  • Isn't this a pre-DDR song being played?

  • i heard that back in the old days that they had stores where tourists in east germany could go and buy east german made goods. but the catch was that you had to use west german deutsch marks, and could not be an east german citizen. Tote zu alle die Kommunisten!

  • People are going to complain no matter how bad or good they have it. People just love to bitch.

  • How about a computer, Ipod, or a plasma TV?

  • @marilynr46 hey how about a flying car and a pizza enlarger? no? omg us is such a dictatorship

  • even if the soviet union oppresed people (dont know all the facts) but they looked good doing it with all those crisp uniforms

  • best been the east german cola, cigarretes and cars - LOL

  • Some of you act like you have been in the ddr but i know you havent, You should ask a german who lived there not here the stereotypes you always here about "communist" countries , i dont know if gdr was good or bad but i have heard both from east germans

  • look at these traitors utilizing products of the DDR, what happy little westerners they really are

  • East Germany was a worker's paradise; that's why hundreds of people broke through the Berlin Wall, right?

  • We want all Communist states BACK! Life was better with Communism in every nation except those with corrupt Dictators like Stalin. But fuck them, life was still better then today

  • @SMGJohn

Over 75% would disagree with you. And the communist system was a complete utter failure, 90% on average voted against the USSR style system when elections were finally heild.

  • @Precise2011 Over 9000% would vote your comment as historical disaccurate and a shame to humanity trust

  • @SMGJohn

No what I is a simple fact, in every Proper European former European USSR satellite state with puppet controlled governments such as Poland, Romania, Hungary etc the USSR successor parties had a 90% swing against them. That's a fact you can't change. System was a failure, I ll always get the last say when it comes to people trying to distort a historical fact.

  • @Precise2011 I want proof, or else your a turtle

  • @SMGJohn

Problems not with the proof its under government sites of the respective governments and in government records published all over the internet. The problem is you have no proof to dispute this.

  • @Precise2011 Your a turtle

  • @SMGJohn

I expect an uneducated troll such as yourself to say nothing less. Don't worry though I know someone like you will never accept the truth or reality even when the proof is only 1 click away. Its indoctrinated into your mindset and thought. No one can help you with this, you already know what I m saying is the truth, you just can't admit it.

  • @Precise2011 I have the proof, but it's all in Russian so you wont be able to read it. Sad for you but I said you where a turtle if you didn't give me proof and you haven't so your now a DOUBLE TURTLE!

  • @SMGJohn

First off it shouldn't be in Russian, its impossible for the Russian government to know the results of an election if they are not recording it. The free elections resulted in all the former puppet governments in Hungary, Romania, Poland etc and any successor parties to receive less then 10% of the national vote. That's a fact, you can't change, Now your saying you have proof and your proof is using the wrong country. You have been caught out. Your a troll.

  • @Precise2011 Right....

  • @SMGJohn

The troll has been caught out and defeated. All is well.

  • @Precise2011 Picture or it didn't happen

  • @Precise2011 what are you talking about? In Germany, the Linke coalition is 4th or 5th largest party in parliament. In the Czech Republic, the Communists are the 4th largest parliamentary party and 2nd largest party membership wise.

  • was there stasi torturing people in the back too?

  • Als wenn wir in der DDR nichts zu essen gehabt hätten. Jedenfalls besser wie der HEUTIGE CHEMIEFRASS!!!

  • How very typical that The Guardian uploaded this.

  • LOOOOOOL!!!!!!!!!!

  • BRING BACK THE WALL!!!....TWICE THE HEIGHT!!!

  • @dpapaioannow youre crazy.

  • @gutiole thank you

  • @dpapaioannow i mean no disrispect, but you cant force people to stay there if they dont want to...

  • @gutiole they can very happily leave then...and leave east germany to our east german comrades ;)

  • @gutiole noone told them to stay

  • @dpapaioannow what?? tell me what happened if you wanted to leave? I guess you have to go over the wall...

