I have that issue of Stereophile somewhere at home (with the D on the front) always lusted after those recorders. There was also one on an episode of CSI Miami but they treated it like an analog recorder. I would have thought that someone on the staff of the show would have known better.
Since it has rotating heads I was wondering if you have ever seen it play mangled tape or have tried regular ferric tape on it. Splices and chewed up tape are never good with spinning heads though.
WWWOOOOWWWWW!!!! i BEST VIDEO!!! I remember when I saw it in a cover of a Stereophile magazine, and never get the opportunity to watch or afford one!!! (very expensive....but I don't care!!! heheh) I still looking for a mint condition one and now I have a brief knowledge of this wonderful deck, thank you so much I really appreciated it!! wow!
@Vladislaw81 Then why even use the tape, its not space efficient is it? Just use the DAC on the recorder to play 24bit files on a media centre or something like that, easier editing, easier recording, MUCH less maintenance.
@DarsoMAN: You have a fundamental misunderstanding of duplication of audio if you believe that to be correct. My comment was sarcasm, Undoubtedly Nagra converters are great, the medium is incidental in digital audio. There was never any point in building something so complex as a digital tape recorder. AAD or ADD are the best ways of tracking audio, IMHO. Who wants to listen to converters (which sound like nothing at all)? I'd rather hear the excitement of analog tape, which is a new performanc
@dvamateur It's not a flood; it's choice. People prefer Casio watches because they are practical. I mean not to be technical, but there are different products for different tastes. Not enough people had the taste for tape (and much less digital audio tape) for the last two decades.
@nighthoodie Don't be fooled by the fact that the digital audio is recorded on a tape. Those recording on tape are encoded in a digital format, meaning that it has the same so-called "warmth" as an audio CD. :(
Great looking piece of technology (and much, much more than a quantum leap beyond the 1947 Brush BK-401 that can be seen in action from my YouTube page).
Very, very nice machine. I remember reading the review of this machine in Stereophile in the 90's. I was simply stunned by the performance figures. Thanks for the demo.
Incredible machine the Nagra D. Pope Music used them to great effect. Stereophile Class A recommended component for Recording devices. The Helical scan on 1/4 tape is ingenious. I want a Nagra before I die. Incredible, no one does it better. thanks for the posting this video.

Digital reel to reels R 4 losers!
You can get the same results using a non tape recorder!
Reel to reel is wasted on digital and should be used for analogue audio only!

@monty78pig No. Nagra converters are among the best.

@monty78pig But it can be edited/spliced like analog. Try doing that with any other digital format.

Another Nagra masterpiece of mechanical and electronic design and build. Exquisite is a word that applies to Nagra products.

Awsome tape deck, and very interesting video. Though what type of Tape did it use to record 24-bit? Ferric or High Bias Metal grade tape stock?

I envy you so much for getting your hands on that.

The sad part is that we're already being flooded by Chinese made flash recorders... It's kind of like Rolex watches being replaced by Casio.

Ah... the warmth of digital tape, and look, it's the quadraphonic version, quite rare :P
