@tocarress you may be completely right. I figure it was because Mello simply wanted to defeat Near's organization, or cripple them as the case may be. But Near didn't know about the notebook at this point IIRC. I don't remember how Mello found out, because Light erased L's "will" in the anime prior to the Mello/Near arc.

Haven't seen this movie yet, but I'm willing to bet that Light told either Takada or Mikami to find a way to have one of the others kill Near. Mikami probably wrote something along the lines of "loads gun, shoots at leader and then shoots self", but Light didn't realize that you couldn't use the Death Note to influence the death of more than the intended (other than those written in the notebook). Just a guess though.
