The fire department was called for a burning vehicle in front of the residence. They stepped off the truck to begin to fight the vehicle fire, the firefighter killed was shot the second he exited the truck.

They were just responding to a call for a fire, and had not received any word of there being a suspect. The firefighter was killed as soon as he got off the truck, and 2 police officers who were on scene for the fire got shot as soon as they pulled up too.

@fireraine It doesn't matter if they had a "Simple" car fire or not, PD was on scene with a standoff in the area, as stated by the video description. Scene safety is the responsibility of the FIRST responder, I'm willing to bet that the FD was not the first responding agency to make the scene.
It was a car fire call, not a man with a gun. The cops were there at the same time. The guy ambushed the firemen and shot two cops as well. Nobody dropped the ball.

To all of those commenting about him entering an unsafe scene you need to check your facts. The call for a vehicle fire in a residents driveway came in around 5:40 am. Everything appeared like it would be a routine car fire. When the Maplewood engine pulled up Ryan got off the truck to pull a line and put the fire out. He was then shot by a sniper from inside the house. At that point it became a standoff and became the type of scene a firefighter should not be in until it is secured by PD.
Yes it's a tragedy and sad but seriously... who the hell was the incompetent dumb-ass in charge of securing the scene? The police had no business letting firefighters into the perimeter until the scene was cleared. Are you kidding me? You let that house burn with the perp inside before you send hapless emergency workers in to get shot to death. PD responded to a home burglary two suspects came out, one was holding a gun to the head of the other suspect PD shot and killed the guy holding the gun the other suspect ran back into the house where another suspect was hiding and lit the house on fire. FD staged a few houses away behind cover and put a ladder up in the air and sprayed the house, they let it burn down the bodies were recovered later.

They did everything they could to secure the scene but the firefighters were already there Ryan had barely made it off the truck they didn't know that they were heading into and ambush the gunshots didn't start until the fire fighters were on scene.

It sucks that things like this have to happen. It is so important that as EMS personnel we wait until we know that the scene is safe. I am not sure whether this man could've avoided being shot, but I know that if I go on a call like this, I am at least 1/4 mile away from the scene until I am cleared by Law Enforcement. So sad that this has to happen to people that just want to help.

@fireraine It doesn't matter if they had a "Simple" car fire or not, PD was on scene with a standoff in the area, as stated by the video description. Scene safety is the responsibility of the FIRST responder, I'm willing to bet that the FD was not the first responding agency to make the scene.

To all of those commenting about him entering an unsafe scene you need to check your facts. The call for a vehicle fire in a residents driveway came in around 5:40 am. Everything appeared like it would be a routine car fire. When the Maplewood engine pulled up Ryan got off the truck to pull a line and put the fire out. He was then shot by a sniper from inside the house. At that point it became a standoff and became the type of scene a firefighter should not be in until it is secured by PD.

The police had no business letting firefighters into the perimeter until the scene was cleared. Are you kidding me? PD responded to a home burglary two suspects came out, one was holding a gun to the head of the other suspect PD shot and killed the guy holding the gun the other suspect ran back into the house where another suspect was hiding and lit the house on fire. FD staged a few houses away behind cover and put a ladder up in the air and sprayed the house, they let it burn down the bodies were recovered later.

They did everything they could to secure the scene but the firefighters were already there Ryan had barely made it off the truck they didn't know that they were heading into and ambush the gunshots didn't start until the fire fighters were on scene.

It sucks that things like this have to happen. It is so important that as EMS personnel we wait until we know that the scene is safe. I am not sure whether this man could've avoided being shot, but I know that if I go on a call like this, I am at least 1/4 mile away from the scene until I am cleared by Law Enforcement. So sad that this has to happen to people that just want to help.