  • Comment removed

  • LONG LIVE SOCIALISM!

  • @cadorrune

90% of Germans who previously lived in East Germany stated in the census living standards in East Germany were far worse. Plus my grandfather lived in East Germany and he even told me the best day in his life was when the wall came down. He even admits Germany now is much better.

The facts also support it, food shortages a 10 year life expectancy gap, crap quality of life etc.

  • Why did USA claim right over West Germany? they had nothing to do with fighting Germany except one! grrr it belong to Britain and France..

I like East Germany since after all I am a Communist..

  • @smeatonlad France would belong to the Germans if the Americans and Brits not invaded and freed the lousy-fighting French.

  • @smeatonlad Consider it Britain and France's "Thank you for single-handedly fighting Japan, have a chunk of germany."

  • @smeatonlad or how about Britain's "Thank you for the millions of tons of weapons, ammunition, food, fuel, and other supplies." even before the U.S. entered the war, it was helping the Allies by shipping convoy after convoy of supplies. and before World War Two the U.S. was the largest exporter of oil in the world. most of the fuel used by the RAF in the Battle of Britain came from American oil wells. it would have been hard to defeat the Luftwaffe with empty fuel tanks, eh?

  • Are there products like the ones that were talked about still available?

  • This proves that brainwashing works :D

  • I know, they love homo sexual

  • Life in the former GDR was not all Gray like in B movies but it was the more nasty of the Warsaw Pact countries. I think the reason behind so called OSTALGIE is the sense of alienation many older East Germans have, they do not feel part of the whole Germany. And as with any nostalgia it is easy to remember the wondeful parts and omit the bad. Case in point the Miami Cubans who came from 1959-1973 and were upper class Pre-Castro.

  • The people in the video are being nostalgic for everyday things the way people are in many countries. And it's not like every element of life under communism was nonstop hell. I've heard one middle aged Russian after another wax nostalgic for childhood summers in family dachas, and a Potsdam resident miss the quieter DDR life. In the West we only focused on the (hard to miss) negatives, but people were having good times too. Life is a mix of good and bad, no matter where you are.

  • @Tracymmo That is very true. We use to paint the USSR as shit all the time in the west, but this isn't true. I really don't have any problem with communism, I have a problem with is that they shoved it down people's throats whether they wanted it or not.

  • idk why thay count have just left it 2 diferent countries

  • East Germany didn't suppress national pride in the name of neutered war guilt the way the West Germans did. That is a big reason why a lot of Germans are nostalgic for the DDR: it was ok to be proud to be German in the DDR.

  • @PhatFarm60 they had so much pride that they had to build a wall to keep it all in, huh...

  • @anryth I never said East Germany was a great place to live; it was pretty fucked up. But at least they didn't create a culture of shame.

  • I think these people are nostalgic because these things bring back a feeling of heimat/homeland. They also have good memories of their past. After all happiness does not only arise from materialism and freedom.

  • WTF!!!!!!! THE "GOOD OLD DAYS" OF A LIVING HELL MORE LIKE IT. If it was so "good" than why were people literally dying to get out of east germany?

  • Notice most of the people here are older or elderly. Older people tend to reflect fondly on their youth despite how hard it may have been at the time. That being said, the pickles and sausage looked pretty good... but fish cream?

  • I don't see why they're so nostalgic. Germany is as communist as ever! West Germany unified with East when they all agreed Communism was the way to go.

It's a communist nightmare living in Germany, where the state gets in your business, the Jugendamt steals your children, homeschooling is illegal, parental rights are violated, and big brother looks over your shoulder at all times.

Isn't it fitting that Angela Merkel was East German?

  • @Asalieri homeschoolin should be illegal

  • @FreeeeS You are insane.

  • @FreeeeS You are insane.

  • The people look as ugly as communism.

  • @dmcfs3

don't worry you will look like them after 30-40 years. even in capitalism. )

  • I think the planned economy was a good thing. The profit motive leads society towards greed rather than human need.

