  • This is one of the most fitting covers and tributes to this song. Fantastic! I believe you :)

  • if i were ever to pick up a guitar, this would be the first song i would attempt to learn. simply magnificent!

  • Kasink you have to put out a CD of your work. I've seen many of your covers and you are among the finest players I've seen.

  • As BigRedBeast said, Duane is smiling & so am I. It is right there with the original from "The Road Goes On Forever" Sweet work. When I was in the service, we musicians would banter about whether that was really one or 2 guitars - and on the bridge harmonic "doorbell" tones, we would all grin & just shake our heads! Be proud, you've done well, kasink!!! cheers

  • The tone of your guitar is breathtaking.

  • you are an amazement .......

  • i didnt think it possible that someone out there can play this song better than the original. Love it man!

  • Sweet job man! Very nice!

  • Derek Trucks uses this song now in his intro to Midnight in Harlem...

  • 6 people have no clue what good music is.

  • Very nice. The first song I learned. Then got so excited that I learned it, I went to learn a bunch of other ones. Then forgot how to play this. I'm currently working on it again right now. Great job, my friend!

  • thank you for posting this you did an awesome job

  • Duane is smiling and so am I. Thanks.

  • Thanks man, that was awesome.

  • are you alternating your thumb in between d and d the whole time or do you sometimes mix a A in there? it dosnt seem to fit right when i try to play it if you know what i mean

  • HOW AMAZING ARE WE?

  • @99999janie Either you mean amazing that we like this music or amazing that we as humans are capable of making music like this, in which case I would have to agree in both aspects:)

  • Wow!

  • magnifique

  • Nice job!!!

  • Open D. Capo at the 2nd fret and it will be just like the original.

  • are you using a thumb pick? Is it necessary for making this song sound authentic?

  • what guitar is that?

  • Marthaaaa....i love you

  • What tuning is this in? open d?

  • @davehastheblues1 open E

  • @wethepeople469 actaully I think this recording is in open D. Although I learned it in open E

  • Nice job-forgot about this song. Use to play all the time at gigs. You have inspired me to play it again. Like Kottke says"My favorite song for the Acoustic guitar"

    Great job!

    Vince

  • ooh great i always wanted to know how to do this ! thanks

  • I've tried for awhile to put my own touch on this song. If I was better at playing what was in my head this would be it!

    Thanks, well done!

  • damn good job!! i learned this song now, but i play it in standard E tuning...for me its easier..only problen with that is tha harmonics at the end, i can't get that same ching..i jus do a llittle somethin different but that is way awesome!!! thumbs up!!

  • even though its the wrong key its very very good. and i like how he made it his own way.

  • Very nicely done starting to learn this song today!!!

  • could not ask for anything better

  • Brilliant!!!

  • @hochbob Is that a joke?... I'm pretty sure Duane is better.. hahaha

  • Your rendition of this, one of my favorite acoustic pieces, is simply superb! Thank you for this post!

  • Are you playing 12's? Sounds like some thick stuff!

  • I actually prefer this over the original!!! The brightness of these strings MAKE this a superior version!!!

  • didnt know ninjas could get so good at guitar

  • I find it amazing that the actual recording had 2 guitars in it, and yet you make it sound just as good with 1. Props.

  • Don't know if I already commented but great rendition. You give it a bit more of a staccoto feel in places--nice touch.

  • Duane and Leo have nothing on you. Your interpretation of this classic is extraordinary. Love the sound of your Guild, as well as mine......a D-44M I purchased new in 1974. It more than complements my Jose Ramirez classical and Eric Clapton "Blackie" Strat.

Thanks for sharing your enormous talent.

  • @hochbob Ummmm....no. Great cover though.

  • I think it is a good idea to play this with the thumpick as you have chosen to do with your arrangement. The two guitars were originally recorded fingerstyle in my opinion, one a Dobro and the other a regular flat-top Martin. Using the thumpick kind've adds the spikiness and brightness that you get from the Dobro...I think to play this tune on one guitar, the thumbpick helps alot-it also helps the natural harmonics jump out a little more. Nice work!

  • I play this song and you did and awesome job I would say anyone would and should be impressed. Great Job!

  • outstanding!!

  • *--*

one day i'll play like him

    ^^

  • That was excellent! Great cover!

  • goodonya very well done.

  • man you got it down....great song

  • What 4 idiots voted thumbs down? This is very very good.

  • Thanks for sharing this! Beautiful.

