will grow on you .

  • u know its crazy cuz after i wrote that comment, i kept listening more and it grew on me..its unique

  • Welcome to a very exclusive club bud.

  • @VITHYM some music definitely has to grow on you.

  • @benjamminmt it did

  • Too bad for you.

  • I adore this number & tom waits. Thanks for putting this up :)

  • Love this track... thanks for uploading!

  • Love the blues sax of Frank Vicari. A very underrated player in my opinion.

  • @InBy9OutBy5 yeah Frank was a bad mofo on the horn.

  • absolutely amazing... there is also a greek cover of this song called "xalia" sung by foivos delivorias... it's great too but it sounds totally different :p

  • Please...RSVP...ASAP

  • its awesome i cant say something more for this song and Tom:D

  • Oh man! Eggs and Sausage, I looove this song so much!

  • tom waits didnt write this right?

  • Just Google/Wiki it.

  • Waits wrote it.

  • There is, yes, another song called "Invitation to the Blues" but it's an entirely different song.

And this video in particular is a medley of some of his songs, it just happens to start off with a part of "Invitation to the Blues."

  • Just The Boss, period. His performance of this and Tom Traubert's Blues are 2 of the greatest in the history of popular music, bar none. In any other world he would be considered one of the greatest artists that ever lived but those of us who love him don't care so what he hell..........

  • I completely agree. I only got into Waits 6 months ago and now I'm obsessed! He is amazing!

  • @ghasgfhag well said

  • One of Tom Waits best songs, this song touches my heart, every time I listen to it.

He paints life with his words, and makes it so melancholical, you just feel it deep into your soul.

  • Thanks for uploading this concert

  • damn good! :)

  • just great for let your depressions flip like a cork of red wine ;)

  • legend

  • Thanks for the correction on the definition of "scat" singing. I sit corrected! I was mostly thinking of his "Step Right Up" but technically, that's not scat either. But I can't compare dear Tom to Louis Armstrong or Ella Fitzgerald. They set the unset mark...

  • If he was a businessman...would he donate the money he earns, for instance, when he prosecutes sb for copyrights violation?...

I like Tom, and the way he sings.I know there were loads os musicians whose music is far better, technically speaking, but the music i like the most is his. not just because of the music but because of tom himself.

He ain't pretentious, he's just true to himself. He is what he is and there's nth that could change that.

  • Not sure about your comment, about some musicians work being technically better. Tom Waits uses some very interesting/complex chord sequences and often plays modally, his main strength really is in the quality of the song writing.

  • I wasn't talking about the composition itself, I was only refering to his tecnique playing...

I didn't meant to say it's bad, just meant to say there are better ones, technically, with their instrument...

When it comes to composition, i think he is awesomelly good...The rythmic syncopation and dissonances he uses at times are simply genious...

Brilliant man+brilliant ideas+brilliant comping musicians...it's the best thing there is... =P

  • I know what you mean. I love the man and the work he does(I got into him about a month ago and now I can't stop listening to him) but I let one of my friends hear step right up and he said the drummer must be bored cause he's just doing the same beat, same with the saxophonist.

  • What gives you the right to call him "a pretentious motherfucker"?...

Is that all jealous or is there a little bit of hard ear and few musical instruction mixed in?...

Think twice before you come pointing fingers at people who's vallue has been already more than proved.Specially sb like Tom,who has more years playing and singing than you have just living.

  • Tom has created a persona that has developed over the years and, in my opinion, fits the mood of his music perfectly. There is nothing pretentious about it. Yes, he's pretending in that I do not think he acts exactly like that when he's at home with his wife and kids, but he is not claiming that this is his true character; he's just performing.

  • fuck you for taking everything so seriously...honestly if you enjoy it great and if not go somewhere else

  • @warren4184 gosh u must be pretty smart to have figured that out all by yourself. give yourself a pat on the back.

  • There is nothing I have encountered from Tom, and I've been an avid fan for over 25 years, that wasn't deeper than a raspy voice. Yes, he's sometimes hard to understand: this style of singing is called "scat". Brought in by the Jazz culture. Download the lyrics--well worth it!

  • No sorry, it's not "scat". Scat is improvising vocal notes over accompaniment without lyrics. In other words, singing notes rather than words.Waits does scat occasionally, but the majority of his singing is in lyrics. Scat was first made popular by Louis Armstrong Ella Fitzgerald.

  • Thank God For YouTube for giving us the platform to present all of this incredible music. Talk about "Second Life". I love Tom's recordings, but having these videos next to the recordings is incredible to see what he's been able to do with the material.

  • Absolutely brilliant...It never ceases to amaze me that these RockPalast shows were filmed & shown in what was then "West Germany". I mean, how many of those krauts actually understood what the hell Tom was saying?

  • im always asking myself how did Waits got so popular in europe? not to mention japan...

im from israel and frankly 90% of my usege on the web is searching and trying to understand meanings and backrounds of Wait's texts and slang..

im so hooked that is almost sad.. some nights my heart pounds just like thunder

    i don't know why it don't explode

  • What idea of beeing German can you have when not beeing one - obviously. Art is only reserved to the superior, you think. You are more of what Germany is known for than any of us.

  • A fair amount of them I'd say. In Germany, you have to take English at school, even back then (the East Germans mostly had to learn Russian, poor sods...)

  • Having learned English in school or not, Tom was probably not very intelligible to them. He's hardly intelligible to native English speakers sometimes. I'm guessing most of his foreign fans either really like his sound or are familiar with translations of the lyrics.

  • Or have access to the CD inlays. But I certainly see your point as far as live performances go.

  • The war is over, man. They are Germans, not "Krauts".

  • Right. I am German and I guess most of the people didn't understand him although they were able to speak English. But it's not all about the words...don't you think were touched by his wonderful music?

  • *they

  • thanks, mate!

  • This songs sents shivers up my spine, each time I hear it....makes me sad too

  • .....goosebumps.....

  • His songs are the stories of people that often go unnoticed, but are more than likely the strangers that we encounter every day. Those are my first thoughts about this

  • Music's Bukowski

  • GENIUS!

  • timeless<3

  • simply soul-shaking!

  • we don't use that term this days

  • we don't like megaplayahs these days

  • This IS a high quality video and the talent deserves it as much as the fans' psyches deserve

his lyrics. Club noise does nothing for me. The

sax playing on this one is all you could ask for, its so apt.

  • Small Change...Tom waits is one of few albums where I don't skip a song or two...

  • Tom amazes me every night, you can't get used to such talent. I never get bored of his music, it's timeless.

  • Tom Waits=Great song writer!

  • You know, to be able to wacth this from chile is just amazing, thanks a lot for the great material.

  • "Chile in a bowl..."???

  • That's hot.

  • Wow, thx alot brother...

  • It should be noted that this is two song - "Invitation To The Blues" and "Eggs and Sausage(in a Cadillac with Susan Michelson)". Just pointing that out. Great sutff. Thanks so much.

  • This band rehearsed, and worked hard at what they did. YOu ever wonder about what it takes to do all this...first, the inspiration to write this kind of material, then the talent to sing it and play the piano and guitar, then simply having the interest in having an audience watch you, then getting the best players around you to tour with, all because you wanted it to be so. I'll always be amazed at this early Waits material, and thanks, to Chelseacf for such high quality versions of this.