There is nothing wrong with socialism/communism as long as the power stays with the ordinary person.

  • @tellyontellyon

"There is nothing wrong with socialism/communism as long as the power stays with the ordinary person"? Socialism is world where the power stays with the ordinary persons and anything other than that isn't socialism.

  • @unorthodoxtrotsky

yes, but the power in Eastern Germany and the USSR for that matter was concentrated in the hands of the bureaucracy... it was a distortion from what Marx intended.

  • @tellyontellyon

Yes that's why former Soviet blocs(not only Eastern Germany and USSR but entire Eastern European blocs as well as China, North Korea and Cuba along with Nasser's Egypt) shouldn't even be considered as "socialism". I agree with you but your statement was somewhat misleading because you said "There is nothing wrong with socialism/communism as long as power stays with the ordinary person." Because it sounds like you are still recognizing Eastern Germany and USSR as "socialist".

  • @tellyontellyon

Except that ordinary people didn't had power. Which I think is oxymoron because when ordinary people don't have state power, then it can't never be considered as "socialism". And yes "it was a distortion from what Marx intended". For that matter even Lenin because Eastern Germany was established by Stalinist agent.

  • @unorthodoxtrotsky

You must be aware of what Trotsky had to say on the matter with a name like that?

I'm a Trotskyist by the way.

  • @tellyontellyon

I am a Trotskyist myself. There were/are two factions of Trotskyist movement. One is called "Fourth International"(also known as "orthodox Trotskyists") and other is called "International Socialism"(which I am part of). As much as Trotsky's role was more justifying than Stalin(due to his alliance with workers), Trotsky was wrong in other issues as well.

  • @unorthodoxtrotsky

I am a member of the Committee for a Workers International (CWI)

There are many more than 2 groups you named these days.

Have you read 'the revolution betrayed" by Trotsky? It is very good.

  • @tellyontellyon

Oh I am sure of that. But originally in international level, those were two main factions. I think there have been various separation among orthodox Trotskyists. Some only recognize Cuba as socialist, some will even go far as embracing North Korea as socialist society. I think their obsession for state apparatus lead them to relate more with Stalinism than Marxism. I actually read "Revolution Betrayed". It is good but it also shows Trotsky's limitation.

  • @tellyontellyon

But I admit that I need to read it again. I heard his "History of Russian Revolution" is excellent. I haven't read it yet.

  • @unorthodoxtrotsky

Peter Taaffe, the general secretary of the Socialist Party (CWI) has some videos on here about Trotsky:

    look up:

Socialist Party reply #1 to Robert Service on Trotsky

....I think there are 5 or 6 in that series of videos.

Had a look at your home page... You like Mary Hopkins? Those were the days!

    She lives quite near here.

    Are you Korean?

I did voluntary work in Seoul, and helped put up lanterns in Tapgol Park.

  • @tellyontellyon

LOL!!!! Yes, "Those Were The Days" is only song I know from Mary Hopkins. I actually saw that videos on Robert Service's biography on Trotsky. I didn't bother to view it though. Not yet. I am originally from South Korea. I have been living in the States for more than 20 years though. :) Did you thought that my ID "UnorthodoxTrotsky" meant "anti-Trotsky"? lol

  • @unorthodoxtrotsky

I didn't think you were anti-trotsky, but I don't think Trotsky justified Stalinism.

The CWI is called Socialist Alternative in the States... have you come across them? They have quite a good website.

I'm not Korean, I'm Welsh. But I spent a couple of weeks in Korea and stayed in a Buddhist temple for a bit.

  • @tellyontellyon

I thought when you replied with statement "You must be aware of what Trotsky have to say on the matter with name like that", I thought maybe you assumed that there was some anti-Trotskyist element in my ID. lol "Socialist Alternative" in the States? I think I know them. I am a member of International Socialist Organization. I was born in South Korea but lived in the States for more than 20 years.

