  • Maybe you should try a hybrid, ie. silicon as the first transistor and germanium as tyhe second. There are some positive things being said about it over the internet. The first transistor is merely a booster anyway, and it's the second that does the actual distortion. I have an old but working XB103 'top hat' (General electric UK) germanium from the early 60's that came from an old radio kit my uncle made years ago, which I'll use when get round to it.

  • is that a maxon ad-80 in the background?

  • did I hear a pop coming out when you engaged the Byoc Germanium fuzz?

  • Nice video. They all sound very close when ran wide open. The difference here seems to be in the cleanup with the guitar's volume knob. This is my take with the volume down: The Arbiter was a tad darker than the rest. The silicon was brighter/thinner than the rest. The Sunface, London and BYOC sounded almost identical, with a great mix of cut, thickness and articulation. I prefer the Sunface, but was surprised by the BYOC. It sounds fantastic. Too bad Sunface white dots are no more!

  • I like the London the best.

  • sometimes I believe everything sounds the same on YT. I recorded a video in which a fuzz face sounds almost the same as an overdrive pedal. Of course they sound very different outside youtube, but YT has got this tendency to compress everything too much, maybe...

  • Thanks for the shootout !

  • First of all, kudos for dialing in these Fuzzies like they are supposed to sound; rich, complex, and woolly with great cleanup as the volume knob is rolled back! Too many other Fuzz demos sound like someone put a pickup on a dental drill; all fizz and no body. :-S

To me, the D.A. refurb. and the BYOC are my favs, but they are all quite nice. Great playing, too!

  • type in g.s.wyllie and check his sites out-he hand builds pedals that are far better than any i`ve ever heard-(he even worked at electric ladyland!) how many of your yuppie pedal builders can say that? most were just being born-lol

  • Good video!

Is the sunface a standard nkt274 or high gain, or red dot?

  • the london sounded closer to the dallas arbiter, the analogman had more grit and attack.

  • Sunface

  • analogman sounds better for rhythm, the london or dallas arbiter sound better for rhythm. go figure.

  • They all sound kinda simliar apart from the Dallas being more wooley.

The thing that surpsrised me was that the BYOC sounded as good as the boutique jobs..... nice one.

  • diablo 76 have you tried these pedals using a humbucker-equipped guitar? how do the london and sunface compare??

  • The Silicon is the best tone for me.

  • Those all sound excellent! Good move on making this video, brings some of the true Fuzz Face tonalities to the people looking for them.

  • @THACONCH ALSO, which sort of Analogman Sun Face are you using? I know you have the NKT275 Germanium transistors onboard, but are they Red Dot originals or White Dot or High Gain? I plan on getting one soon and I would like to nail that level of distortion.

  • dallas arbiter and the london if only keep 2...

  • The NKT is hard to beat !!!

  • I liked them all. Do you know how a Zvex fuzz factory would compare?

  • Sorry! wasn't paying attention, and somehow clicked 1 star rating.. great vid. Don't know how to undo that..

  • BYOC seems to sound alot like that Dallas ... nice vid ... thanks!

  • where did you get the casing for the fuzz face shape.

  • It's sili-CON, not sili-CONE. Silicone is for fake boobs and bathtub caulk. Silicon is for semiconductors.

  • I know it's Silicon - but my Texan "draw" brings out the "E" ..... :P

  • It makes me wonder... if they could make a great sounding fuzzbox out of fake boobs, well, I'd be first in line to order one! ;-)

  • @diablo76

Nice try. Cmon now, admit it. You goofed.

Dig the playing though. Don't need to hear a whole lot to tell if someone can play.

  • @jspartacus Most people pronounce it like that. They know the difference.

  • So little difference - 95% the same tone - I think if you`re lucky enough to have one of these then that's probably fine! a mental case of GAS, but I understand ;)

  • Actually - the tonal differences are much more apparent in person. It's really hard to get all the nuances on a small digi-cam with a condenser mic. IMHO - The Blue Arbiter Refurbish is the best Fuzz Face I've heard to date....