  • Beautiful. One of the all time greatest guitar tunes.

  • nice ! this song is a beauty

  • Bravo! Well performed and very inspiring.

  • this rendition is played open E? and Original is open G?????

  • @mebloke69 Nope, original is E too

  • Comment removed

  • @mebloke69 actually the original is open E

  • @flyingninja92 Actually, Duane Allman tuned to open D and fretted on the second fret. In essence giving it an open E voicing. I suppose you could play this tuned to open E, but the fingering would be painful. LOL

  • @70x719946 I actually find it significantly easier to play in actual open E...the tauter strings makes the fast bits easier. The only problem is, back when I used to tune it up there, I broke guitar strings. So I resort to the capo, which obviously, like you said is the same thing. If only guitar strings were more malleable....

  • Love this song - very nice job!

  • dwayne wrote this for his new born child

  • beautiful! One of the best instrumentals you'll ever hear, enjoy!

  • Sick

  • I don't understand people arguing about if this song should be played in open d with a capo or just open e. Does it really matter?

At the end of the day it's just personal preference. You can make this song sound great in either of the tunings.

  • @samnninty I think it does. The right tuning will give the right finger positions which in turn effect the string lengths when fretted. Which can alter the pitch. So it's important.

  • Great! What's the tuning you use?

  • the song is played in open E tuning

  • Gorgeous playing. Have seen several other YTs but they're all playedin the Leo Kottke style (which is fabulous, don't get me wrong)...nice to see a vid of a rendition more resembling the original. Bravo.

  • That is definitely the BEST rendition I have heard of this song. Executed so flawlessly. Excellent, Bravo.....5 stars out of 5.

  • By far the best rendition of this tune, save the one of Duane and Dickey ofcourse

  • Thats really good.

  • Beautifully done. best cover of this great tune ive heard. Just a tad rushed.

  • Beautifully done. Great song. Thanks for sharing.

  • You have no idea how beautiful that was to me... i wish I could play like you.

  • That was so properly executed, I wouldn't be surprised if Duane himself was in that ninja costume!

  • I'm pretty sure that's some open tuning, but which...?

  • @studiolezard

Open E (same as open d just up)

    or

Open D (same as open e just down)

  • That was awesome, I need to learn this awesome piece someday.

  • Its sort of like this, I'm trying to figure out how to play it, and he is saying here's the chords heres the pattern, just nail the bare chords... ERR!!! Very well done.

  • Sounds great man!!

  • you rushed it if you slowed down it'd be fantastic

  • I'm seething with jealousy.

  • Awesome rendition...one of the best I have seen. Thanks for sharing.

  • YOU'RE AMAZING!

  • great cover !!! was superb, that's my next song to lurn but it look a bit hard

i've got a tab of this one but not shure that the same you play

    anyway 5 stars

  • you are fantastic!

  • Absolutely immaculate!

  • Superb rendition. This was the ONLY song that Duane Alman ever wrote. It took three years for that genious to complete. This renditon is Duane's not Leo's in Open E tuning. Terrific!

  • wonderful.

  • its a washburn....lookin at the pick guard.....

  • EXCELLANT man, amazing, such a simple song to the ears, but dam try playing it. i'm a drummer in all rights, but i love the guitar.thnx man for that simple song, you make it sound just like duane did!!!!

  • Goo job. Nice to hear something a little different.

  • I saw a video once upon a time celebrating Duane's life with this song playing in the background and it's ever since been memorialized as "his" song in my head. Beautiful playing, beautiful song, beautiful memories.. thanks a lot!

  • opening frames thought U Muslim terrorist! lol

Great playing... eat a fkn Peach!

  • sweet

  • amazing playing, this my favouraite version by far thats on youtube : D

  • Whats your tuning?

  • tune in open "E"

  • Wow

  • one of the best renditions of this great classic ditty..keep up the great pickin'

what brand & model is that? it sounds like a Taylor, but I don't recognize it to any particular model...

i'm savin for an acoustic/with the blender system that Taylor has implemented so well.

  • very nice

im a big allman bros fan =]

  • I love this, hear it last about ten years ago,

love the open d (or E) tuning, which I play myself.

  • One of my favorite songs. Nice job.

  • You're right, sir.

  • can anyone explain the picking pattern? i really like it.

    thanks

  • Nice turtleneck! Are you Canadian?

  • As with your cover of Kottke's "Watermelon", this is a superb rendition of this song.

