Great gun, the problem is it's action. Short Recoil operation prevents much of a muzzle brake from being added, preventing it from being portable a low recoil. All it can do is be mounted on vehicles or such and in secure infantry settings on a tripod. Not manuverable, a disadvantage when we have started to make guns like the Kord which can be fired from the hip. If the kord was in NATO chambering, it would replace this easily.

@gustgriswold Yes, although you could argue that the M2 is the longest....all depends how you want to argue...if it's comparing the longest serving "action" (how the gun operates, Mr Browning's orginial M1917 design) the M2 wins....if you wanna argue the longest serving "model" it would be the M1911 hands down...You could also argue that the 1911 still hasn't left service, since it still is used by the US military forces (although not standard issue).

In this aspect, Colt 1911A1 used today are real challenger, being manufactured in 1920-1945 period. Same for bolt actions, all mauser, mosin, enfield still used today are 1900-1945 weapons
