As BigRedBeast said, Duane is smiling & so am I. It is right there with the original from "The Road Goes On Forever" Sweet work. When I was in the service, we musicians would banter about whether that was really one or 2 guitars - and on the bridge harmonic "doorbell" tones, we would all grin & just shake our heads! Be proud, you've done well, kasink!!! cheers
Very nice. The first song I learned. Then got so excited that I learned it, I went to learn a bunch of other ones. Then forgot how to play this. I'm currently working on it again right now. Great job, my friend!
are you alternating your thumb in between d and d the whole time or do you sometimes mix a A in there? it dosnt seem to fit right when i try to play it if you know what i mean
@99999janie Either you mean amazing that we like this music or amazing that we as humans are capable of making music like this, in which case I would have to agree in both aspects:)
Nice job-forgot about this song. Use to play all the time at gigs. You have inspired me to play it again. Like Kottke says"My favorite song for the Acoustic guitar"
damn good job!! i learned this song now, but i play it in standard E tuning...for me its easier..only problen with that is tha harmonics at the end, i can't get that same ching..i jus do a llittle somethin different but that is way awesome!!! thumbs up!!
Duane and Leo have nothing on you. Your interpretation of this classic is extraordinary. Love the sound of your Guild, as well as mine......a D-44M I purchased new in 1974. It more than complements my Jose Ramirez classical and Eric Clapton "Blackie" Strat.
I think it is a good idea to play this with the thumpick as you have chosen to do with your arrangement. The two guitars were originally recorded fingerstyle in my opinion, one a Dobro and the other a regular flat-top Martin. Using the thumpick kind've adds the spikiness and brightness that you get from the Dobro...I think to play this tune on one guitar, the thumbpick helps alot-it also helps the natural harmonics jump out a little more. Nice work!
@flyingninja92 Actually, Duane Allman tuned to open D and fretted on the second fret. In essence giving it an open E voicing. I suppose you could play this tuned to open E, but the fingering would be painful. LOL
@70x719946 I actually find it significantly easier to play in actual open E...the tauter strings makes the fast bits easier. The only problem is, back when I used to tune it up there, I broke guitar strings. So I resort to the capo, which obviously, like you said is the same thing. If only guitar strings were more malleable....
@samnninty I think it does. The right tuning will give the right finger positions which in turn effect the string lengths when fretted. Which can alter the pitch. So it's important.
Gorgeous playing. Have seen several other YTs but they're all playedin the Leo Kottke style (which is fabulous, don't get me wrong)...nice to see a vid of a rendition more resembling the original. Bravo.
Its sort of like this, I'm trying to figure out how to play it, and he is saying here's the chords heres the pattern, just nail the bare chords... ERR!!! Very well done.
Superb rendition. This was the ONLY song that Duane Alman ever wrote. It took three years for that genious to complete. This renditon is Duane's not Leo's in Open E tuning. Terrific!
EXCELLANT man, amazing, such a simple song to the ears, but dam try playing it. i'm a drummer in all rights, but i love the guitar.thnx man for that simple song, you make it sound just like duane did!!!!
I saw a video once upon a time celebrating Duane's life with this song playing in the background and it's ever since been memorialized as "his" song in my head. Beautiful playing, beautiful song, beautiful memories.. thanks a lot!
Nice, and obviously an accomplished guitar/banjo player. I would say however, to those who want to play Little Martha as it was played by Duane Allman and Dicky Betts, not to use this video as a template. Yeah; he's gone to the bass/alternate picking style with his thumb and looks as if he rearranged things around that. It's a great rearrangement. Then again, Kottke's played some of his stuff so differently through the years, maybe this guy picked up on something Kottke once did.
great interpretation, great technique. I love the alternating thumb/bass part emphasising 2 and 4, and also the embellishments to the melody, all of which makes it sound like you are covering both guitar parts at once! have you studied classical guitar? I thought I played this song well but now I have to study your version, many thanks, and post some more stuff!
That song apparantly came to Duane Allman in a dream. He dreamt he was with Jimi Hendrix and Jimi played him that song. When he woke up, he tuned he guitar to open D (I know it's in open E) and learnt it.