  • excellent picking!!! trying to get that pick pattern down myself! awesome!

  • Nice one man! Joebrassmonkey's right, it's normally open E... Regards Y' All...

  • incredible

  • Would you mind sharing the tuning you use? I play a similar version but use an alternate tuning and like yours. Thanks...

  • Open E is what it's normally played in. He may be using Open D, which is a whole step down from open E.

  • sweet.....

    nice turtle-neck too.

  • nice cover!

  • Very nice playing. Outfit gives a creepy vibe.

  • Nice, and obviously an accomplished guitar/banjo player. I would say however, to those who want to play Little Martha as it was played by Duane Allman and Dicky Betts, not to use this video as a template. It deviates substantially from the original, in fact, they are almost 2 entirely different interpretations.

  • Really ?

  • The right hand is doing a very different picking pattern than the original. Not saying it's bad, just saying it is different.

  • Yeah; he's gone to the bass/alternate picking style with his thumb and looks as if he rearranged things around that. It's a great rearrangement. Then again, Kottke's played some of his stuff so differently through the years, maybe this guy picked up on something Kottke once did.

  • This guy is a precise as I have ever seen!

  • well done brother, and shot so well that I'm going to use it as an instructional vid to learn this song...thanks much

  • see above comment

  • Amazing, I love th tune, and that was a fantastic versin, welldone, I wish I could play like you.

  • excellent dude, excellente!

  • Good job but damn what's up with the Robin Hood outfit?

  • He's a ninja, and you will not disrespect his attire. ;)

  • NINJA do not need your help your blowing his cover

  • Its not in the right key but your still really good

  • FUCKING SWEET!!!!

such a refreshing change from the goofs who strum three chords for hours and hours.

Would love you and your guitar by my camp fire any day!

  • agreed *cough* OASIS *cough*

i find moving your thumb independantly reeeaally hard

  • agreed. third only to Duane and Leo

  • best one i've seen...

    you da man!

  • I didn't know Bazooka Joe played guitar! No really, that's a nice version. Check mine out when you get a chance

  • Good time / steady tempo

    Nice touch!

  • tuning? a good tab? where can i find this info?...thank you

  • open d

  • i learned it in open e, i will have to try d because e doesnt sound as good.

  • beautiful, is that a martin your playing on? Nice strings as well

  • great interpretation, great technique. I love the alternating thumb/bass part emphasising 2 and 4, and also the embellishments to the melody, all of which makes it sound like you are covering both guitar parts at once! have you studied classical guitar? I thought I played this song well but now I have to study your version, many thanks, and post some more stuff!

  • sounds really good nice sound and amazing cover 5 stars im trying to learn it now hope i can get it to sound like this

  • PURFECT Great song great talent

  • Best version of this song I've seen on Utube - congratulations.

  • OUTSTANDING!

I couldn't help but notice that this guy is wearing his turtleneck halfway up his face??

You can see the tip of his nose poke out in the first few seconds!

I'd love to know why, but then again...I don't care! He's one of the best I've ever heard in alternate tune!

    Grats to you dude!

  • Beautiful song, beautiful guitar playing. 5*

    Gretsch'n

  • That song apparantly came to Duane Allman in a dream. He dreamt he was with Jimi Hendrix and Jimi played him that song. When he woke up, he tuned he guitar to open D (I know it's in open E) and learnt it.

  • Beautiful. Both your playing and that guitar sound amazing.

  • class

  • I figured out most of this song in regular tuning. O' boy, what a waste of time.

  • The sound of new string with Mahogany body guitar"

  • Great job on this beautiful tune.

  • Many fine renditions of this tune out here, but IMHOP, this is the best one hands down. I was goping to post one of my own, but after watching yours I think I will take my guitars out back and make a bonfire with them instead! (Since it is now obvious that I don't know how to use them properly - lol) What kind of guitar are you using? It looks by the pick guard to be a Guild of some sort. Great job on this wonderful Duane ALlman tune!

  • maybe ... somewhere out there in the great beyond ...

... bother duane allman's spirit can hear/view all these cool cats paying homage to his little martha song...

i dunno anymore if that's the way it works eternity-wise but it sure would be nice...

peace2all the utoobsters who've uploaded versions of little martha, the most peaceful song ever written.

it's real nice to listen to all of them. thanks.

  • It's originally played in open E, but can be played with open D with a capo on the second fret, this person did it in open D, but didn't use a capo. I like it both ways, it's still pretty nice