  • @tellyontellyon

One was he recognized Russia after Civil War as "workers' state"(which Lenin disagreed). Two, despite his criticism of Stalin, he still recognized Stalinist Russia as "degenerated workers' state". Which is self-contradiction because how can it be "workers' state" when such workers' state have been "degenerated". And last, his prediction about the fall of Stalinism after World War II was also wrong which related with his error about Russian society under Stalin.

  • Obviously higher quality food was much more accessible to them, even in the East. More family operated food businesses than todays mass produced factory goods. Although I would think the food in the East would have have been factory produced instead. Since it's all Communist and all. Damn brainwashed commies. Programmed to feel superior to the West.

  • Comunnist systems made people more sense to community because they all need the eacho other help to scape from system.

  • But wasn't the West Germany the good one? I mean communism couldn't offer this quality because it doesn't work.

  • Marinated or pickled cucumbers are very, very popular in Russia also. We also like bloated meat and fish, fish cream and caviar...

  • that is cause everything is from china now.

  • good old days my ass . communist fucks terrorized , murdered , tortured , millions of people . people who have never lived in commie countries they praise it becasue they read books and it to them it sounds like a good idea. but when you experienced you know that is horrible , people were scared to talk because they were afraid spies would listen and they would go in jail

  • Of course not everything was bad in east germany, but most things were very bad. Some stupid left-winged germans want those "good old days" back. I guess they suffer from some kind of mental disease or a huge gap in their memories.

    Regards from germany!

  • "the good old days of East Germany" ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!?!??!?!? The commie scum massacred over 120 million people worldwide in the last 90 years and the commie swine is being praised and honoured for committing this genocide? the fucking commie swine of east Germany and every other former commie country is burning in hell as we speak. good night left side. wipe out every fucking filthy commie scum!

  • @UFCMania98 fuck it. SOCIALISM is future. fuck capitalism.

  • @Garo13 hahaha who said I'm a capitalist? both capitalism and communism are 2 sides of the same coin run and owned by the fucking jew. I'm a proud National Socialist, and don't try using the holohoax bullshit lie against me, because it won't work. and yes socialism is the future....but not before we blow the brains out of every fucking worthless commie scum

  • @Garo13 do me a favour while you're in hell....make sure you don't piss off stalin too much, cuz if you do he might shove a hammer and sickle up your ass and make you say "OH UNCLE!" haha you fucking commie pinko faggot, burn in hell

  • @UFCMania98 ha ha someone is upset. Poor Capitalist :(

your weak. you need your money.

  • @Garo13 haha yes, because clearly I'm a capitalist....just because I fucking hate communism (a jew creation), I MUST be a capitalist (a jew run economic system as well). no you bleeding, retarded imbecile, I'm not a capitalist. I'm a National Socialist, and Hitler freed Germany from the jew's vice-grip on Germany and Europe like no capitalist or communist leader has ever even remotely done. shut the fuck up you worthless jizz guzzling commie asshole

  • @UFCMania98 oh, ok. thats cool. i hate Jews too. i just belive in state control, and no private corparations, but small bussinesses are ok.

and ofcourse everypeople should live in thier own country. i am not communist.

  • @Garo13 it's good you hate kikes, but you can't NOT be a commie and believe in state control lmao. I think that National Socialism is the only way out of the mess that Europe and north america are in

  • @UFCMania98 the idea of SOCIALISM is any way shape or form is more Powerful government.

There needs to be no big corparations and the Government must control Economy.

becouse if it dose then the value of the currency can easily be controled becouse ther is no competition among big coparations that will hurt a stock market.

  • @UFCMania98 oh but totaly man, We need extreme nationalism back in Europe. kick the Muslims and Jews out. return to our REAL cultural roots, even readopt some pagan traditions.

  • @UFCMania98

national-socialism is dead and burried forever.

  • @UFCMania98 What exactly is this "mess" that Europe and North American is supposedly in?

  • you re a moron.I could answer..but you are just an totally idiot douchebag who doesn't deserve atention from nobody.

