Actually yes. The USA doesn't have an allocation on that band. The UK and Ireland and more and more European countries do. The Japaneese manufacturers are yet to produce radios for it. Wouxun has beat them to it.
@jwkong Best advise. I have been licensed (novice/intermediate) since 2000 but only last year started taking some more interest in the hobby. I didn't want a very expensive or complicated handheld so I went with the wouxun.
I prefer yaesu radios personally they are better made, are easier to program, scan much more quickley on BOTH bands. But I think they are over priced for what you get (didn't stop me getting a VX-8G), especially the hand held radios.
If you want APRS, I'd reccomend the Kenwood TH-D72. Its way ahead of the Yaesu. The Wouxon uses similar accessories to the Kenwood eg Speakermike, power connector. You should be able to pick up a secondhand TH-D7 for teh proce of a Wouxun. It has APRS but you'll need an external GPS for beaconing on the move. Best of luck.
I'm torn between buying a vx-8dr (specifically like the APRS feature) or saving my money for the time being and buying a cheapy Wouxun. With your experiences from the Yaesu and the Wouxun, which one would you recommend over the other?
hahha..
