It does give the audience time to see the whole blade and get an idea of size, so I guess it does add to their understanding of what's going on.

No, that could simply be from the pointiness of the tip. Pointiness does not equal sharp on both sides.

The dagger is an un-altered Sykes Fairbairn commando knife and is as sharp as the day it was first ground.

Usually the longer blades I use are not particularly sharp because most people's reaction to seeing a 70cm sword disappear down my throat is not "Yeah, not bad - but how sharp is it?"

A sharp tip is much harder to deal with than sharp edges by the way - causes the blade to snag.

Snagging is not cool.