  • @gonzo2399 lmfao you fuckwad. I'm a moron because I said the truth about the commie scum comitting a true holocaust of 120 million people? communism is dying, more and more people hate commie scum with every day that passes. if you're a commie scum, I would be scared as to what happens 15 years from now when every fucking commie swine will be shot. you're the fucking jizz your mom should've swallowed...but she was too drunk to swallow that night. you're more retarded than a rock

  • @UFCMania98 love ya, too.

  • nah, this is leftist propaganda, I bet that all of you who say that East Germany was a better place, you would be the first moaning and bitching about how much you want to defect to the West and how bad this is to be taken into STASI prisons.

  • 'The quality of products was much better than what's on offer today' - this can be true in some cases, east or west notwithstanding

  • I remember my uncle had to put his name on a list for a new car which he would get in approx. 7 years. First he had a Trebant in 1968 then his Skoda had to last another 7 years before he could get a new one. No such thing as a supermarket either. My grandparents couldn't leave the country to visit the United States till they were retired before unification. The benefits after reunification far surpass anything in the past.

  • The responses here are delusional. What we are doing here in YouTube: Freely expressing our opionon on all topics, as we please. That was strictly 'Verboten.' It was a 'crime' to hear West radio or view Western TV if you were priveliged to have a TV and the rabbit ears picked up signal. Don't believe this crap; it was bad there. No opportunities. Your life, schooling, career...all determined by someone else. Not you or your desires. Everyone faked party loyalty to not be totally left out.

  • @OrangeKarl7 Yes, because the West was propagating its false picture of the so-called capitalist "prosperity" and "freedom". At least in the DDR, people had access to free education, healthcare, subsidized housing, generous pension. This is so unlike the capitalist West, where it is not too hard find homeless people, drug addicts, criminals, parasitic plutocracy, student graduating with over 100K dollars in debt. DDR was no paradise yet better than than most of the capitalist nations.

  • @resist4resist Resist, here I am in the US, which is supposed to be a "dream" country, the cornerstone of capitalism. But everybody worries every day whether or not they'll have a job tomorrow, or whether they or their relatives will get sick, and not have the money to pay for treatment, or worries whether or not they'll have a place to live in six months. It's a terrible life.

How I wish I could have lived in the DDR, a place where you didn't have to worry about being able to exist.

  • Oh, please, this is false information, what is called now "Ostalgie," a play on the word nostalgia. Please! Anyone who spent any time in the DDR rarely saw products in abundance in shops. This modern TV video dresses it up way too much. Have all forgotten the lines to buy just simple staple items? The regular shortages? These colorful wooden Christmas ornaments shown at the end from the Erzgebrirge WERE NOT available for most East Germans to purchase; they were to earn West monies only.

  • I wonder how often they could actually eat in the good old days...

  • Hilarious: Guardianistas extolling a totalitarian state yet they're the ones obsessed with 'fascist' George Bush. What a load of hypocrites.

  • If the DDR had such better quality why were only 53% of T.V.'s in 1987 color and why did only 9% of people have phones?

  • The quality of products worldwide (not just in former DDR) is now pure SCHEISSE, thanks to the mindset of all corporate executives, who know that spending BILLIONS to engineer and manufacture products that will break soon after their warranty is up still results in maximum profits. It doesn't matter what political system your nation was practicing 40 years ago, we're all living under global corporate feudalism now.

  • Capitalism is a magnificent fraud that robs from the future to fool the body-politic today. Capitalism inevitably degenerates into fascism, which paves the way to neo-feudalism. Capitalism openly admits that its moral compass features Fear and Greed as its only cardinal points.

To deflect public anger, fascism all too frequently masquerades as socialism. Eugene V Debs was a classic socialist and he would never support those things attributed to socialism today.