  • @diablo76 I build one. Let me know what you think.

    Orbit Mk1

    thanks

  • NIce video, I tried an analog man sunface - sounded muddy to me. Silicon almost sounded the best - yours was excellent as well. Thanks

  • The Silicon is my production pedal.... :)

  • What a great shoot out vid. Wish more demos were like that.

  • BYOC

  • I'd say london and silicone are my 2 favorites. I actually liked the silicone a bit better. The BYOC was close behind though.

  • cool shootout! i like this :-)

  • THEY ACTUALLY ALL SOUND GOOD

  • im liking the dallas and the london.

  • Cool vid and nice pedals . What kind of kind of germ tranies are in the london? I just settled on the nkt275 sunface and a fulltone 70. I have a vid up of the new hendrix fuzz thur a cranked marshall super 100jh(it is on the second song in the vid). I like the nkt sunface the best.

  • what silicone transistors are you using

  • repeating the question. which Si trannies have u used?

  • BYOC for me!

  • Great Job!

What kind of Guitar are you using?

  • Thanks for making this vid. I like your silicon one as much as any of the others.

  • Nice test... nice gear - they all sound usable!

For chord work (with gain settings you used) hardly a difference btwn any of them...

    For solo I would say

Dallas - Nice, Darker, a little less focused

Analog - well rounded more detail and focus

    London -Slight mid emphasis (color)detailed

Deviltone - MOST Presence out of group

BYOC - sounds like the Deviltone with less presence

I was considering London Fuzz, but I am leaning toward the Analog

    nice Job

  • the london seems to the one that doesn't clean up as much when the volume was rolled back.

I like the sunface and the dallas arbiter for the soloing.

  • Great demo!

I felt the Fuzz Face and the London sounded the best. I was surprised to actually hear he higher treble response from the silicone. I use si Fuzz Faces and I never heard that till your demo. BTW, where did you find the "Top Hat" knobs for your blue Fuzz Face? Thanks and take care.

  • see you've got a full drive 2 mosfet over there. i really want to get it. if you get a chance, can you demo it?

  • whcih has a fatter and warmer sound for solos ?

  • in my opinion the Blue Arbiter* over there

    * or however you spell it

  • can you please tell me where i can get the dallas arbiter fuzz face you have here? of modded where the mods where done ? thank you for your time . to me the arbiter sounded the best .

  • Nice comparison. They all sound great, each has its own personality.

BTW, it's "silicon" - not "silicone".

  • 2:21 u mak'n sing, ~nIce~

  • Very interesting, thanks for this vid =)

  • Hey what model of byoc is that? is it the vintage or the tonebender?

  • it's an older BYOC Fuzz Face board - the parts are just some things I had around.

  • Any detail on the transistors? Type? Gain?

Your BYOC and the Dallas sound really good...

I dont really care for Si but your prototype sounded pretty good too.

  • killer job Thanx

  • Nice demo. Pretty much convinced me to go with the BYOC. :)

  • Good demo - all of the pedals sound great! I think my favourite is the refurb. Sunface sounds too polite...London is cool as well...

  • It sounds like you're on one pu throughout your 'shootout'...is limiting our guitar tones a good thing? Then what good's a shootout w/1 only 1 pu demoed? Or did I miss something? Thanks anyway-

  • I used both the neck and the bridge pickups.

  • can i know what is your strat Volume and tone setting when you using the fuzz pedal??

  • Guitar tones were on "10" and the volume was on "7" for the "cleaner" sounds and then wide open for full fuzz.

  • Thanks for the demo, Diablo. It's like you're reading my mind! I totally wanted the low down on cool fuzz boxes!

  • dude..they all sound good.. i like the fuzzface and the sunface the most

  • Great job as usual but really tough choice. I think I like the Fuzz Face the best.
