  • Superb

  • I met Buck at the Negro Leagues Museum in 2005. I asked if he would mind having his photo taken with me and he said, "Let's do it! Get that camera out!" He was a great man representing the greatest game.

  • And said "Are they treating you okay."

  • I will never forget the day I met Mr O'Neil in 2006 just months before he passed. He was at the Omni having lunch across from Petco Stadium having lunch with Jackie Robinson's daughter. He greeted me with a hug like he'd known me for years, and said "

  • I will never forget the dy

  • I love this man, wish he'd lived to be 200 :) And this is my favorite version of the song in the whole Baseball series. LOVE LOVE LOVE him.

  • Not much of a singer? I think you did just fine, Mr. O'Neil.

  • Don't sell yourself short, Mr. O. You're a heckuva singer! Rest well, sir.

  • @joeypolanski I was just going to make that comment. He's not bad at all.

  • @mjacton HE LIVED TO BE NEARLY 100 AND IT WASNT LONG ENOUGH TO GET INTO THE HALL OF FAME- SHAME ON THEM

  • I remember meeting Buck to get his autograph on an old picture of him that I had printed off the net.. He smiled at me and reached his hand out to shake mine. I felt tears coming..Here I was a 35 yr old woman, crying like a baby over being able to hold this Man, this LEGENDS hand. He leaned back, looked at my face, then started hugging me and said..."What are you cryin for?"

So much I wanted to say to this awesome man. I miss him.

  • Still my favorite segment of the "Baseball" documentary. It was almost as if, in the twinkling of an eye, that he was a young man once again. Wished I could have had the opportunity to sit and talk with this remarkable man. I hope Cooperstown gives him his due with a plaque in the Hall of Fame.

  • Thanks for making Ken Burns Baseball documentary go from good to great, Buck. I could have listened to him tell stories about the Negro Leagues and Satchel Paige for hours.

  • @marvelbeatsdc Yup him telling stories how Satchel Paige would walk 3 batters just so he can bitch to Josh Gibson. Its to bad he wasnt alive now,id love to hear all the stories about the Negro Leagues.

  • Take me out to the ball game, take me out with the crowd, buy me some peanuts and cracke rjacks, I don't care if I never get back, let me root, root-root for the home team, if they don't win it's a shame, cause it's one, two, three strikes you're out, in the old ball game.

  • One of the best ambassadors of the game that baseball has ever had.

  • Extraordinary man, a man of great quality. They shut down Kansas City when he died. Greatly missed.

  • :) He's my favorite negro league player. What a wonderful man. I'm reading a book about him right now and it's lovely.

    May he rest in peace

  • A remarkable man! What a spirit!

  • i visited cooperstown when i was 10 and he was signing autographs somewhere i forgot where...but it was reggie jackson and him and no one was in his line!!! so i went over and started talking to him and he was so cool and nice...he signed a ball for me and talked to me for about 20 minutes...a really great guy

  • He was supposed to make an appearence at the 2006 all star fan fest. he passed away and i, along with America was heart broken. Buck seemed to be a great man. Anyone that knew him was truly blessed

  • One of my biggest regrets was not to meet him. Will regret it forever. He is missed so much. Never saw him without a smile. And how he delt with not being put in the hall of fame, total class!

  • I had the pleasure of meeting him in Cooperstown in 1993-he was doing an autograph signing at the old newberry's next to the HOF along with a dozen or so other negro leaguers. This was about a year before the Ken Burns epic so nobody really knew who he was. I spent the better part of an hour talking with him and them and he personalized a ball to me which I treasure. The HOF should be utterly ashamed that he was not elected.

  • Buck O'neill is legendary. Best thing the Kansas City Royals ever did was make the buck tribute seat.

  • Hooray for good old Buck O'Neil, God bless him!

  • Mr. Kansas City.

Meeting him was one of the greatest thrills of my life.

  • Oh, if only I could be half the man that Buck was. Thanks for posting the wonderful video.

  • i like the cracker jack part

  • Buck was truly a saint

  • Buck O'Neil was truely a great man. I could listen to him talk about baseball for hours. I'll bet you that the old Kansas City Monarchs when they were in their prime could beat any of the MLB teams today. Thank you for posting this.

  • RIP Buck, we love ya! The comments on this page are why I don' take the kids to the Hall, but a trip to the ballpark is always in order. Go Tigers, go Brewers, go 51's!!

Thank the good Lord that the players, the steroids, the gambling, and the egos are not bigger than the game. Here's my plug: Marcus Thames 2008 MVP

  • @PiquetBT52 wow were you wrong.

  • Good Job! He sounded good yet he said he could not sing.

    DuetsDreams

  • A real gentleman and it's disgraceful that he hadn't gone up to Cooperstown years ago.

Although maybe it's a good thing considering some of the company he would have to keep.

  • They better put him in the hall of fame this year.

  • One of the best moments from the whole film. The guy had so much dignity to be so grateful for his life in Baseball despite everything.

  • That's real baseball.

  • Thanks for the post. I actually cried watching Ken Burns' baseball, at that exact moment. And that was when Buck was still alive. That man had more love for the game of baseball in his little finger than most players will ever have in their whole lives. And he was also just a great guy. May he RIP, and may we live to see the Veteran's Committee see the error of its ways.

  • JHA30 you hit it out of the park with your comment. I am still angry that MLB neglected voting it's greatest ambassador into the Hall prior to his death!

  • JHA 30 you are correct ... MLB should be ashamed.

  • I've lived in KC my whole life, and I met Buck O'neil numerous times. And I say with a heavy heart, that the world is a much sadder place without Mr. John "Buck" O'neil

  • Buck will alway be in my hall of fame.

  • An absolute legend of the game. A tireless ambassador.

MLB should be ashamed of themselves for not electing him to the Hall of Fame while he was still alive.

  • JHA, You are absolutley right. It is an ungodly abomination that this man is not in the Hall of Fame. It seems that everyone in the entire baseball community knows that there is no question that he belongs in the Hall of Fame except for the voters. And the thing of it is, Buck never got upset about, he never lashed out about it, he took it in stride because he knew that he was loved. And he is greatly missed. For my money, Buck O'Neil was baseball greatest ambassador.

  • Thanks for posting this; this is my favorite part of the entire Ken Burns baseball documentary.

  • Thank you for posting.. Buck was a true baseball icon.. he will be missed

  • Thank you for posting this.

  • RIP Buck.