  • Well-well, it looks like us Russians aren't the only ones missing communism & USSR :-D

  • @azubarev2 i dont know mate but communism CAN be very bad. I mean, in China its obviously working, (their economy is expanding 10% annually !!!) so if you have communism and MARKET economy , then maybe.... but then again, theres nothing better than Western living standards ---- we've got diverse multicultural societies with immigrants and asylum seekers, we can travel to ANY country in the world and our income is generally higher than in former USSR. Why do you think there are Russians in Europe

  • @BenTennison16 China isn't even remotely communist anymore. Beijing only retains the superficial appearance of a Maoist tyranny but, the U.S. helped China to develop a parallel command and control oligarchy that exists to serve the global corporations and banks.

China is mega-fascist, not communist and certainly not socialist. Hillary Clinton said that China is the future and she wants the U.S. to be just like them.

  • @InfiniteMushroom lol china isn't even remotely communist? are you fucking kidding me? you're not allowed to criticize the tyranny and crimes of the communist regime at all....if you do, you're sent to jail or just killed. you're not allowed to own a house. the internet and t.v are censored beyond belief, in most major squares they have pictures of mao that they worship. the only thing capitalist about china today is its economy, its gov't is NOT democratic

  • When I think about it, it looks like "choice" isn't as great as economics class tries to make it seem. I think I'd rather only have the choice of two or three decent brands to compare at my local grocery store, than have to go through twenty sub-par brands to find one good one.

  • WEll we all have to forget all the BS we've heard about East Germany as though it was some horrible, bad thing or something, and the great propaganda-fest that was the fall of the berlin wall. I frankly don't even believe there were that many people who wanted it to fall on the East side; not as many as the US media would have you believe, anyway. The living standard in the former soviet countries dropped dramatically after it's fall.

  • Germany 4 Life

  • Oh c'mon guys, WAKE UP TO YOURSELVES. How could you say anything to defend communism? I'm not saying capitalism is perfect. But it's a darn sight better than communism. How can you praise a system in which they placed barbed wire around their borders and even a giant cement wall around a city; where they shot dead anyone who tried to escape to the other side? I have friends who live in the former East Berlin. They regard East Germany as nothing but a catastrophe. And rightly so.

  • I used to be ignorant towards the Soviet Union and East Germany, but the more I read about it the more I am convinced that what we are teached at school are over-exaggarations. It doesn't seem like the hellhole they make it sound like.

And this video is even more proof that people actually miss the older times. I remember reading a report that people in Soviet Russia missed the older times as well because housing and economy was better.

  • @fetteranton "we are teached at school'? which school did you attend?

  • I live how people frame the debate. Communism vs Democracy LOL One is an economic forum and the other a forum of governing. It could be Communism vs Capitalism or Democracy vs a Dictatorship. This is a phenomenon found largely in the US. Prof of a successful propaganda campaign

  • I live how people frame the debate. Communism vs Democracy LOL One is an economic forum and the other a forum of governing. It could be Communism vs Capitalism or Democracy vs a Dictatorship. This is a phenomenon found largely in the US. Prof of a successful propaganda campain

  • IMO this needs to be put in perspective. Imagine if the US government falls tomorrow. And no more Hellman's mayonnaise is made. Personally, I'm 22. So I've just eaten Hellman's for 22 years. The new mayonnaise tastes better, but imagine 21 years later I can buy Hellman's again after 21 years? I'm gonna be pretty excited.

  • I married an east german girl, she makes the best sausages and give the best head in the world, when she starts, her head becomes a blur she is so fast from start to finish and makes good cream cakes too

  • @knutheifer -

I guess she would have to make sausage if she is married to a dickless wonder like you.

  • I take it you are jealous? thank god, I like jealous people, do you get the same treatment? tonight she made ice cream with rum, covered me in it and jumped on me, again, she was just a blur, great stuff ehhe

  • @knutheifer -

You're an ass. But you made me laugh.

  • ehhehe Im sorry, I just take things in life light hearted, Im glad you laughed;-))), I know I am an ass, my wife tells me that every 5 minutes lol but everytime she tells me, I then stand outside the house with a hand held airhorn and spin round and round so the neighbours will know she is going through pmt again, I pre warned them of this, now I am finding the dog coming out with me and spining round too, anyway she is a good girl in reality, a bit crazy though! anyway, have a beer on me mmm

  • lol, good deal

  • @knutfheifer great B S!

  • 1:23 A report on East German products and bavarian music - yes, that must be the work of British journalists!

  • @eltfell

Haha! Yes I noticed that. To be fair it could have been Americans, or basically anyone not from mainland Europe, either!

  • I was recently in the old DDR (Saxony) visiting friends there. As my friend's father, a former NVA soldier, remarked: "Everyone had a job. Rents were cheap. The roads and cars weren't so good. When supplies were low, people had to be communal, and this idea still exists in a lot of the old DDR. A strong sense of community."

Then he pointed out the window to a building in the distance. "And that's where the Stasi listened in on us."

Some things people miss. Other things, they don't.

  • @mdhookey "Some things people miss. Other things, they don't."

Isn't that basically true for every society? I for example would love to see the global drug prohibition being dismantled because it [the war on drugs] claimed about a million civillian casualties (cynically called collateral damage). But to come back to the topic. I think that life in the GDR was far better than life in Thailand during the era of military dictatorships.

  • Weiß jemand die Namen die Lieder?

    Viele Grüsse aus Rheinland-Pfalz

  • Wow! Lets see life in GDR (Eaast germany).. Lets start with..shoot their own citizens for wanting to travel, ha or EACAPE... An putting a fucking wall around not to keep us evil western capitalist pigs out., but to keep the terrorized citizens in.. Oh I know it was for their own good...

  • "dirty Anglo-Saxon"

    "brave Germanic people"

    Haha, what?

  • is good to see braves Germanic people who are not empoisoned by dirty americans subhumans "cultures" and state capitalism !

  • Statist communism was a dysfunctional system, but it's entirely possible it might have done at least *some* things right...especially a communist system run by Germans!

  • This video is fucking retarded. East Germany fell through a weak, uesless, inept, and almost non-existent economy.

I think this video fails to mention that over 70% of the items used by east Germany on a daily basis were either made in or smuggled from the west.

    Goddamn revisionist shitholes.

  • @GecSword

this is just people remembering the PRODUCTS they had, you have no idea nor do i what life was really like behind the wall, it doesn't matter that 70% of products were smuggled into the east, that's not the point on the video, they're just REMEMBERING little cultural things they had in the East, and you sir, have no right to judge that.

  • Germans... jeez. They will never ever get it. Yeah... when someone honds a gun to your throat and asks you if your papers are in order and you shit your pants, they are easily washed later in the comfort of your studio apartment where you can rest before your 10 hr shift at the factory. Nice.

  • it's interesting to see history, but why the fuck do we have to see an expedia commercial before we see the feature? The disgusting, annoying commercial was actually longer than the feature. I am sick of commercials. When they invade my space, I always avoid the product being advertised.

  • Do these markets commonly take place or was this a one-time deal?

  • The east germans i know they are more communal they have a sense of those around them while those of the capitalistic system are living in their bubbles of greed . There was more of a Communo-Centric vibe from the east germans

  • lol moron.

  • The west germans had a sense of, what do you call it now? FREEDOM.

But of course who needs freedom when you've got community spirit all living in the shit of the gulags eh!?

  • @scrembo Gulags were Russian and besides that They were closed with Premier Kruschev coming to power

  • @MinisterKGB Is that why so many people risked so much to escape East Germany?

  • @battleax86 It is true many left but I am talking about the people of the DDR, not the government and how it treated them

  • @MinisterKGB I was talking about the people as well...you say they are more communist, but so many sacrificed everything to make it to the capitalist West...

  • Mmmmm.....Fish cream.

  • ah...yes the good old days of Authoritarian tyranny.

the guardian is a pathetic leftwing rag.

  • Nostalgic gits, I'm a west german and these people are just sour their way of life was unsustainable.

  • I have also talked to older Russians and Yugoslavians and over 50% miss the "good old days". Are people really better off now? We can buy iPods and other stuff, and you can say we have freedom now to criticize the regime but that doesn't work anyways -- I've been to protests and they don't seem to accomplish anything. It doesn't make any difference whether it's communism or capitalism but at least with communism you have a solidarity and brotherhood you cannot find in Western countries.

  • oh yeah... this brotherhood of the so called "Blockwart" supervising whether the neighbourhood already got to the faked elections. And the nice Stasimember that prevents you from getting your PhD Degree at university because you work for the church. A very comforting brotherhood Please don't desire a system you've never lived in. In a country, in which the first thing you remember is your parents telling you, that things said at home are not meant to be known in pubic, nothing is better.

  • It's no different here. A University professor spoke out against all the immigrants coming to Canada from Asia, refering to it as an "Asian Invasion" and lost her job because of it. In Germany, the country that is now supposed to have free speech since it's no longer Communist, Ernst Zundel, a holocaust denier is in German prison right now for exercising his right to free speech. Sure people might be offended by what he's saying but to arrest him AND convict him? How is this freedom?

  • Not different? Racism and holocaust denial compared to working for the church administration? Think about it! Hypothesis: It is part of your religion to kill people and burn down houses. Your god wants you to. Do you think confining you for your crimes would be against the freedom of worship!? Slander and sedition is not protected by the freedom of speech.

  • Well you can also get in a lot of trouble for saying 9/11 was an inside job, I've heard of people being arrested for publicly saying that. It's like when the Nazis burned down the Reichstag and blamed it on the Communists so they would have an excuse to declare marshall law and restrict individual freedoms. Now the USA blew up the World Trade Center and blamed it on terrorists and they have used that as an excuse to introduce many new laws that restrict individual freedoms. See the similarity?

  • And as for the church administration...considering what genocide, homophobia, and war that has been waged in the name of religion, it's amazing we don't look upon Christianity the same way we do Nazi Germany. The only reason the church doesn't do stuff like that anymore is because they've lost all the power they enjoyed in the Middle Ages. If the church still had a lot of power they would be arresting people for denying that God exists.

  • Watch out! You are accusing my mother to spread homophobia and genocide because she is working for the church administration. Furthermore you justify the fact, that she hadn't got the possibility to get her PhD just because she is working for a religious institution. And it is not only that. But you are condemning ALL religious people (including me) to be criminals and showing disgust to them although you dont know them. Generalisation ftw! Its so wonderfully easy.

  • Yes. right. The government then instructes the officials to deny you the possibility to study. And in addition to that you don't have a way to complain about it and get compensation for your confinement. *lol*

  • @oratorman No one has been arrested for saying 9/11 was an inside job. You're full of crap.

  • @battleax86 They won't say you are under arrest for saying 9/11 was an inside job, because there is no law against that. They will charge you with something else, being a public nuisance, protesting in a "no-protest" zone, etc...but you can see when Alex Jones and his 9/11 truthers were out on the streets of New York in 2007 saying 9/11 was an inside job, many were thrown into paddywagons for "protesting without a permit".

  • @oratorman Then they were arrested for protesting without a permit. I agree that it's a stupid law and NYC should repeal it (or the court should overturn it), but it's still the law and they were arrested for breaking it. It was what they were DOING, not what they were saying...

  • @oratorman And the cites wernt covered in shitty advertising, they were clean.

  • @oratorman I agree. Our words are powerless, even though we might have freedom of speech in the capitalist system. However, in Stalinist countries, such as the DDR and USSR, both gays and the handicapped were discriminated against. Handicapped people disappeared, as they were sent to huge asylums away from their loving families and gay people were ostracized (or sometimes sent to Siberia). How can this happen in a fair society? Stalinism was not tolerant of minorities or difference at all.
